Impey - Barrass - Scrimshaw

Moore - Gunston - Ginnivan
Hardwick - Chol - Watson

Meek - Newcombe - Day

Weddle (to be deployed where needed) - MacDonald - Worpel - Jiath
Sub: Breust/Mackenzie

We are in a pretty exciting position when we have players like CJ (back from injury), Frost (coming off a career best year), Mitchell, Gunston, Breust, Serong, Maginess, Ward and Morrison (the latter four finished the year really well) potentially missing out on making the side. In fact most will miss out when we are fully fit.

I read that Frosty played in the scratchy on our Training Camp.

Is he right for the first round* or does he miss the first couple?

*I refuse to acknowledge 'Round 0' so will just refer to it as the first round.
I'd say if he's playing already in match sim he's absolutely available for selection in a month and a bit.

Just reading some of these potential Round 1 (Opening Round) sides has me very excited. We have so many options and such impressive depth.

Amazing work by the list management team the last 2 to 3 years (along with the development coaches etc).

Compare these 22s to the ones we rolled out in 2020/2021/2022.

A ridiculous difference in talent (& some form) in such a short space of time.

Is Frost a legit option for Papley? I try and pick Hardwick forward but nope out every time.

Hard team to pick, multiple someones missing out.
I'm the same, he's our best small defender and 2nd isn't close. It all depends if CJ, Seamus or BMac can step up. Amon and Impy already there along side him.

Then at the other end, it's not like we are desperate for him he's possibly our 5th small forward behind, Watson, Moore, Macdonald and Ginnivan.

I think Hardwick will be used forward to provide a leading marking option. Different to the others who are more of a traditional ground threat.

I expect to see Gunners and Hardwick rotated at FF. We will give the oppo plenty of different looks.

They could also use Ramma / Scaife. Ramma might be preferred of the bench as the Fwd/Ruck.

It would be a huge ask to expect Chol to play the only tall fwd and back up ruck.

Gonna revisit soon but for a best 22 over the year.

B: Hardwick, Barrass, Battle
HB: Sicily, Scrimshaw, Amon
C: D’Ambrosio, Day, Weddle
HF: Moore, Lewis, MacDonald
F: Ginnivan, Dear, Watson
FOL: Meek, Newcombe, Worpel
INT FROM: Nash, Ward, Mackenzie, Chol, Impey, Jiath, Morrison, Maginness, Ramsden and Frost.

Depth here is wild.

Talls and smalls in defense who can defend, intercept, providing lethal ball use and quality run and dash.

Wings, one damaging hard working two way player with an insane left peg and a running beast on the other side.

Mids who can dominate through size, strength, power, explosiveness, class and skill all over with depth at their heels.

A ruck with a big dominate frame, who is hard working and with deft touch.

Damaging and hard working small forwards with extreme xfactor and two talls, athletic and a big power forward.

Topping off with a long list of depth, youth, prime and experienced.

2025 is going to be good for Hawthorn fans.

Outside of that 28 we have Reeves, Serong, Mitchell, Butler, Hustwaite and Bailey Macdonald who have all had a little taste and shown they can at minimum fill in as depth for an injured player and at best be a good role player with potential improvement. I also rate highly some of our yet to debut players like Mraz, McCabe and Hill.

Some wonderings for round 0:

1. Who plays on the wing with D'Ambrossio?

Jiath has been playing defence as per training watchers this pre-season, and Amon has done a power of running and won one of the time trials. Is this indication of a positional switch, and looking for Jiath to offer some run to go with Weddle and Impey, so we don't go too top heavy, and still are deadly on the rebound, and get Amon further up the ground to be creative? Or is it going to be a rotation between Jiath/Amon on the wing and half back? Other option is starting Morrison who has the best brain for this position, and often plays a really strong role for us, but doesn't have the athletic traits as some of the others.

2. Will Ramsden get a role in a 'three tall' set up?

We looked much better last year with Gunston in the side next to Dear and Chol, and we put far more pressure on in the air. Chol is a handy forward for us, but he definitely isn't a one grab type forward. Hopefully he can improve a bit on last year, but I felt his best games were when our side was dominating, and his worst games were when we needed him most, so am interested to see how he backs up this in the big games. Feeling is he needs support with Dear out and Ramsden is favourite to start. The argument could be made that with Hardwick there we could potentially get away with Chol, Gunston + the mosquito fleet and make it chaotic. But if Chol goes to help out Meek in the ruck it definitely feels thin, especially away from the MCG on a more narrow ground.

3. How many small/medium forwards can we play? Even without Breust, Moore, Watson, MacDonald, Hardwick, Ginnivan, is five. Breust himself feels like he is going to get back to closer to 2023 than 2024, which he feels was a blip. However, the biggest issue with playing Breust was leg speed, especially with Gunston in the same side, so that might work against him and he might see sub and be “rested” more than he would like. He still is such a natural goal kicker that having him still is going to provide some real quality depth through the season, but I'm really interested which way we go round 0.

It's a cracking squad! Exciting times ahead the competition for spots is going to be hot across the lines.

Half-backs, Wings, Half-frowards its very hard to pick it. How many specialists (specific positions) do you pick vs how versatile some players are, Sammy loves flexbility.

Try a round zero 22 currently i have Impey,Jiath,Gunners/Ramma in the 22.
