$40 a game thats pretty rubbish, surely some players are receiving more generous payment. There is some fairly strong players in the league past AFL/NEAFL/VFL players. But what do people think about the standard of the league (Black Diamond Cup/Premier Division) i see the newcastle rugby league 1st grade is very strong along with the npl soccer, how does the bdafl rank up against all these and other leagues such as AFL Sydney, Riverina etc.
First and foremost there isn't the budget to pay.
No clubs have a sponsor that throws bulk $$$ at the club to start with. So the budget would be coaches and perhaps playing assistant coaches. After you pay the comp fees, trainers, equipment, awards there's normally nothing left. Thankfully the region has never run off player payments and it'd be better if it stayed that way.
A club would need crowds similar to the BDAFL grand final day every week and a good sponsorship to create revenue for decent player payments.
I would have though Killarney Vale would be in the strongest position with their previous associations with Mingara. Any poker machine haven is always cashed up to the max. Not likely Bryce Singleton went there for free so they may have at one stage had flexibility in their player/coach budget.
Re the standard. The best 30 players are of high standard but you can still be an average footy player and get a gig in first grade. Times are changing for the better the depth is improving but it's still not an aussie rules region. The ex AFL/VFL types you speak of play simply due to geography or they've come home.
The important thing is the numbers keep swelling. Aussies rules is getting stronger. The last 5 years have been significant. Within the next 5 rugby league within the hunter region will feel the affects. The ultimate would be to get a senior and womens club in Kurri or Cessnock.
