Maybe it's just my perception, but it seems like Aussie boxing is on the way up at the moment. The recent purchase of Foxtel by DAZN certainly opens the door for a lot more boxing to take place in Australia/with Australians overseas and that's exciting for the sport. We currently have genuine world champions in Jai Opetaia, Skye Nicolson, Cherneka Johnson and Che Kenneally as well as recent world champions like Tim Tszyu, George Kambosos and Liam Paro who are still in the mix for title shots.
Matchroom/Eddie Hearn seem determined to raise the profile of boxing in this country by signing exciting young talent and giving them the platform like Huni, Teremoana etc. Eddie Hearn has talked about doing at least four big boxing cards in Australia this year after the success of their first sold out event on the Gold Coast two weeks ago and said in an ideal world they'd be coming to Australia to do big events 8-12 times a year. Here is a video from two weeks ago of Eddie Hearn talking about wanting to do more big boxing cards in Australia around the 2:00 mark:
I believe Matchroom are about to commit to another event in Sydney this coming March that will feature Kambosos' debut in the 140lb division as well as Nicolson defending her world title on home soil for the first time. No Limit also have some exciting cards on the horizon which was supposed to start with Goodman getting a world title shot against Inoue this weekend before he had to pull out. However, No Limit do currently have the Liam Wilson fight in early March and that's going to be held in Brisbane so fingers crossed that one goes ahead. I imagine they'll be looking to have Tim Tszyu fight in Australia at some point this year as well.
I'll also point out that the Gold Coast Council seem really determined to become a boxing city at the moment with the amount of winning bids they've placed to host world title fights involving Opetaia and Tszyu in the last few years and I think you really need that kind of government support for this to work properly and I can see it taking off even more when they build the new 18k Gold Coast Indoor Arena over the next few years in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics. Ideally, the Gold Coast would become the Las Vegas of Australia in terms of hosting world class boxing events.
So this thread is intended to be dedicated to all things Aussie boxing, from world champions like Jai Opetaia all the way to boxers that have recently started and have shown promise like Jazzy Parr. Feel free to share anything related to Australian boxing in this thread, no matter how big or small it may be.
