Apart from the beyond stupid obsession with buying French that has led to billions and billions wasted on subs, helos, torpedoes, ERP which has never been explained The real problem is the insistence on building here which just adds tens of billions and decades to the schedule. We should bought the latest ASTUTE SSN or the latest Japanese SS straight from their production lines unmodified and done maintenance here. Same as the Hunter class should be scrapped completed and replaced by in build ships.from the US or Japan.

Or we could stop sleeping with the lights on and not bother at all.

Except there is a monster in the dark this time - not the wonderful Chinese people but the aggressive dictator oppressing them whom just keeps increasing his unprovoked aggression against his peaceful neighbours. He won't invade us just our friends and demand a subservient attitude under threats in particular more of his illegal trade war tactics if we say publically he is less than perfect

China can barely get Hong Kong under control. It has taken 30 years - is still going - and started with a controlled handover.

China invading Australia is a conservative myth dreamed up to startle the horses (sheep).

The USA and China are in a global competition - mostly economic - and frankly they can have it - there is nothing in it for Australia. If the USA prevails we will deal with that, if China prevails Australia will have to deal with that.

But at no point is Australia at risk. Australia is all but owned by the USA. No one is coming near us.

They don't need to invade Australia to cause complete destruction.

The "long peace" was about 100 years between the Napoleonic Wars and WW1. The lesson from both pre-World War I and pre-World War II tensions is that periods of relative peace are not guarantees of continued stability, especially when powerful nations pursue divergent ambitions.

There's more than a few similarities between the outbreak of WWII and current global politics also.

Defence spending needs to ramp up not down, people who say otherwise are basing it on unfounded optimism.

They don't need to invade Australia to destroy the country.

There was generally about 100 years of peace prior to WW1 and there's more than a few similarities to the build up to WW2 at the moment.
They cannot do anything without Australia. They cannot destroy Australia without destroying themselves.

This country needs to grow up.

And Australia can't do anything without them economically.

I think I know which of the two would buckle first.

Which is why, if sensible, we put resources into having more of our essential supply chains controlled here than defending trade routes.

I see another fuel processing plant will shut down early 2025. We are crazy fools

I agree.

Sovereign manufacturing and processing is the way forward.

The problem with this is, it will put cost of living inflation into hyperdrive.

The gas industry should be nationalised imo, as it is in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Russia, Norway and Venezuela.

Australia is by far the largest world gas supplier who's government/state don't control their own gas resources and determine how it is sold, at what price, how it is processed etc.

It is owned by America. Good luck with that.

Yeah, and no doubt it would cost in the 100's of billions to nationalise. From a legal perspective, we can do what we want in our nations interest, as long as it's done in a fair and reasonable manner.

But the investment would worth it and repaid relatively quickly.

Our yields from our gas reserves are bordering on criminal compared to places like Qatar.

Just tax it properly. Labor already tried that - first it got watered down to irrelevance and then Abbott got in and it got abolished - these guys represent us apparently
