The trade was:

IN: Dayne Beams, Pick 41 (round 3), Pick 44 (round 3)
OUT: Pick 18 (round 1), Pick 56 (round 3), Future Rd 1 Selection

Did we overpay?
Too early to say imo. If we finish top 4 next year and get Kelly and Quaynor in the draft I think the deal is okay.

No.

The closest comparison is Bryce Gibbs. Essentially 2 firsts for him including a top 10 pick.

Beams is significantly better than Gibbs, and when you calculate points for picks we essentially gave just our 2019 first rounder.

It's really a no brainer. Pick 18 was probably going to be wasted anyway.

Marginal overpayment.
We needed a 2nd round back + 3rd round back, instead of two 3rd rounders.

However if we get Quaynor and Kelly without going into deficit, it will be a win-win.

The Sam Murray trade stuffed us. Regardless of his drug suspension, which obviously made thing worse.

For a rookie listed player, who never played an AFL game, we should of never swapped our 2nd round pick out.

Im no academy point guru but I assume two picks in the 40s are close to pick 18

So no, we didnt overpay. Hes easily worth a future first rounder, especially one that should be 14+. It was a fair deal.

In 2009 we gave up our first second and third to get Jolly and Ball.

The Sam Murray trade was a 12 point giveup in the draft order. He was showing every sign of it being a good trade.

About right, looking at it objectively.
Dayne cost us next years first, and l believe we where going to anyway trade out this years to get the points.

Bid comes for IQ before 18 - we did well.

Bid comes after - time will tell with on field performance.

Yes, we overpaid. Two first rounders for a player who has likely already peaked, and may only have a couple of seasons left, is not good value. It won’t likely be felt too much this year, but entering the draft in the 30’s next year will be a blow.

Having said that, if Kelly and/or Quaynor become very good players, or we win a flag with Beams, no-one will likely care.
