Barham

Is a better kick (significantly), has more composure and has more intelligence than Barham.

Rhyce is a better kick now. What about when he was 21? He prob still was a better kick but I don't know about significantly.

And composure, Rhyce had terrible composure at his age. Remember the 03 GF?

You gotta be fair when comparing players. Kicking can improve.

Rhyce Shaw shat himself on the big stage in '03, I don't think it's really comparable to Barham fumbling and turning over the ball while kicking the dew in front of 500 people.

Shaw always had a pretty raking boot, his kicking in general wasn't bad, his decision making and ability under pressure was pretty questionable though.

In comparison, Barham misses rudimentary 15 metre passes when he is at training in the kick to kick drills. His natural action is pretty terrible and it only gets worse when he starts motoring.
It's very, very hard to expect such an ingrained process will ever really change. It's the same thing with training to learn a new language once you get past a certain age and stuff, that developmental part of your brain is already pretty much set and it's very hard to alter.

I can't see his kicking ever improving enough to cope at the top level, he just seems way too far behind the eight ball.
His only hope is as a tagger imo, he will never make it in a creative role regardless of his other assets. Even as a tagger I think he is too small and too easily outbodied, he has hardly put on any weight in the three years at the club.

I'd be pretty confident in saying that I don't think you'll see him at the family day next year. He might just get a reprieve but I doubt it;
O'Bree will definitely retire
Cook will be delisted
Corrie likewise
I think Lockyer will probably hang up the boots

You'd suspect Barham will be the next name amongst that group, never know what can happen in 6 months though I guess.

My observations on Jaxson have always been that technically he isn't a bad kick...

My observations are the exact opposite. He's technically awful. Unfortunately, I had big doubts about his kicking since before he was drafted, and nothing's changed as yet.

I think his action has cleaned up a little since U/18 days, but not nearly enough as yet. It's a shame really - that wildman hairdo paired with his porno moustache deserves maximum exposure.

I also think Barham's footy IQ is being undersold. He's never struck me as a particularly stupid player.

Racer's kicking wasn't just bad in the 03 GF - that's a bit of historical revisionism. His kicking was always shonky. I suspect his efficiency has picked up, looks okay whenever I see him play for the Swans.

I think people are going a bit extreme re Barham's poor kicking. He's only had a few appearances and pretty sure his KE was better than the shocker Ball played for us (@ 45% from memory). It was picked up on as a weakness, but in subsequent games I felt it had improved and definitely in the realm of acceptability.

As I said earlier, 10% extra would be good and is achievable. If it's not possible to improve kicking, may as well delist Cloke and Ball then.

Haven't seen enough of him to know either way, but I wonder if he just has to slow down and re-balance for a step or two before he kicks, rather than kick at flat-chat pace, which is much more difficult.

Those that watch the coaching seesions..how much are individual things like this addressed...from the photos we see, it all looks pretty general type stuff...is there much one on one?

Or is it assumed once your AFL, you should have the basic skills already?

Probably in line to be delisted at seasons end along with corrie, cook, rusling and maybe j-mac

J-Mac will need to rape someone to be delisted this year.

On topic however I can't see Barham making it unless MM suddenly see the light and wants to play a tagger in the mould of Jones or Ling. His kicking is never going allow him to be a offensive minded midfielder, we have too many better options already. I would like us to play with a designated tagger, yet i don't think that Mick shares my view and once Bucks takes over it may be too late for young Jaxson.

I think Barham's worth persisting with beyond this season, there will be other players in the gun before him and we don't want a big list turnover with such compromised drafts coming up.

I'm still on his bandwagon and it would be a shame to see him leave at the end of the year. If he gets delisted, then expect him to be picked up by Gold Coast. John McCarthy will be pretty stiff to be delisted as well.

You can add O'Bree to that list and possibly Presti as retirements.

Seem to be allot of mixed opinions about him, I raised him as a possible consideration for next week and got told two different things in relation to his kicking. I haven’t seen the VFL at all this year so I can't comment on his kicking this year, but some people seem to think it has improved while others seem to think it is just as bad. I hope he will make it and IMO allot of posters write off young kids too early, although I can't see him breaking into the side this year, unless it’s only for one or two matches.

But maybe if his kicking has improved or does improve he might break in next year or the year after that at the latest. I don't think he is a terrible kick as one poster above described him but he is without a doubt (judging from last year) a bad kick, I think that with the right effort, and help he could either improve his kicking or become a tagger in the mould of Jones.

I won't be surprised if he gets delisted at some point, but I am relatively optimistic when it comes to Barham; there is something I like about him, not quite sure what it is just have a good gut feeling about him.

I'm on the pro Barham side. Love the energy he brings to games, tackling pressure, explosive speed combined with fitness. Certainly needs to continue working on his disposal and add a fair bit more to his frame.

Personally I don't think he is all that far off getting a game and would love to inject him into the side to play against a top quality side ala Brisbane/ Geelong.

Disposal has certainly improved. His right foot is fine despite popular belief. Just mainly needs work on his opposite side more than anything, particularly under pressure situations. The club is doing the right thing by placing him right into the action in the centre square at VFL level to expose him to that level of pressure to force him to cope and improve in that area. Obviously doesn't compare to that of AFL level but certainly will aid his development.

I see him making it in the unlikely Toovey way. He is a hard worker and his progress is obvious. Don't give up on him.

Barham's kicks are so far off the mark it's not funny (on the basis of last year's performance, i haven't seen him play this year yet to be fair)...

he has a tendency to over-hit kicks, then follow up by over-compensating with kicks that fall wayyy short...

perhaps he can learn to be handball-happy (ala Cross- i think he did that in his most recent outing for us)

and i do agree, he'll perform better once he feels the love from Beams

He's a faster, more tenacious version of Matthew Priddis. I can see him make it.
...? What? Priddis is big, wins his own ball and basically is the driver of their midfield.

More of a (harder edged) Tenace for mine, or maybe Dennis Armfield minus the hair. I don't particularly rate him. He ain't going to get much bigger and I doubt he's going to improve his kicking drastically at his age.
