Best and worst grand finals of all time

2023 was a bloody fantastic game up until the final siren:(, first Grand Final I had been to since 2004.

Both great games but have never and will never watch either on replay.

Melbourne's win in 2021 is the most absorbing 12-goal thumping I've ever watched...

The game felt like it was in the balance, a great battle, and the Dogs were even looking like they'd make a statement in the third...and then it just went bang, all Melbourne...

When I lived near Ipswich, there was a smell in the air when an electrical thunderstorm was brewing...it would creep up on you, the day would be sunny at 1pm and you were oblivious to the increased humidity because the day was already too f###ing hot...and then by 4pm you'd be in darkness and flood and intense lightning and thunder...then you realised it was always coming...!

Kinda like Melbourne this day...!
Dogs led by 17 points half way through 3rd quarter

My favourite; 1989. Fast, skilful football with marks, plenty of goals, and all the drama of the day. Dipper, Dermott, Ray, Ayres and Tuck for Hawthorn. Steve Hocking had a split testicle, and Garry Hocking had a broken jaw after Dipper squared up.

My least favourite; 2005. Snoozer. Scrappy, low scoring, rugby style. The precursor to Ross Lyon's shit-boring football. The most overrated Grand Final. The emotion of Sydney breaking a 72-year Swans drought is the only reason why this is even considered half-decent.

Objectively, the worst Grand Final for a spectator would be 2022. 1995 was also a terrible game. Geelong never turned up.
1994 gets blasted for the margin, but for 3/4, Geelong was in the game, albeit clearly outplayed. The margin blew out in the last term. Still my favourite Geelong finals series of all time though.

1988 was a shocker after quarter time. 1983 was also a crappo game.

2023 was an excellent match. Collingwood were the better team in terms of general play, but Brisbane were plucky, and the margin was always within 3 goals. Collingwood could have won comfortably had they kicked straighter.

I reckon 1981 and 1982 are underrated. They were both competitive games that are undersold.
1987 was also a solid game without being brilliant. Carlton ran away late.
Both of Adelaide's flags were decent games of football - around 5 goals in the end but in dispute at 3/4 time.

2009 was a better match than 2005, IMO.

Best we just had it 2023

Worst there quite a few.

I would say the Covid ones in 2020 and 2021.

Other then that 2019 was crap and 2022 just as bad.

I liked the GFS in the 1990s and 1980s to be honest to me there was a huge gap 2004-2009 of average gfs same as the 2011-2017 years was terrible.

2023 was the best but to be honest the last 10 years have been ordinary

i can not see the Dogs (2016) win another one for at least 15 years same can be said with the Dees.

Always thought the 2020 and 2021 should not be counted as premierships but you keep the cup and flag and thats it.

2023 will always be remembered for the clear free kick that should have won the game for Brisbane not being given.

At that point in the game- they looked in total control - and only needed 1 more goal and they were home - thus if i was a Bulldogs supporter i would have put the game on record right at that point ( did this with Geel 92 ) and gone for a beautiful walk for about 90 minutes - just floating along in pure joy - euphoria- convincing myself that we have won the flag

Then when you returned home if i was a Bulldogs supporter it would have taken me about 3 months to believe that the final score was correct - Melbournes last quarter and a half was unbelievable .

2009 was a cracker
2006 and 2005 great contests
2008 was a very good game even though we lost.
2002 probably my most watched that was brilliant.
2023 also a great game.

The match would have had multiple missed free kicks through, but are not scrutinised as apparently the last 5 minutes is all that matters...

Brisbane had 2 hours to win, and they didn't - same as any football match.

That is true, and yet does not change how people will remember it. I didn't say what moment I was referring to and everyone knew exactly what I meant.

I will not remember the Grand Final for that. It was a nip and tuck affair all day. The game was too good to focus on only one umpiring decision which like all decisions, will never be universally agreed upon

On the same note I don't remember the 2005 only for Leo Barry's Mark, 1970 for Jesaulenko's mark, 1977 for Manassa's run, 1980 for KB kicking easy goals in the last quarter when the game was already over, or Ablett's 9 goals in 1989.

A Grand Final is so much more than one isolated aspect. To remember a match for only one decision is completely myopic

Can I ask why you think 2020 and 2021 should not be counted as premierships? Yes they were covid years but so what? Conditions were the same for everyone. Would you feel this way if your team had won?

I can guarantee that had their team won, they'd claim that the flag is absolutely legitimate
I can also guarantee that the premiers of 2020 and 2021 were exactly where the other 17 teams wanted to be, as well as their supporters
