Beating every other team in the same year

Just doing a few checks and just wondering if there is an easy way to work this out.

In 2009 the saints lost 3 games for the year, essendon/north during the regular season, geelong in the GF. all three teams they beat the first time they met them during the season - there by beating every team in the competition in the same year.

It also happened in 1950 when Essendon lost to North in the regular season but beat them back to back in the finals. Melbourne also managed it in 1956.

couple of interesting near misses, 2008 - Geelong lost to Collingwood and couldn't get revenge as they only played them once a year. Hawthorn in 2013 lost to Geelong twice in the season but beat them in the PF, however they also lost to Richmond out of the blue mid year.

It's happened a few times, St Kilda in 2009 was the 140th. Less common now with the "uneven" draw, only four in the 2000s, West Coast the last in 2015.

That's probably about right. It would have happened at least once in most years when there were only 12 teams.

In some of the war affected years every team probably managed to beat every other team at least once. 1916, for example.

EDIT: Richmond failed to beat Carlton in any of their match-ups in 1916. But still, 3 teams out of 4 for the year.

Less common would be finalists not winning a game against another side. Collingwood is quite unique in 2011, losing three games to Geelong as their only defeats for the season.

In 1981, Geelong who finished 16-6 (and then won the QF over the Pies before losing to the Blues and Pies in the 2SF and PF), lost their three meetings with Carlton and lost three of the four against Collingwood. I think in the mid 70's there was a scenario where Hawthorn couldn't beat North, but would beat the Tigers, who would beat North, a bit of a 3-way scene there.

Geelong in 2020 lost to GWS twice, but made the GF only to lose to the Tigers, who also defeated Geelong in their two meetings that year.

Doubt it. North Launceston went undefeated until the GF in 2003, so it would take a season looking like that, of which there have only been a handful...

By the way, am I the only person around here who has ever wondered what it would be like if one month of the year were devoted only to a new Global Trophy, ladder system, in which we have one team from each Local Govt Area in Victoria and 20 equally carved out region teams for the rest of Australia and one participating team per other country in the world all competing for a place in the top ten and better?

West Coast 2015. We beat every team that year. North beat us in our only H&A matchup but we got them back in the prelim.
Hawks obviously beat us in the GF and in the H&A but we had them covered in the qualifying final.

VFL/AFL 1897-2022 - Collingwood 2011 has been the only team to be undefeated against all other teams except the Premiers.
