Bad News for Aussie Jones and Footy in Bendigo?

it just seems strange that a city the size of Bendigo cant run a decent team in the VFL.

Nth Ballarat has been very successfull in the VFL winning 3 flags in a row recently and the cities are about the same size and n both have good local comps to draw players from.

Yes but Nth Ballarat is/was its own club...
Bendigo has no history

But could be just as successful if people would embrace it. It's that lack of acceptance which makes it doomed.

Nth Ballarat is hardly embraced by the community either. It barely draws a crowd. When it was formed there was a lot of resentment that it wasn't a genuine Ballarat-rep team, it was one rogue club promoting itself at the expense of the league. There is continuing resentment at the close links between Nth Ballarat and Nth Ballarat City (the BFL club).

Nth Ballarat succeeds because it has great people running it, but also because it has a Sports Club with poker machines giving it a source of income. In contrast Bendigo don't even club rooms let alone an income source.

It's really enlightening reading through a lot of these comments. I'm not from the region but have gotten to know Aussie Jones and Tim Dickson pretty well in the past few months. Any club at any level would be lucky to have people of this ilk involved in there clubs. Looking at the recruiting they've done, I think they will surprise many. Hopefully the local community will embrace the enthusiastic and committed young group that want's to represent the region in the VFL.

Bottom line it's money. Dean Galea will make more money playing suburban footy for a quarter of the effort and commitment training wise. What you have to remember is these VFL players have o be able to compete with afl trained players. Players who are full one professionals. So VFL = lots of training, diet conscious, not partying etc. Who wants that of you know you can't get drafted and aren't making money?
Solution. Pay VFL players more than they could make at suburban level. Means a VFL club would need a salary cap of maybe $500,000 but if that's what it's gonna take.

Most stand alone clubs are running on the smell of an oily rag. That was the reason a lot of them were forced to go into partnerships with AFL clubs in the first place, they couldn't survive financially.

If we could afford to pay our players what they deserve, we would, we just simply don't have the resources. If the AFL really wanted to, they could pay each clubs wages for them ten times over, but they are looking for the VFA clubs to fall over so they can have a reserves comp without going to the trouble of setting one up.

What people think is the afl
Couldn't e bothered setting up a 2's comp so they hijacked the VFA to ultimately own it. This mid rubbish. They had a functioning comp. what they didn't have was grounds...;) at that stage Optus oval was still a afl ground. They didn't have options for their reserves to play on quality grounds with stands. So
They needed Coburg city oval, box hill city oval etc.

That's rubbish. Most of the old VFL grounds are perfectly serviceable, which is why Windy Hill, Victoria Park, Princess Park, Punt Road and Western Oval will be used by their respective AFL reserves sides in the VFL, in addition to Kardinia Park.

The VFA was dying, so the AFL saw an opportunity, "merged" the VSFL with it and commenced the take over.

Study your history. When they merged back in 1999, western oval was in use by the dogs. Carlton used Optus. Collingwood trained out of Vic park. Punt road wasn't game ready- it's only this year that they'll play on it after spendin money developing it- The afl needed "clean" grounds they could schedule reserves games at without upset to afl clubs. I actually know my history -

* Footscray stopped using the Western Oval in 1997 (last game Round 21 vs West Coast), so it was not in use at all past then.
* Carlton didn't play at Princess Park every week (it was really only an occasional venue anyway), so why couldn't the reserves play there on off weeks, or as curtain raisers?
* How does training impact on game day use? If it was good enough for training, surely it would be OK to be used on a weekend?
* Punt Road was most certainly "game ready", in fact the Richmond VFL side used it as a home ground for the year they were stand alone, before the Coburg "merger" in 2001.

I highly doubt the reason for the AFL to merge it's reserves with the VFL was the need for "clean" grounds, whatever that means. Even if that is the case, why are Preston playing at Princess Park, as Carlton still train there. Ditto Essendon and Windy Hill (before they moved at the end of 2013) and ditto Geelong, who still use Kardinia Park for training AND play AFL games there, even hosting a final this year!

I don't need to do my "research", I was there when all this happened. Were you?

Actually, Windy Hill is in a VERY POOR state.

Dodgy little scoreboard, no time clock and the away team have no changerooms... they actually get changed in the Cricket Club bar!

I was at the Essendon Vs Port game in 2013, and went into our "change room" afterwards, and apart from that, the other things (no time clock, no proper scoreboard) are cosmetic, and very easily fixed. The playing surface itself was in better nick than half the old VFA grounds, and it had plenty of places to sit and watch the game, unlike a few other grounds I've been *cough*Williamstrown*cough*.

Bendigo gold need to fold at seasons end. Its embarrassing for people from bendigo who are actually into footy. Even with the bendigo advertisers one sided reporting on bendigo gold they cant stop the haters.

If they received support from the local league as North Ballarat do, they would be going OK. The VFL cannot afford to lose any stand alone teams with the amount of AFL reserves sides set to grow (St Kilda split with Sandringham at the end of this year, I believe), we are in danger of being overwhelmed by stronger and more popular opposition, which will erode the power base of established former VFA clubs.

If the Bendigo Gold are to fold, then they need to be replaced by a country team that actually has the support of the community and the league.

Cursed from the start really by the sounds of it. If the local area doesn't want a VFL team, doesn't want to try and show and prove itself against the best in Victoria, clubs happy mulling around in their own regional comp and players happy in a 'small pond', then the whole Bendigo Gold project was pointless anyway.
The people have to want it, for it to work. If the people don't want it, they won't pay attention to it, so the sponsors and players won't go for it either.

Expect there'll be another attempt there in a few years once an inevitable league split happens in about 4 years time. AFL reserves is surely on the cards, or an AFL VIC reserves, or an AFL East reserves (to cover VIC, NSW and QLD). Then there'll be a proper VFL again, and they'll need a few new members.

A real shame. With a population of reasonable size like that (in Victoria) not having a representative footy side surely some other sports must have there eyes on the city.

Bendigo do have a TAC cup side don't they? If so assuming they'll use the oval?

Would you **** off with that nobody embraces bullshit.

We embraced the Diggers every year they were here and they were still a horrendous dismal failure, not to mention apart from when they have their hands out the Gold are barely sighted in Bendigo. It runs both ways. Try being here before sprouting off about things you clearly have no idea about.

I wonder if the VFL will bother to replace them with another regional team, or if they will just wait until Sandringham and St Kilda split to have an even number of teams again.
