Current form and surface matter so much more then ranking.
Ranking points are accumulated for a whole calendar year and on all surfaces, which means there are some players that may be ranked as high as in the top 30 but have lost their last 10 matches etc.

nadal on clay = 1.15
the rankings make no real difference. would you take nadal on clay or roddick on clay ? only a few rankings apart.

True, but those two players are not only closely ranked, but have had similar success against similarly ranked players over the past few months, which is probably the most important factor.
Usually I will bet on the very top players (top 15) when they play against opponents who are ranked 50+ spots behind them - and haven't had wins against any top players recently. They pay lower odds, but at least you get the win. Then I look at high ranked player and make sure they haven't slipped up against lowly ranked players. Case in point is Federer!
Anyway it works for me, so it's all good.

I wouldn't take Nadal 1.15 versus Roddick or Federer - not when I could take Nadal v (player ranked 70) 1.08 twice, on any surface!

Stuff it, can't see Williams losing, her opponent has only won 2 games out of her 11 played this year, and hasn't played much on Clay Court either. Williams should win easily.
And St.Kilda play a lock down brand of Football, 99.9% sure that neither team will win by over 60 points here.
