Re: Bendigo vs Williamstown, Windy Hill, Live now | Gumby 3 goals, 4th Quarter in progress

Thanks heaps for the flowing commentary Kong, you're a champion sir.

Are Duscher's skills good enough to consider him as a rookie? I have never seen him play but I remember his name being thrown around with Crameri non stop a few years back.

Thanks for that Kong! Great updates.

Extremely impressed with Gumbleton, Reimer's, Dell'Olio and even Anthony Long kicked a goal after going off hurt early! Great performances all-round given 2 men down on the bench for majority of the game!

Haha god, no.

I mean it was easy on the laptop at home, but I don't go to the ground often.

Hal Hunter played on the ball today and was quite good. Tough and hard at it, got a couple of big hits, but managed to play the game out. Kicked a nice goal from a stoppage at the top of the square. He is looking the goods.

I just checked the online TV guides and it looks like this match is on at 2:30am Wednesday in every state. Already set my PVR to record it.

Thoughts/observations arising from the game:

1. I've worked on the assumption that Dalgleish and Merret are fairly similar types. I suppose what really stood out to me from today's games is that Dalgleish looks much more prepared for AFL footy than Merrett does. Can anyone shed light on what the competing views of the players were at the time they were drafted and why the order of selection was not reversed (assuming that it would have been possible)? The two goals aside the rest of Merret's game looked very immature.

2. Long has that bit of magic that saladin has been banging on about. He managed to come back on the ground after suffering some substantial damage to his lower leg and was very good in traffice, won some good ball and was very good at setting up others (maybe it runs in the family).

3. Hille is a much bigger man than I have given him credit for. He was a good 35kg heavier than anyone else on the ground. Something about our jumper makes our players look smaller. It isn't until they are around meer mortals that you realise how big some of our players are.

4. Reimers is his own worst enemy. There is no doubt that he is good enough. He was bombing goals from 50 out and crunching packs that set him apart from everyone on the ground (there were some decent players for both sides playing). I hope he gets the chance somewhere to turn it on at AFL level because he is good enough to play 200 games.

5. Dell'Olio is another class act. He is such a smart player and appears to have all of the tools required to make it at AFL level. He was very impressive when he was involved today.

6. Just generally, I though that Steinberg looked ok in the backline given that it was his second or third game. He certainlly needs to be persisted with around the ground (because it is going to be near impossible to get a gig in the forward line at times).

Hal Hunter is a nut who has no real concern for his own safety. Baguley looks a clean enough player to keep around to add to the depth of small defenders at the club.

It was a good way for Myers to start his latest come back from injury. He got caught a little but it was generally because he was on the end of a hospital handpass. His ability to stand up in a tackle and/or get a kick 50m kick from congestion could be a real weapon.

Kav was classy, good overhead and physical but was a little quieter than I'd have liked him to have been. Her certainly looks a player of the future.

7. The Western Bulldogs recruiters clearly have no idea how to identify key forwards. They seem obsessed with mobility and speed and ignore strength and the ability to kick the ball. That kid Redpath is a better KPF prospect than anyone I've seen on their list. He is kicking that 4.1 at AFL level because he is big guy, realtively mobile and a very stong contested mark. Kicking the ball dead straight over 60m also helps.

8. We need to start planning our side plus Gumbleton. It is no longer a matter of him being depth, cover or not good enough. He moved beautifully and contested well all day (like Hurley and Ryder he seems a delite to rove to). He does not look hampered at all when he is on the field and, on that basis, I'd say that he could go on to become the player we drafted him to become. It will simply become a question of who misses out.

Also thought Browne/Hunter (what a beard!)/Deuscher and Little were good also.

Um.. he didnt have a beard

Assuming Gumbie keeps improving, I've got no problem with Gumbie, Hurley, Ryder, and Crameri playing in the same side. Whether they play at the same time in the forward line depends on how well our opponents and us are playing on the day.

If we’re on fire can’t see any opponent covering our best four talls. On the other hand if midfield isn’t on fire, forwards clogging each other up, or dropping marks ...

How was Browne's kicking - Think this may be his deficiency at AFL level ? Knows how to win a contested possession, has decent pace and reads the play OK. Actually he is a different player to his Father Murray Browne - who was more of an outside player, but with polished skills.

I was very impressed with Gumby, and Kav will be a player - once he spends another summer in the gym.

I disagree on Steinberg. He does some nice things occasionally; but he's not a key forward, he's not a key defender and he can't play midfield, unlike Monfries. He was a risky pick, and I'm convinced it will backfire.

Steinberg was okay yesterday, but his disposal is terrible. Kicked mostly mongrel drop punts, and when he did kick a drop punt he would miss the target. The difference from a having an ordinary game to a good game.

Tbh i only half watched the game while writing a uni assignment, taped it for later.
From what I saw browne is just a silky mover, technically his kicking is pretty decent, not Myers like penetration but he goes alright, no glaring clangers today.

Great

Expect him to get 10+games in 2013.
