I know i'm biased but surely, surely Warren Tredrea over Billy Brownless at 16. 4 AA guernseys at CHF and a Premiership captain, only being stopped by injury.

16. Warren Tredrea
30. Matthew Scarlett? I know Bourke is a legend of the game these days, but Scarlett is the best full back of his generation. That said, I don't know enough about the VFL to comment.
34. Ben Hart? Champion.
38. If you don't have anyone else... Roger James? :D

Nope.

The only more talented player than Hird since the 90s began. Unlucky to share the same number.

Agreed. Hird was amazing but Ablett Snr is the best of all time and deserves the number 5 spot.

Dermie should be at 23. Nothing against McLeod but Dermie is one of the best ever. Other then that it's a good list

I disagree. 1 AA guernsey (according to fullpointsfooty) to McLeod's 5 (including one as captain). A 300 gamer who has won 2 Norm Smith medals. I think he pips Brereton, and anyone else in the 23 quite comfortably.

Great thread.

35 is such a tough call. I lean towards Harvey but Daicos was incredible.
Daicos, because he could do the impossible. Harvey was Mr Consistency but a bit boring by comparison.

Ablett Snr over Buckley?

Ablett Snr over Hird?
I'd go Ablett, Hird, FigJam personally. And that's as someone whose favourite geniuses are James Hird and James Joyce. In no particular order.

[23] Dermie?
Yup.

(Or Peter Cransberg, of course. ;) )

Yeah or you could say Dermie won 5 day and 5 night premierships, and was stiffed for a norm smith when he kicked 8 goals in a losing grand final, a record at that stage. I wouldn't say quite comfortably, Don Scott wasn't too bad either, and that's just from Hawthorn.

Fair point, but if we're doing it on flags why don't we just list the Hawks squad from the 80s with some early 90s lions thrown in?

It's probably not as clearcut as I made out, but i'll be surprised if you can find another number 23 with the individual accolades that McLeod has. He's been a champion over 300+ games.

In any case,

16. Tredrea > Brownless
34. Ben Hart > McGuane

Assume you mean 00's

Gordon Coventry kicked 9in a grand final back in the 20's. It wasn't a record.

And surely Leigh Matthews deserves a spot alongside greats like Nathan Foley and Liam Jurrah.

That was a record until Ablett kicked 9 in 89'. I think Dermie also got reported 3 times in that game!!

But you can't base everything on Talent. Longevity is a form of talent. Consistency is a form of talent. In the end Plugger kicked more goals and will be remembered more than Ablett snr as he is "The Greatest Goal-kicker of All Time"
