Beau Dowler

1. He's coming back from serious injury, he's playing with some pain, its going to take another pre-season and work on his conditioning before ANY real assesment can be made to where he is at.

2. Box Hill's midfield is shocking, and for a player who goes on searching leads, if his team mates can't hit a target then it becomes virtually impossible for Dowler to get a lot of the ball. Would suit AFL as a link player across half forward to start with IMO.

3. Its ridiculous to judge players so young on the basis that players like Franklin are doing well. Its widely said it takes 3-5 years for young key position players to develop and be judged, yet people still take pot shots at a guy who we drafted for the long term, who is coming off serious injury in his first full season (last season he came back but was only on 1/10 of his athletic capacity in terms of fitnes). I just don't get it.

But it'll probably fall on deaf ears no doubt .

not on deaf ears. i read it looking at the structure of what you wrote hoping for a clear explanation, and yet its just more arguments that are as weak as beau's running ability.

for your first point, i said in my other thread that you cannot say you're happy with having a guy selected so high and requiring such meticulous and uncertain conditioning. it just does't give any confidence at all.

for your second point, i agree that bh midfield is trash, yet thorpe showed quite a bit, and so did roughead.

and on your last point, with what i just said about the other two kp players, i would compare these two more so than buddy. reason being is that buddy is a freak, and more like a flanker than kp in his play. if i were to compare the other 2, thorpe showed more in 1 game than beau's shown in all games, and roughie is pretty much at afl level, it was just team balance that left him out. roughie gets heckled for underachieving at being no.2 pick, but i think that beau has shown almost nothing and was best vic kp player and no.6 pick. forget the one yr difference, cos rough in his 2nd yr was doing well in the back as a kp player.

how is this guy going i am hearing that he is becoming solid player
Seems that no one has answered u so I will.
Solid is probably a fairly good description.
Nathan Brown type leg break a couple of years ago which u will understand has impeded his development. Tall and mobile but not incredibly strong. Has managed to maintain his place in side whilst more highly rated Roughead has been dropped twice.
Has kicked 10 or thereabouts(3 twice) thus far. If he maintains his spot, shows gradual improvement, and keeps that goal average, we'll be reasonably happy.
Jury out with many hawk fans.
Will really need to show something by seasons end to maintain spot as appears there are some coming through to vy for his spot.

Dont know how many saw the game but the delivery to the forward line all day was shocking. From what I seen Beau came up the ground abit and laid a few tackles. Not much opportunity for the forwards. Keep going Beau!!!!!

True, the disposal into our forward 50 was awful today but Thorp in his first game was able to find a bit of it. So was Roughead. Little too, found the ball under difficult circumstances. Dowler gave us nothing, nought, zero, not a cracker.

Dowler is miles off it. Sure he is still coming off a significant injury but let's not forget that he actually played a couple of games of senior football late last season and has had another pre-season to get himself right. Thorp, on the other hand was playing his first game and looked classes ahead of Dowler.

In a thread the other day I suggested that we re-assess in 12 months and I hold that view but on what I saw today, Dowler is far less advanced than I first thought.

thanks hopefully browny will be finally alright come the start of next year that would be about 2 and half years. Good thing Boyle is young and his best years are ahead of him

im not having a go at dowler because he has had serious injury and i would wait till end of 08 to judge get of his back every one hes only been at the club for over a year and he musnt be that bad if his played afl football

Paddy Ryder? good player, developed a lot in the off season.

Beau Dowler better player much more potential played well TAC in 2005 kicked 38 goals and finished 3rd in goalkicking, i have played footy against/with beau dowler at noble park and against for stingrays.

He is a good kick, strong marking chf forward. Box Hill Hawks shouldn't toy with him too much, they should just keep in the forward line and let him mature from there. he is still 2 years away from full development.

Have paitence, he will play a good brand of footy.

btw, we have a lot of key position players : Buddy, Mitch Thorp, Dowles, Roughead, Boyle and muston is capable of playing in that position.

6 KPP, 2 already developed ( Franklin, Boyle) if another 2 perhaps Thorp and roughead within two years we can be a much more dangerous side.

muston is definitely NOT a kp player.

once again it's the mobility and speed that is the problem.

i've heard that cambell brown got a running coach to work on his speed. perhaps it may be a very good idea for beau to get a running coach for both his speed and endurance.

forget playing football for a while, get your running right!
