Bell demoted?

Who knows what they really do at Cockburn or how their performance is measured?

Reading between the lines, sounds like there was some dissatisfaction with Bell’s performance, “but we think he’s a good bloke so we will keep him on the payroll and give him a fancy new job title”.

Doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence - it seems as though Garlick/Longmuir/Bell/Murphy come as a package deal.

What a B/S move....Feels like boys club boys switching armchairs among Themselves....We are going nowhere...
He might have a very expensive payout clause in his contract, so it's cheaper for now to just move him to one side not out.
As long as his influence is diminished on how a team is assembled to win AFL games it seems a positive move. I take the point about some fresh ideas from outside, but it's a first step

"The role will also see Bell work closely with the Club’s Next Generation Academy"
Wasn’t this the job Sumich had before he was escorted from the building?

The fact that Bell will be working closely with the Club’s Next Generation Academy suggests that this is most definitely a sideways move for him. The Club seem to be putting a really positive spin on it, but that’s ok and I don’t blame them for doing it, as the media will most definitely put a negative spin on it.

We wanted change at the Club and this is just the first of what I suspect will be quite a few changes.
Credit where it’s due, the Club is demonstrating that they are fully aware that things couldn’t stay the way they were, and they are trying different things.

It says more about Garlics intentions. It smacks of succession planning (which a CEO is supposed to do in theory) in giving Bell a non footy role and Joe Brierty a footy role. So we may end up having two internal candidates to succeed Garlic.

Hopefully theres a change being made to fix the place.

As a side note, the article references Bob Murphy - why we still waste money on this bloke is beyond me. Such a faffy, airy fairy role that he has, how the club even manages and measures his performance is beyond me. Arguably we've had a worse team culture (blokes leaving) since he's been at the club!

What exactly does Murphy do?

I dont think anyone actually knows. Here's an article on it though Bob Murphy to join Freo

Very airy fairy to me, but interestingly, this role was once performed by one Joe Brierty.

Basically I think he floats around the 2 teams singing koom-by-yah, drinking green tea and smoking a piece pipe. Poor mans Brett Kirk?

I don’t see this a demotion or move out of the way for Bell. Seems like there are some plans we aren’t privy to which need some horsepower.

Happy to see the club trying to be proactive, ultimately there is one measure in football and that is success on the field, that will determine whether this is the right move.

Joe Brierty is a very good operator was chased by the likes of Collingwood, Geelong and even west coast had a sniff around.

sounds like he is good at self promotion at least because how else would people know those clubs had a chat to him.

And also how does a guy from Geelong know how good a guy at Fremantle is anyway.

its a sideways move, both EGM roles. You rarely move sideways unless there is a fire to put out elsewhere. On the surface it appears he has been moved into a less critical role for the club.

Many on here have issue with his involvement in trading/contracts/list management. However, the new role seems even more focused on list management, drafting and trading so it can't be to do with that. Just a thought but since he's moving to a role to do with most of everything except day to day involvement with the current playing group (i.e. no longer head of football), could be player driven following post-season interviews leading to a shift away from direct control over the players and coaches. It happens. Cheeseman might let the coaches do the coaching, and players do the playing a bit more, with a bit less coaching from the sidelines and meddling if that was the issue.
