I haven't had a crack at this since Fort was brought on board and my mind keeps changing.

Gardiner, Andrews, Starcevich
Coleman, Adams/Payne, Rich

McCluggage, Neale, Devrob/Robbo
Big O, J Berry, Lyons

Rayner, Daniher, Zorko
Cameron, Mcstay, McCarthy

Fort, Bailey, Cockatoo, Ah Chee, (one of) Prior, Madden, Answerth on bench or sub.

Matho, T Berry, CEY, Fullerton, Lester are capable depth

E Smith, Sharp, Mcfadyen, H Smith, Carter Michael and maybe 1 of the new draftees are probably the next tranch of players that should be pushing for a game.

B Coleman, Uosis, Lane and the other cpl of draftees have work and development to do.

A big preseason will settle a few spots for a few players. An early injury to Gardiner or Adams could see Payne cement his place in best 22. I'd expect Robbo to start the year on the wing, he won't give up his place without a fight, but I reckon Devrob will take it over by years end.

I really liked the way Cameron, Cockatoo and Ah Chee worked together fwd when on the field together. With Zorks n Rayner taking their turn in the midfield I look fwd to seeing more of it.

Prior, Madden, Answerth all capable of that hbf spot I gave to Coleman or a bench spot. Great competition and depth should injuries hit Rich or Starce. But I reckon 2022 will be a breakout year for Coleman in his new found hbf role and give our defence a real facelift.

Hippy, when fully fit and confident, and only then, comes straight back in for Fort. We're back to our attacking best then. Forts inclusion until then will take the heat off Big O keeping him fresher at the back of the season.

It's a good, very good squad we have got together. 33 1st team capable, 6 pushing, 5 developing. Rayner n Answerth are like 2 new players. Plenty of improvement possible from Devrob, Coleman, Prior, Madden and Fullerton (maybe), improvement from all the other youth as well. Daniher n Cockatoo will be better for this year's run. If we don't have a disastrous year injury wise we will be very exciting to watch. Certainly capable of taking that next step or 2.

Wonder if we will have players that wont vaccinate?

If they want a job they will have to. Hopefully that sorts out any lagging hesitancy, though I haven't seen anything from any of our players to suggest they are anti-vaxx.

A certain WCE CHF and a potential GC rookie though? I will be verrrrry interested to see what happens there.

Seen plenty of nutters throw away jobs because they wont. Will be fascinating to see who sits out the year across the comp

Fairly similar side to what I would like.

I would like us to have a bit more dynamism in our onballers, with Rayner and possible Starcevich going through there. I would like us to be bold and not have Robbo as best 22. Not banishing him, but round 1 I would like Deb Rob, Starce and Rayner all in the mix so that means no room for Robbo. He'd be a cracking sub and should know if we underperform or have injuries he is back in.

I am also undecided on Fort. But I think if Rayner and Cockatoo are spending large chunks playing forward, I'd lean towards not having a third tall. McStay would go into the ruck for 5 minutes a quarter, and at that point it could be Daniher playing up the ground, and a small buy dynamic line up of mids / smalls to kick to including Rayner, Cockatoo, Cameron, Linc, Ah Chee. Depending on injuries I think Lester could be quite a decent role player as a forward who just gets it to ground.

That close to my opinion of their best starting team for round 1 2022. Only a bit of tweaking.
I’d have Coleman in the back pocket for Ainsworth. Berry HBF, to get some confidence back in his game, instead of Starcevich who can now be used in a variety of roles both as a back or in the middle. Rayner to go in the middle, McCarthy HFF. Then Robinson coming onto the bench and Starcevich also on the bench with both getting onball roles, or lockdown roles as needed. I think Ainsworth will need a few weeks in the 2’s to play himself into the starting line up. Medical Sub could be any of Madden, Ah Chee, Payne, Mathieson, and I’d really like to see Eli Smith get a run at some stage.
Hopefully Eli goes well in a few trial games and gets an opportunity

I reckon Fort will play from the start, we're at our best with the 3 tall set up. The more he plays the better. His ruckwork will keep Big O fresher for the backend if the season.

I don't see Starcevich playing through the midfield. I think he has found his home in defence. It was a career saving move for him and he has flourished because of it. He thrives on the challenge of the best sm fwd, I think he enjoys the responsibility. He moves the ball well out of defence with run or by kick. I think he is destined to take over Rich's role in a cpl of years as defensive general down back with Andrews. They'll be a pretty good team back there for a long time (Andrews n Starcevich). Throw Payne in with those 2 and it's a very solid long term defensive backbone.

Starc. Andrews. Adams.
Madden Payne. Coleman

Sharp Rayner Mcluggage
Oscar Neale Baily

Rich Danniher McStay
McCarthy Robinson Cameron

Interchange: Zorko, Lyons, Robertson Fort

Thought process:
Youth over Experience. Our current team isn't a premiership team.

Backline: power, height and speed. Rich moved forward so he can score more. Coleman, Madden and Starc give us speed both closing and rebound. Adams and Starc lockdown and versatility. Andrews and Payne the big boys. Harris plays loose.

Midfield: Jberry dropped. Needs to work on his disposal. More upside with Sharp.
Robinson moved forward permanently. Robertson finds a permanent spot. Zorko off the bench where needed. Rayner injects power. Baily, Neale, and Rayner to destroy midfields with Mcluggage and Sharp running hard on the wings.

Forward
Rich Robinson and Zorko's new home.
Robbo amazing overhead and new full forward. Rich.can goal from anywhere within 60, Zorko forward line tackling and goal sneak. Mcstay, Fort and Danniher causing nightmares. Charlie doing his thing.

Moving an AA HBF forward so the highest scoring team can score more while he’s one of our best offensive weapons already off half back?

And Rich is about a 1 in 3 chance from anywhere within 60m

Gee has there ever been a greater division of opinion on a player than JBez? Dropped for Sharp? He’s what 23-24? I think he will be given ever opportunity to regain form and fitness in the firsts.

We tried Rich in various positions for 7 or 8 years before he found AA form off half back. Can’t see him moving from there.

MRobo to full forward. Creative thinking at least. Is he consistently good in contested marking situations?

Haven't had a go at this for a while, considered everyone except for Hippy >

Darcy Gardiner, Harris Andrews, Brandon Starcevich.
Daniel Rich, Marcus Adams, Keidean Coleman.

Oscar McInerney, Lachie Neale, Jarrod Berry.
Hugh McCluggage, Jarryd Lyons, Zac Bailey.

Cam Rayner, Dan McStay, Lincoln McCarthy.
Darcy Fort, Joe Daniher, Charlie Cameron.

Dayne Zorko, Jaxon Prior, Callum Ah Chee, Nakia Cockatoo.

Found it hard to leave out Mitch Robinson, Deven Robertson and Jack Payne, would love to see James Madden and Noah Answerth push for a spot in the backline, Brandon Starcevich to have a go in the mids as Chris Fagan intimated during the pre season and see how he goes, I expect it not to succeed at this stage though.

Cockatoo with a really good full pre season into him and Rayner returning will be fantastic for us, also hoping Harry Sharp puts pressure on Prior and Ah Chee and stakes a claim for a gut running wing spot.

That is definitely a side with a huge premiership chance IMO.

Same players in my best 22 bar Cockatoo out and Dev in. I see Zorko as a forward this year, as well as Ah Chee, so unless Cockatoo is in ripping shape and ready to play decent minutes in the middle I am picking Dev instead. For the record my prefered midfield at the first bounce is Oscar, Neale, Bailey and Rayner with Clugga and Berry on the wings.

I much prefer "dynamism" to "X factor".

Good effort doing both AFL & VFL teams together
Also great including VFL player possibilities
The title of the thread is "Best 22 in '22" and as such you are spot on
However i think adding Hippy to any side before he returns after the bye in 2022 is a bit pointless at this stage.

Without Hippy in the 22 our side could/would change drastically
Does a 2nd ruck just rest forward some of the time
Does a 2nd ruck only come off the bench
Do we even go with a 2nd ruck
Will we go with another KPF with a 2nd ruck
Will we go with another KPF with no 2nd ruck and Jo goes ruck relief
Will we go with a medium size forward with some of the above thrown in
Will we go with another small with some of the above thrown in

This is what can happen when you lose a KPF and their is no automatic replacement running around in the twos

Well done C2L, the reserves line up looks pretty strong, you'd also expect Buzza to start in defence, maybe we will trial Jack Payne as a forward early in the VFL season. Should be a competitive VFL season if we have a good run re injuries.

Thankyou for the praise and kind words Section 5.

Personally, I feel like our club's early view on how the F50 would shape up in our Best 22, without Hipwood in the side until after the bye, would consist of having Daniher playing at CHF full-time without any ruck duties, McStay playing at FF and also pinch hitting in the ruck at F50 stoppages (if needed), Fort starting on the bench but possibly splitting time up in the ruck/3rd tall forward positions in our Best 22 (a.k.a Fullarton this year) and McInerney playing most of his time in the Ruck but now has the flexibility to spend small minutes as that 3rd tall forward (similar to 2019) while Fort takes the reigns in the ruck.

Brisbane Lions AFL Best Forward-50 Outcome (Before Bye)
HF: Cameron Rayner | Joe Daniher | Zac Bailey
F: Charlie Cameron | Daniel McStay | Lincoln McCarthy
IN: Callum Ah Chee | Darcy Fort | Deven Robertson | Dayne Zorko

Once Hipwood does come back though from his injury, Daniher would probably become that part-time ruckman again for us at FF, Hipwood plays back at his CHF position without any ruck duties, McStay starts on the bench but comes on as a 3rd tall forward with part-time ruck duties in the F50, McInerney plays mostly ruck-time without much F50 minutes and Fort goes back to the reserves to start as our starting ruck in the VFL team.

Brisbane Lions AFL Best Forward-50 Outcome (After Bye)
HF: Cameron Rayner | Eric Hipwood | Zac Bailey
F: Charlie Cameron | Joe Daniher | Lincoln McCarthy
IN: Callum Ah Chee | Daniel McStay | Deven Robertson | Dayne Zorko

However, it just all depends on how all the players perform during the pre-season and if all the players are all injury-free heading in first round of the season (like Rayner's situation) but proving no injuries from our main forward group, I think the club's best interest would be to continue with the 3 tall forward strategy in our Best 22 (similar to this year) to begin the 2022 season.

Thank-you M Malice for the praise, hopefully your right and we can see our VFL team be a lot more competitive in the reserves like the AFL side has been doing for the past 3 years. I probably see Buzza filling in that CHB/CHF position for us in the reserves don't get me wrong, I just decided to allow our main club players to get first dib in the lineup and use the VFL top-ups as injury depth and etc (as we will need it most likely).

Should be a good bloody season ahead for all three of our sides (AFL, AFLW & VFL) at the Brisbane Lions regardless :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:
