It was actually a great experience. Inside the ropes at times and always up super close. Morning was very quiet crowd wise but the golf was still great. Chatted briefly to a couple of players and caddies, commented on some shots, got replies. I was on #10 which is our #1 and seeing elite ball strikers attack it was a thrill.
Pin position was brutal on first 2 days and average must’ve been above par.
Would do it again.

Ps. There’s an app where you can register as a volunteer and apply to do tournaments here and around the world. How good would that be?
aye. V-ing is great fun and rewarding having done it a few times.

Congrats to young Riggs, well played, but….imo, shows how far the Aus Open has declined that the 953rd ranked player in the world wins it.
Move it to March, a week before LIV Adelaide, and we might have a chance of getting some decent fields.
Otherwise it’s going to die a slow death.

LIV Adelaide is middle of Feb next year.

LIV have a tournament the week before in Riyadh.

If you had the Oz Open the week after you would be able to get a few of the LIV field playing as their next tournament is not until the 2nd week of March.

The Oz Open for men and women definitely needs to go back to stand alone events.

Hindsight is easy, but the Aussie Tour completely screwed itself by not jumping fully into bed with the Euro Tour - like South Africa did. That basket case of a country beat us to the punch and now they have 4 DP Tour stops.

We can't move to March without co-operation/sanctioning from the DP World Tour. Without that, a March field would be terrible and we'd probably lose the Open qualifying spots - LIV players can't fill an open tournament on their own and the rest of the field would be horrendous.

Just like for LIV players, the OWGR ranking is pretty meaningless for a recent college grad. Ryggs looks like a player!

you aren't getting a decent field with a $1.7m purse. The winner of a stock standard PGA event basically gets the entire AUS Open purse lol

problem is we are on the other side of the world, so unless there is a monster purse OR we are paying appearance fees than unfortunately we will always struggle to get the big names out here. We should be trying to do what the ZOZO does for Japan in partnership with the PGA.

Moving it to LIV will get bigger names here but i dont think we want our national tournament as a feeder to LIV. Thats just papering over cracks There are better ways to do it IMO.

TBH i dont mind watching the lesser names go around. Problem is the TV coverage is utterly woeful. Rounds 1-3 was just a complete wankfest for Cam Smith. Than the final Round for Lucas Herbert.

Golf in Australia as a professional tour spectacle has been struggling for a very long time. I’m not sure what the answer is but when commercial FTA dumped it all those years ago there were concerns of the tour folding completely. Would it be nice if the structure was better, yes but if it means a tour exists I’ll accept the current format.

Golf Australia is in a terrible spot with regard to this event. It's close to a mutiny now amongst the players and there can surely be no way this dual format survives another year.

However it's difficult to see where they get the sponsorship to be able to run two separate events going forward. As my mate said I wouldn't want to be relying on the Vic Government in the short term to open the wallet given the impending budget black hole.
