News Ben Cousins - turning his life around

Fantastic opportunity for Ben to get on with something positive and consistent in his life.

Structure cannot be underestimated.

I hope he takes it and and turns his life around.

All for giving someone a 2nd chance. Even a 3rd.

But not a 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th....

I don't understand why the club would go down this path, after trying for so long to put the dark past behind it.

Again, Happy to be wrong!

What hope have you got, if no body gives you any hope to hold onto...

Awesome. Hopefully can have a big positive impact on the team. People are dwelling on the drug issues. These issues are bens not anybody else’s. It’s not like he’s going to force feed our kids meth before training. On the flip side he is a smart, hardworking legend of the club. He has premiership winning mentality. He is the type of stuff we currently lack at west coast

For some reason the one thing I thought as soon as I heard the news though was that I hope the club has considered the potential trouble this could cause with our drafting. We had the Rances say they didn’t want Alex coming to the club because of the culture Ben helped create. If he does come back to the club, will parents be concerned enough to try and stop the club from drafting their sons? An addict just released from prison who has been said to be a negative influence (off-field) on draftees during his playing days is now back at the club around your 18 year old. I’m sure there will be some concern.

But Good on the club for trying to help him and If it does happen then I will support the club and Ben. I wish him the absolute best and would love to see him, for his kids and family, get clean, be healthy and not relapse.

I am all for the club giving Ben an opportunity to turn his life around, provided that its one chance and one chance only. If he screws this up, he is out.

The guy is a west coast legend, but he has had so many opportunities, more then most drug addicts, to turn his life around and has shown absolutely no want to do so. I hope for the sake of his children and himself that he grabs this opportunity with both hands and runs with it.

I wouldn't be putting money on it though, but I will be more then happy to be proven wrong.

Just wanted to ad my 2 cents here. Was so happy to hear of this last night.
Met Ben at a sportman's night during his time in Melbourne, and just came across as a nice guy, almost shy.
he seems like a good person with a major problem, who requires as much help as he can get from family and loved ones.
The Eagles are definitely part of his family, and this can only be a good thing. If this goes pear-shaped, who knows what can be done to help.
Well done to the Eagles for reaching out to try and get him back on his feet.

Good story, hope Ben makes the most of the opportunity .

Definately not concerned about the hair test anymore looks like he has just been found out of the wilderness supporting long hair and beard .

Great move by the club .

Do you think we could get away with sending him out on the ground in the #31?

Not sure on this tbh. I initially thought it was a PR stunt by the Eagles ( being seen to do the right thing ) What concerns me , what Ben says in public and what he actually does, ie taking meth to Esperance to give a talk to youth on the danger's of taking drugs??? is two different things. Was he still using inside on at least one occasion ? Did he say that he had no intention of giving up because he likes it ? I have a close personal friend who was addicted to meth for 6-8 months, he lost his wife and child, his house, his business. Put himself into rehab for 6 months ( isolation ) only just made it. I just hope Ben wants to turn his life around. Im pretty sure we all want Ben to live a happy, healthy life.

I don’t pretend like I know what needs to be done to reform a drug or alcohol addict but I think the structure of having work and being made accountable would aid the process.

Need to be careful who and what his in contact with but, because as much as being involved in community development suits his charismatic character to a tee, when he played he was that way at least, there may be some parents, schools or communities that aren’t as keen to have him near their kids and teenagers for obvious reasons.

Like a lot of others I wish Ben all the best, hope he can stay away from harm and hopefully builds that trust again with his own family, his ex/ partner (don’t know what she is these days) and kids again.

Good move to help Ben, also is a good football mind. Can help educate our young midfield.
He won't be working with the team,
community type stuff. With all the best will in the world you wouldn't let him anywhere near the team until you were absolutely sure he had cleaned his act up.

Fantastic news, very proud of the club. Hopefully, this can be the first step in rebuilding some of his life and his legacy at the club.

I'll be the voice of dissent.

The club should've waited until a good 6 months or so after release to ensure that Cousins was possibly/maybe/hopefully rehab'd. The guy was cooked several years ago and showed no signs of breaking straight while in the lock-up. Not sure why the club feels compelled to make this move. Highly dangerous IMO.
Maybe he won't be starting straight away and the role is contingent on going through some sort of rehab for a few months? Not sure cos I haven't looked into it.

BEST news EVER.

But will he play round 1?
Good set of wheels on him

On the flip side it shows the club is prepared to stick by and help past players through thick and thin. The past has past and the now is a much changed environment. Can't see any real negative in any of what the club is trying to do for Ben. The only negatives will come by Ben himself if he lets it but hopefully his stint in the cement house will be the life changer he needed.
Good luck Benny, you are a legend of this club so please do the righty and let the club help you in getting your life on track for you AND your family.
