Are you aware that the junior world no.1 female player is Australian and at 16 has been called the next Ash Barty? Maya Joint is also an exceptional talent at 18. To say we have "stuff all talent coming through in the women's ranks" is just untrue.

Just Be VERY careful looking at juniors. Tomic was this great white hope junior no1 too. A lot of these female junior no1’s have done very little lately, probably the only one that may realise her potential is Andreeva, Coco might have forget if she was no1 in juniors though (not really a fan of hers so I forget). There’s been some weird junior world no1’s lol. There are some young girls coming but I have zero expectations as frankly the development is horrific, the lack of funding is a huge problem whereas in Europe and US they have big academies eg. Bolleteri academy in Florida is one (one taht a few have come from incl Sharapova). The test will be how to nurture the talent, weirdly their best hope is to not use the Australian system but go to Europe develop their game over there in a European tennis academy or in the States
Yeah why not send our best junior tennis players to the US or Europe to develop. ADM played junior tennis in Spain before he moved back to Australia. Rafa Academy have juniors from all over the world playing and training send some Aussies to his academy.

Emerson Jones is very talented too and she grew up in Australia. Her and Joint are very likely the future of women's tennis in Australia. They've spent plenty of time training together when Joint moved to Brisbane a few years back.
Fair enough. I take solace in the fact that Jones is ranked inside the top 400 and has a pro title to her name already at the age of 16. Jones and her brother (Hayden) may be an example of how things are changing in Australia with the KDV tennis academy on the Gold Coast. My understanding is that it's supposed to be our version of the Bolleteri academy and will (hopefully) produce lots of pro players. The Hewitts specifically moved to the GC a few years ago for that reason to have Cruz train at KDV and he looks like he's on his way as well.
Tennis Australia has tried the Europe route before. They had academies set up in Spain and the UK around 10-15 years ago and would house young Aussie tennis players while they playing tournaments over there. It never really eventuated in the way they wanted it to. One thing you'll often see with Aussie tennis players is how much of a toll it takes on them to be away from home for long periods of time. Barty and Kyrgios were outspoken about it in years goneby and mentioned how homesick they got while on the road and they were two of our most successful players. Imagine the grind if you were losing in the first or second round most weeks.
I think they developmental system is decent in Australia at the moment with the national academy model in each capital city. Add in a few more KDVs and I think you'll see a lot more potential will be realised in Australian tennis. It would help if we had a specific place that was known for tennis academies like Florida in the US. Maybe that's what we'll see in the future with Queensland providing a similar climate to Florida.

Turned it off after the first set I’ve followed Potopova enough to know the script.
Unreal effort so far this week. She'll enter the top 100 and secure a career high ranking with that win. She faces another unseeded opponent in the quarterfinals so this run could extend into the weekend if Kim can keep it up. So good to see a Queenslander doing well in Brisbane and of course an Australian playing well in Australia. I noticed Sam Stosur sitting in Birrell's box during the match and I know they are close as they come from the same local club on the Gold Coast. Great to see Stosur helping guide our younger players to big results.

No doubt. They've known each other for a long time because Sam would always come back to the Gold Coast in the off season and hit with Kim at Queens Park. That was happening before Kim turned pro so we're going back more than a decade. So perhaps an older sister type vibe.
