This week sees the next installment of the South Melbourne vs Fitzroy rivalry.
The Bedford - Stephen Cup, named after Peter Bedford and Bill Stephen who represented South Melbourne Districts and Fitzroy, was born in 2008 as part of The AFL’s 150thth at the W.T. Peterson Oval on Brunswick St Fitzroy the first game was a thriller with the home side winning the match by 1 point when a goal from a set shot was scored after the final siren. The match was well patronized by both the South Melbourne and Fitzroy communities and received much media attention in the lead up to the day and following the result through the major newspapers, sports radio programs and network television news bulletins. The match is also featured in a short film currently screening at the St Kilda Short Film Festival.
This year it is South’s opportunity to host the game at our home ground, Lindsay Hassett Oval in Albert Park and in keeping with the community footy theme that resonated so well at Fitzroy last year before the game will be celebrating grass roots, local footy with some great guests from AFL Victoria’s community development program, greats of both clubs, past and present, local footy identities, a special match preview and of coarse plenty of prizes to be won.
Fitzroy fans are welcome to attend the lunch and can book by calling the numbers on the flyer or by email at smdistricts@gmail.com
