Before the Game

Kind of surprised reading what's been posted in this thread because I tought I was in the minority who are completly and utterly over this show. Andy Maher is hopeless, Lehmo is even worse (how this guy isn't homeless and begging for loose change is beyond me), Sam Lane is miss state the obvious, thanks for the job daddy! Mick Molloy, I don't mind so much, Dave Hughes, seriously, is he really that funny? Or do people just laugh at what he says because of his voice? As for Yawnie, sorry Struachnie, that got old after the first season. It was ok when it started because it was fresh and gave the feel of mates sitting around talking about the games, making a few jokes, but now, it's as stale as week old bread.

I'm a fan of Hughesy so I don't mind the show but agree with others about some of the panelists. Got a chuckle from Ms Lane on last night's show when she was shocked by the emotive Sun headlines about Wallace when a few days before she was going hysterical over a rubber rooster.:D

Strauchnie has always been a rip off of Brent but it still makes me laugh so I must be in the minority there.

that sucked balls. chocco you're a goose

"Cringeworthy" is not a strong enough word for last night's edition. I don't know if Williams was more happy that he won, or that he got the chance to sit next to Sam ! I don't quite know what the word is for that...was he actually "flirting"? Yuk!

Oohhh it was painful. Shudder...shudder....

I havn't watched it this year, so I don't know if it has gone down hill. But I liked the show, it was good for a laugh. I doubt many people expect it to be informative though.

Used to be awesome but has dropped off horribly in the past few years.

Get rid of Molloy, Lehmo and Maher. Bring back Hellier, Huddo and Fitzy.

Sack all of the writers - the majority of the jokes have been absolutely disgraceful. Bring back the banners and maybe, just maybe think of a new segment to do!

It pisses me off, but the audience that Strauchanie is catered to (the uneducated, easily amused, etc) would have never even heard of this David Brent character, so he gets away with it.

He gets away with it because it's a 5 minute segment on a footy show and not masquerading as a ground breaking new comedy show.

What did you expect from it?

Besides The Office isn't the first mockumentary style comedy with awkward characters. Monty Python were doing this (albeit in a more zaney way) in many of their sketches and the likes of This is Spinal Tap were doing this long before Gervais did it.

Sam Lane really is cringe-worthy. Takes tokenism to a whole new level.

Typical example of her ineptitude tonight.

She was talking about the free kick paid today for the deliberate rushed-behind, and asked 'Has anybody else been penalised for this so far this year?'. Somebody pointed out that Pratt from North was pinged a few weeks ago. Her reply: something to the effect 'Oh, okay, they have'.

WTF? Her job is following footy! And she didn't know this?

What makes matters worse is that the BTG had a laugh about the Pratt incident the first show after it happened - they even had a segment where they interviewed Gibbo who took the piss out of Pratt for his stuff-up!

Shambolic.

It is not the concept I am talking about. It's the character. I would expect a so called 'comedian' to at least come up with his own damn character, instead of ripping another one off completely! Every mannerism of the guy is Brent.

To me it's more Spinal Tap than anything.

I'd switch that to getting rid of Hughesy, rather than Molloy, besides that I reckon it would be a huge upgrade.

I could be wrong, but didn't they show Gibson taking the p*ss out of Pratt on The Footy Show, not Before the Game?

I think the most frustrating thing about BTG is that it has potential, but it's got the wrong people. I have never heard ANYONE say that they find Lehmo funny, or anyone who is even indifferent towards him. One of the lamest comedians ever. Three comedians is too many, it seems like they are always just fighting each other to get to the next ordinary punchline.

Case in point: Look at the Sunday Footy Show (especially now that Tony Jones has gone). The cast usually consists of Brayshaw, Brownless, Crawford, Taylor and Nathan Thompson and is infinitely funnier than Before the Game and all their comedians. Why? Because the ex players that The Footy Show have gone after are your stereotype boofheads, who don't mind being the butt of a few jokes and they have the chemistry between them.

If you brought in Ryan Fitzgerald and a Bill Brownless type and shipped out two of the comedians, Before the Game would be right back on track.
