4 years until the next world cup. We are on the hunt big time for cricketers to fill the test side. This should come into consideration when selecting the ODI squad. I'd be inclined to pick a squad something along the lines of this. Voges, Clarke, Bailey, Doherty, Haddin, Johnson and Watson more than likely aren't going to be around for the next ICC World Cup or Ashes series and playing them doesn't really help us find up and coming international cricketers.

Warner
Nevill
Smith
Maxwell
Stoinis
Lynn
Khawaja
S Marsh
M Marsh
Ferguson
Agar
Zampa
Pattinson
Cummings
Sandhu
Handscomb
Starc
Hazelwood
Byrnes
Abbott
Faulkner
Finch

Obviously this needs trimming but these players should all be playing at least some international cricket in the next coming years.

All those bowlers and no love for the Dorfmeister or NCN? Oh well, WA can use them.

I think picking Nevill to keep would be the logical thing if only to try and help him with the transition.
Given that he sucks in the OD format means it's illogical.

Would Nevill even be in NSW's first ODD XI as of last season?

Watson
Warner
Smith
Clarke
Maddinson
Henriques
Haddin (+)
Starc
Sandhu
Lyon
Hazlewood

Even this season you'd have Carters instead of Clarke and Nevill only gets in because Haddin retired. Wade is clearly a much better choice.

Bailey deserges a chance this series to see if he can play the Voges role in the OD side. Going to be full of youth an inconsistency we could use someone who already averages 40+.

He was in poor form coming into the world cup but he scored 50 in his last ODI innings before Clarke came back and seems in good touch at the moment.

Nowhere near the bowler that Faulkner is.

Totally agree, but I can see the selectors plonking M.Marsh / Stoinis into that role despite neither of them being anywhere near Faulkner as an ODI bowler.

Since T20 cricket has come along the selectors have taken a deliberate path towards strengthening the batting line-up with having genuine batsman / legitimate allrounders batting down to 8 or even 9 in the order. They seem quite happy to compromise an extra 10 - 20 runs conceded in the bowling lineup if it adds strength to the batting which gives further license to the top order to attack from the start.

Given that this strategy won the 2015 WC, I can anticipate the selectors will continue developing the side & squad along this path of thinking for the 2019 WC in England. Essentially, planning for that tournament starts now which is why the squad is probably going to have Warner as the most experienced player in it (assuming Watson isn't picked - which would be a gutsy, but probably correct call).

Is Stoinis even in the A squad for the one dayers?

I get that Faulkner's out but wouldn't they just use that to bring in Mitch Marsh or Cummins?

Wouldn't Watson play that role in the ODI side?

Would prefer M. Marsh played to give him more international exposure, especially given they've royally stuffed him around on this tour. He's been more effective in ODI cricket so far anyway. The only reason for playing Watson (only relevant in the summer ODIs) would be if they want Marsh to play Shield cricket later in the year.

From the World Cup team I guess Clarke out and Marsh in.

The same could have been said for the NSW FC team....

I've heard it on good authority that Marcus Stoinis will be appearing in the ODI squad for the England series. Deserved call up and with a strong eye for fresh blood.

On the money - squad announced. Khawaja stiff to miss, but Bailey has been retained which I didn't pick earlier. Watson still there as well and Finch isn't fit yet. Thought they might have squeezed one more into the squad, but maybe Boyce will be retained after the T20 game if he bowls ok.
