Did anyone else see that in the eagles bulldogs game? I can't remember who the player was, but he was on the eagles goal line and dropped a mark after the umpire blew his whistle early.. so instead of changing his decision to play on.. he calls ball up!? Unbelievable... dogs would have been livid if it resulted in a goal..

I've seen a few cases of this. It's funny how umpires are able to sook about players doing 'the wrong thing' but they refuse to accept their poor calls. They just go cover them up. :thumbsu:

Expect some lame excuse, if this even makes it to the news. The AFL are good at keeping things like these on the down-low.

Hard to criticize the umpire because it's probably in the rule book but common sense must prevail this week and that rule has to be changed to the umpire can call play on. It was right on the goal line for ****sake.

The rule was changed 2 years ago that meant an umpire can call "play on" when making a marking error. Not having seen this incident I would think that common sense prevailed, as calling "play on" in such close proximity to the goal line would cause further controversy.

The level of umpiring is so low it isnt funny mainly due to umpires that dont understand the game and cant accept they make errors..This decision seems fine to me.

The rule book informs us that the umpire can cancel the decision (wrong by blowing for the mark) by calling play on.
I have never seen an AFL umpire blow the whistle to pay a mark before a mark is completed.

I lost.

Umpiring from the Eagles Vs Bulldogs game has been horrible. Glass was penalised for pushing someone in the side in a marking contest which is ok as long as it's not in the back.

Actually it's not okay. A push is a push and is not permitted. Having said that, I diodn't think it was a free kick...more a show of strength. What I can't work out is how that one was paid yet in the first quarter Lynch threw Lake out of the way before taking the mark...and that was deemed okay. I think we had the work experience umpires today. They were almost as bad as the bulldogs who were abysmal.

This is spot on.

Not sure it is. Yes Williams was close to goal but he was also miles away from any other player. A quick call of play-on would have been appropriate. Either way, the umpire concerned should be dropped. Any idea what his name was?

It is spot on. Either way, quick call of play on would not have been wrong either. The "interpretation" is if the next act of play is going to disadvantage the team, call for a bounce. I agree with you AR that he had time to get out of it.
The umpire was Craig hendrie from memory.

I thought you were referring to the statement that "common sense prevailed" as being spot on. My bad.
