Do they, not according to the Guardian who polled in 2017, personally the Polls seems to have moved the other way since?

Unless you consider 54% an overwhelming majority.

Asked about whether the date of Australia Day should change, 54% of Indigenous Australians polled were in favour of a change compared with a total of 15% of total Australians polled.
I'm sure the Guardian poll would be balanced.

And THIS is it.

I'm happy to have it changed, but the date needs to be of some significance rather than a random day.
Why?

We want to celebrate our nation. THAT'S what makes it significant. You're not celebrating the past, you're celebrating the present and future.

That being said ... Most countries celebrate the date they became independent, not the date they became colonised.

The percentage of Australians that want it changed has doubled since that time.

I don't know the level it's increased for indigenous people.

Yeah, well when that happens in Australia so be it, until then...

We literally started this off with someone trying to get the sanfl to sack someone for laughing at a club post.
Isn’t that very similar to wanting the club to tell people how to think?
No... it's the exact reverse. It's someone trying to tell the club how to think, not the club telling the supporters.

Easter’s date is never a set date.
So why does Australia Day need to be?

I mean, presumably Jesus had an actual date when he did his business, but we don't need to celebrate that. We celebrate the idea.

It's kind of obvious what I'm suggesting. We don't have to celebrate some past event. We just need to take time to stop and celebrate our country.

If/when we become a republic, then we can change the date to that day.

For now though, Australia became an independent nation on 1st January 1901 - and we already have a public holiday for New Years Day.

Each of the states & territories has a day celebrating their founding. 26th January 1788 is the day that the Colony of New South Wales was founded, which subsequently became the country of Australia. It is the day which the colony which led directly to Australia was founded. In lieu of a Republic Day, or New Years Day, it is the most appropriate day to celebrate our great country.

We don't know the exact date of Jesus' birth, though it's thought to have been sometime in October. December 25th is the result of early Christians co-opting a pre-existing pagan festival.

Jesus death happened at the time of Passover, as recorded in the Bible. In 2025, Passover runs from 12-20 April. Easter is from 18-21 April. Passover & Easter are both defined in terms of the lunar calendar, and are strongly aligned, so the dates on this one are pretty close to right.

I’ve already explained earlier in a reply to bunjimac
