what a great pick up this boy has proven to be!
three games in a row now and i can't think of a serious mistake in any of them.
cool under pressure, uses the ball well, not hurried in disposal, quick enough. i just love the way he will hold off throwing the ball on the boot, prop, look for a target and then hit it!!!
can't wait to see him get abit more confidence and start mounting attacks from defence.
a great entrance to afl footy.

Yeah, he has been a great pickup- and the Hawks have lost alot of talent from this guy, they should have kept him... never should have let him go- it'll cost em one day.

Baird - Future Star

Who see's a bit of David Dench in John Baird?

I know after 3 games it's too early to put such massive wraps on a young guy, but after having met him for the first time on Sunday, I am very impressed with him not only as a Footballer, but as a person too.

He has good athleticism for a big bloke, great disposal, is cool under pressure and doesn't mind the hard stuff.

He also helps out his fellow backmen like Denchy used to do so well. He seems to know when to leave his direct opponent to help out, as well as often leading the forward to the footy to mark in front. These are all excellent traits to have so early in an AFL career.

For mine, he even moves a little bit like the great David Dench.

What do you think folks, can anyone see a similarity? Or should I speak through my mouth and give my ar_e a rest?

Go Roos!

When Mick retires I can see Jason going down to FB and Baird taking over the CHB position.

He has a lot of poise and never seems to be rushed.

He just needs to build his body up a bit more and get extra game time under his belt and he will have a great future ahead of him.

He's certainly got the experienced heads around him to teach him all the tricks of the trade.

I don't see any Dench in him at all, Dench was the most attacking FB probably of any era and I don't see any of this in Baird's game.

If he starts charging down the centre of the field bouncing the ball and going for goal then I'll agree with you :D

Denchie equals (or compares too) no-one playing AFL EVER

i have been told by a very good source that if Denchie had have been in the AFL hall of fame at the time he would have had more votes for full back than SOS.

theres probably more dench in david king than there is in baird and its too early too call.

dench could scoop the ball up in one hand tuck in under the arm and run it out of defence then would come the booming kicks something i wish kingy could do when hes kickin out;)

If my memory serves me right, i heard that the Hawks supporters weren't too pleased to see Baird go when we first drafted him, so i thought that along with the fact he was BOG in the VFL? GF is a good sign. 3 rounds in and i still see positive things from the guy. The way he has managed to perform in defence, his athleticism has impressed me too and i see great things ahead for him. Hope some of you aren't putting too much pressure on Baird by comparing him to Dench, cause Dench was named at fb in the NMFC team of the century wasn't he?
