Rumour Ben Johnson - Immediate Retirement confirmed

Just heard on the radio (3AW) a rumour that the great man Benny Johnson will be announcing his retirement today.

For the record I hope it's not true. I really love Benny and what he has brought to the team during his career. He bleeds black and white and absolutely loves Collingwood. Plus I want to believe in miracles that he can come back and make a serious impact on the team for finals.

If it does prove to be true, thanks for a wonderful career with the Pies Benny. :thumbsu: A premiership legend of our great club who wore the famous # 26 with distinction after inheriting it from the one and only Gavin Brown.

To be honest I think it makes sense. He was a fantastic servant but his body is letting him down and I think we have the ability to fill his role with the likes of Seedsman pushing through.

The guy just can't string more than 2 games together anymore.

I can still see him getting another game or two in the seniors this year, especially if we need to rest one of the kids, or to help fill in for Young. Even if he doesn't, I'd hope that the retirement isn't effective immediately, i.e. he sticks around until the end of the year and serves as a further mentor to The Seed and even Sinkers.

I love Johnno. I hope the Pies keep him on as a coach or something. Watch the footage from Utah at the start of the year, and watch how he encourages the groups after drills.

I hope his last game for the Pies is a grand final win this year :)

I dont think he will retire mid season, just retire at end of season. It is logical he cannot keep on the park due to injury. Great servant, hopefully he can get right and push to be selected in the finals

It's definitely last season for him. Been injured for a long long time. Not sure if he could even be match fit come finals. Either way, I still wouldn't think he's best 22.

You'd think if he's making an announcement it should be a "intent to retire at the end of the season" type unless he has broken down again.

Disappointing news if true, in an era of recruiting players from everywhere with no allegiance to the club BJ was born and bred Collingwood, and got to play in a premiership which was just fitting.

I'd love to see him run out one more time, but it's up to him really.

I think it is inevitable unfortunately. I think he was one of the real unsung hero's of our premiership year and has been there from the start.

He is really going to struggle to break back into the side, and his body is failing him.

Although only rumour at this stage, I think we've probably seen the last of Jonno.

I had a feeling it would be his last season a while ago. Last season he offered us run and pace, which we were somewhat bereft of. This season, with the emergence of the Seed, Williams, Sinclair off a half back flank and acquisition of Young, I think we've got it covered. I don't know if there's a best 22 spot for him at this stage. That being said, id love for him to stick around till the end of the season and help with the VFL, keeping fit in the event he's needed for finals.

Agree but if they are injured then thats a different thing altogether. He hasnt played all year. He has zero chance of coming good now so hes not an option anyway.

Yeah if the rumour is true it may mean Benny has to go in for an op in order to be right ...... so given it'll be his last year anyway you couldn't blame anyone in his position. Same with Didak too. It's a sad way to end a career being injured but that's the reality when you've played at the top level for 12/13 years each. And it certainly doesn't mean we don't love them. It's just sad they probably won't get a last game in front of a large crowed on the MCG. :(

Still though ... both Premiership players! :thumbsu: And everyone will be standing on their feet applauding for their lap of honour when the time comes. :thumbsu:

Always loved Benny, but I won't be completely saddened by his retirement.
I will be more so filled with a feeling of admiration, he is the epitome of working your arse off to get the best out of yourself.
You've had a great career BJ, we'll definitely miss you. :thumbsu:

Great servant of the club, hasn't been at his best these past two years but that's really due to old age and constant injuries. A die hard Collingwood supporter growing up and i'm glad he's a premiership player. Hopefully it's at seasons end but thanks for the memories Ben.

Well that could be Right. He be announcing this is his last season or Broken Down again and just saying he is Retiring now because his Body is Shot

If he can manage one more game it would be great if we could send him off in style against GWS. If not I guess a lap of honour would be the next best thing. He really had a great career and was the epitimome of a hard working Collingwood player.

This is a bit of an odd one..

Ben told people at the club he was retiring about a month ago.

Not sure why its taken this long for the announcement.

Maybe he changed his mind and wanted to give it one more crack but then go injured again..

Either way I wish him all the best and will never forget "THAT" Tackle..

I don't think it's as much a rumour than it is a sensible decision to leave on his own terms. I think we can all agree that Johnno has nothing to prove; he proved himself a long time ago, way before the premiership.

Dids will go, too, I reckon. He's always wanted to get to a World Cup, and next year will be his chance.

A true Collingwood man BJ is.

This is the right decision though he has been terrible and every game he has played this year and the game has simply gone past him which is perfectly normal and it happens to every player. Even Marty Clarke is ahead of him now so if he retired effective immediately I am sure it wouldn't be a bad choice for him. He doesn't deserve to put his body under the stress of trying to get back when he has nothing more to give.

Sad that another premiership player departs our squad but all the best to BJ in the future. Will always be one of my more respected Collingwood players.
