Walsh for me although they are both going to entertain us for many years.
walsh’s workrate has to be seen live to be believed.
that’s not to say Smith doesn’t work hard because he does.

I mean I'd take Bont over Merrett easily, but he's a genuine gamebreaker. Not many like him maybe except a Danger, Dusty, Fyfe or Franklin. Cripps is clearly a rung below. You're clearly underrating Merrett though which is funny because I'm confident your mob would offer him $1.5m a year just to go there this year.

As for your comparison...lol. It reminds me when North fans tried to shoehorn LDU into the Brayshaw/Cerra discussion. Was delusional on draft night, still is now 😂

Sympkin is better than both Brayshaw and Cerra. We expect LDU to match Sympkins level by the end of the season.

Please don't be one of those Blues fans..

I think Smudger has probably a slightly higher ceiling, is more to win games off his own boot, but I also believe Walsh will be the more consistent player, not prone to have the off game or two which Smith had last season.

Horses for courses stuff really though, top end talent of that draft was unreal.
I think we have to be mature as Carlton fans to accept some fans will take Smudger over Walsh without taking it like an insult.

However what i cannot Cop is opinions from clowns like Kane Cornes who said Walsh was the wrong no 1 pick.

Walsh will be our next captain, just has leadership running through his veins.
Walsh could never be the ‘wrong’ number 1 pick. With Max King doing an ACL and carlton desperate for a kid just like Walsh, he was perfect for them and he’s been incredible since. Smith was always gonna be a gun but his ceiling wasn’t as obvious as Walsh’s. Bloody happy I have one of them. Watching Smith last night was an absolute pleasure

Do you show up to every thread just to troll? He is clearly joking.

And Zach Merrett is a star

This isn't an Essendon related thread, but an Essendon fan tried to make it so. And I know he's joking lol...no one with a brain knows Caldwell is in the same hemisphere as Smith and Walsh.

Well put. The position that Carlton were in at the time, they were picking Walsh every day of the week. Regardless of who had the higher ceiling, it was apparent that Walsh was the one who'd put in consistent high level performances week in, week out. While I'd consider Smith the bigger "match winner", it's Walsh who was going to become the core of Carlton's engine room long term. He was the perfect fit for Carlton, while Smith was the perfect fit for the Dogs, and neither club would ever consider swapping.

As much as both impress me.
I think that's what most naturals would say, if it came to a choice of the two, they would chose Smith for a trade if both wanted to go to their club via trade.
I wouldn’t pick one over the other at this stage, and probably wouldn’t for the balance of their careers if the trajectory doesn’t divide significantly.
What a lot of people don’t see is Walsh’s workrate defensively / offensively. Not saying Smith doesn’t work hard, the kid is exceptional at this stage, but Walsh is on another level.
He just gets to contest after contest. As someone pointed out earlier, you have to see him cover territory live for perspective.
Its reflected in career stats to date in Walsh’s R50s & I50s.
Smith probably looks the better offensive weapon at this point, and this will more than likely continue. I do think Walsh pips him at this point from an overall mid balance perspective.

Walsh is better overhead.

Like everything with these two, probably need to pre-text that with “at the moment” !
It‘s going to be a delight watching them both evolve.
Couldn't ask more from either at this point, and they’re still pups.
Heard Smith speak to what appeared to be a mates Dad at the airport a while back, was sitting on the floor waiting for a flight. Got up and spoke wonderfully with the fella.
Seems a lovely level headed kid.

Well that's where you don't know much about Smith, for an excersise, watch the round one game and you will find he goes defensive a lot too with spoils and tackles etc just as much as Walsh
