Where is he at?

After making inroads in 08 and early 09, he seems to have stagnated in the past 12 months.

So:

Is he the answer to our speed and run in the midfield quest?

Is he the answer to our defensive mid quest?

Or is he depth at best and at risk of losing his spot in 2011?

Personally, I think he could be a great defensive mid, much like Clint Jones. They both have fantastic pace, tenacity, toughness, can win their own footy and are great tacklers, plus by playing in a defensive role their lack of footskills are less of a liability to the side.

Thoughts?

I like Jaxson Barham and he does offer leg speed, but his kicking is well below par and that is the last thing we need IMO.

Might need a bit more meat to be an effective tagger. I'm still on Barham as part of a $1 bet with mdc, so I hope he can get more time.

If he improves his kicking by @10% he all of a sudden becomes a good option as he gets plenty of the ball.

Many reports from the VFL say that he is travelling well this season and his kicking appears to have consistently improved. According to those who've been watching him, he has consistently hit targets on his preferred foot this season, and only missed a couple on his non-preferred and under pressure.

If he could get his kicking as competent as say Ben Johnson appears to have, I reckon he'll make it (because of other attributes - supreme pace).

Very quick, great tackler, very tenacious, will get his own footy and gets his hands on the ball...

BUT

Can't hit the side of a barn door by foot and almost constantly turns the ball over with his poor decision making and disposal errors.

This is a critical flaw that MAY short circuit his potential career if he can't turn it around this year.

I'd love to see more of Barham, think he has potential. Tough to break into the side this year, but if the side needs more pace he'll get called on. I hear his kicking is much better this year so hopefully he's got that mostly sorted out.

I share your optimism about him as a footballer Spicey, I suspect you'll claim that $1.

Upon re-reading my original post, You could almost replace Barham's name with Toovey's based on the way I described him. That's because I left out the most critical element of why I think Jaxson will make it and Toovey will likely struggle - smarts.

It's an intangible quality, but without doubt Barham has them and Toovey doesn't (although he does have some other qualities).

He is still very much a depth and possible future option rather then a player who is a real threat to break into the best 22 at this stage IMO.

As the Spicey one has mentioned to tag consistantly he will need to work on some more strength to be able to tag and niggle a larger variety of players.

He has a whole lot to work with and like but the problem is finding a role for him, he would be an awesome outside mid prospect if he had the finishing skills and a good tagging option if he can develop the strength the question is whether either of these two will happen.

I think the reason he has slipped out of favour has less to do with his own form and more to do with the increased strength of our midfield group.

If Barham was a quality kick he'd potentially be the answer to our midfield and complete the premiership credentials of that portion of the squad. As it is he not an AFL quality player and is part of what holds us back - adding poorly skilled players to the squad. He has enough positive attributes to punt on his kicking getting to at least an acceptable level but chances are it won't happen. If I was Barham I'd put virtuall all my energies into becoming an elite kick in the hope of becomming an acceptable kick. I'd give him 2 years but if he still can't kick after that I'd delist him.

Love him

I think he should be persisted with

His super quick and what i have seen of him this year kicking has improved

He will be tagged with the bad kicking (Rhyce Shaw) for the rest of his career now

Has pace and courage, but worst kick in the AFL. His kicking isn't just bad or below average, say like Clinton Jones, its just plain terrible.

His only hope is as a tagger, we should be trying to phase out our poor users of the ball, not introduce terrible kicks into team. IMO we have far better prospects on the list.

With our midfield he will struggle to get a game at this stage. Needs to improve his kicking and he could be a real asset with his pace.

Agree he has poor kicking Skills and that what we DON'T need so I can actually seeing him being De-Listed at Season end

Seem to be allot of mixed opinions about him, I raised him as a possible consideration for next week and got told two different things in relation to his kicking. I haven’t seen the VFL at all this year so I can't comment on his kicking this year, but some people seem to think it has improved while others seem to think it is just as bad. I hope he will make it and IMO allot of posters write off young kids too early, although I can't see him breaking into the side this year, unless it’s only for one or two matches.

But maybe if his kicking has improved or does improve he might break in next year or the year after that at the latest. I don't think he is a terrible kick as one poster above described him but he is without a doubt (judging from last year) a bad kick, I think that with the right effort, and help he could either improve his kicking or become a tagger in the mould of Jones.

I won't be surprised if he gets delisted at some point, but I am relatively optimistic when it comes to Barham; there is something I like about him, not quite sure what it is just have a good gut feeling about him.

My observations on Jaxson have always been that technically he isn't a bad kick, it's just that for some reason whenever he gets the ball, he seems to make terrible decisions (especially under pressure).

He is only about to turn 22, so there is time, but I just doubt whether he has the ability to last on our list long term.

I don't know what his contract status is, so I can't comment on whether he would be in risk of "delisting" at the end of the year, but he would be rated in the bottom 5-7 players on the list in my opinion.

He may still improve, but he's no youngster anymore either.

I'd say the likes of Buckley, Rounds, Reed, Blight and some other youngsters will go past him if they haven't already.

Uh, he is an awful, awful kick.

His disposal is terrible, and when you add in the fact he is pretty much always kicking off balance and at full pace, and his decision making is poor, you never want the ball in his hands.

Confident in saying he'll never make it in AFL whatsoever. You can't be a poor kick, lack composure and lack intelligence on the field and be a reasonable footballer. Just does not happen.

What about Rhyce Shaw?
