NO other player has taken so many party trick MARKS each year (from 84-96)in such a long career.
Hands down best mark ever, best player ever.
Pretty biased? Yes.
GAJ is the younger one. What an amazing collection of marks. Is it any wonder GAJ is regarded as one of the best ever. Add this collection to a video of GAJ’s best goals…
He was taking spectacular pack marks, marks when one arm was held, marks when he didn’t even appear to be in contention, and great grabs against great opposition players.
Mark Jackson must have hated playing in the same team as GAJ in 1984 and 1985. It was all Ablett when those 2 were competing for the ball.
In the sixties, Footy looked a lot like a great big game of "kick to kick" and most blokes could launch for the occasional hanger. From memory Doug Wade took a few speckies in his day, so too Bill Ryan. In the 70's it was Jezza, Hart, Noonan, Blethyn, Greening, Flower, Knights, Blight and David McKay. By the 80's we had Barker, Picken, Capper, Bosustow, and Moore and in the 90's it was Modra, Sean Smith, Ablett, Richo and then Russell Robertson who were the main aerialists. People will claim Carey but he was more of a chest mark than a classical flyer.
By the naughties Robbo was still taking hangers but he'd been challenged by Tarrant, Richo, Matty Lloyd, Stewie Lowe and the interstaters Burton and Treadrea. "Tredder's dad" incidentally (Stephen Treadrea) took the absolute best mark I've ever seen one day playing for the Collingwood reserves at Vicci Park. Treadrae was a small bloke a rover, and he stood on three blokes heads to take this mark, it was way better than Shaun Smith's!
We've been privileged to see so many great aerialists over the journey and they continue into today. Jeremy Howe has impeccable judgement and usually lands on his feet, his marks are always one grab as well so he makes it look easy. Jamie Elliott has been outstanding at his size and Bobby Hill has springs in his legs and he can seemingly jump straight onto defenders shoulders at will. Nate Fyffe has always been a great mark, so too is Isaac Heeney. The young lad playing for the Lions (kai Lohman) looks like a keen flyer as well.
