Living in Pirie we got a 'front seat' view of it. Sad how much beautiful country got burned. Got within a couple hundred metres of some friends houses. I think the CFS certainly did as good a job as one could expect in such tricky terrain.

I have a photo from the 16th of January when the fire left the Flinders and rampaged down the plains. The fire actually split into two fires because no one turned of the electricity supply to the area and a spot fire broke out at the bottom of a power pole from the radiant heat and took off. That fire destroyed an old shed, one guys house and untold damage to 300- 400 year old red gums as well as Telowie george, The original fire was stopped at the back of some peoples properties before going back and across into the hills. The fire was at its most dangerous that day, equal to when the cool change hit on the friday and sent it around and over Wirrabarra. The rest of the month of burning was very sad for the tress and wildlife, but humans were never really endangered. The CFS though, did make some booboos by having no understanding of fire behavior in the spencer gulf and were very badly resourced. What was made available to them when the fire was at its worst was severely restricted because headquarters didn't want to commit anything from the adelaide region, in case it went up.

Amazing in that top photo how there seems to be a few trees, shrubs that survived that !! Great photos :thumbsu:

Where this photo was taken was in the firing line a few hours before, when the fire made the creek (left of photo you can see red gums lining it) it cut the CFS off (trapped on north side) and there was nothing in the way or any other units anywhere to stop it reaching here. However the red gums normally catch any breeze and take it into the george this is what they did with the wind the fire created. With a 20 knot northerly blowing, the fire took a 90 degree turn and went east back in the hills. What you see here is what they call a backing fire, a fire burning wherever it likes because it has fuel.

That is a full moon you can see, its fire red. The smokey area is where the main front absolulty abolished. Took telstra 3 months to come and repair the melted phone lines.

What the fire didn't wreck, the flood did.
