The 2 Wakelin boys have been brilliant at full back over the past few years. Both not stars but both never stops trying and both have heaps and heaps of courage, I have played full back before and it is one of the heardest jobs in footy and those 2 i admire by the way they play the position.

But saying that i think Rutten has over past them.

I'd take Scarlett because he's just a gun who not only beats the opposition best but hurts you on the rebound with his run and skill. Not hard to believe that he's related to the one and only Bruce Doull and all he needs is a headband.:)

Hudghton and Thornton are two of the most under-rated full backs in the league because they play above their weight and height.:thumbsu:

It is refreshing to see some open minded posts already in relation to this question. Would be interested to see how the Essendon supporters rate Scarlett, Michael, Rutten and even Glass in relation to their own beloved, but slightly past his use by date, Fletcher.
The fact you say Fletcher is " slightly past his use by date" shows you have absolutely no idea Fletcher had one of his best seasons in his career and won us a few games. I'd take Harris if i had to choose any Full back, has some real talent but for next season i know this may sound biased but im happy with Fletcher he can be an attacking player and a very good defensive player which makes him so handy.

It would appear, though, that "one of his best seasons in his career" still leaves him languishing behind Scarlett, Michael and Rutten in the minds of the supporters on here, who are actually giving objective views, rather than the predictable one-eyed views of an Essendon fan.

Heres How i rank em, based on last year form

1. Ben Rutten
2. Matthew Scarlett
3. Mal Michael
4. Darren Glass (most improved player of 2005, conceeded 2nd fewest goals)
5. Darryl Wakelin
6. Dustin Fletcher
7. Leo Barry (reason he is so low cos I think he gets a free ride from Craig Bolton, the real star in that backline)
8. Simon Prestigiacomo
9. Darren Gaspar (wud be higher but is old)
10. Brian Harris (will move up once he progresses more as a FB, still young, still hasnt fully developed)
11. Max Hudghton (cant look silly against the likes of Lloyd)
12. Robbie Hadrill (cos he didnt play last year, will move up as older heads move down)
13. Jon Hay
14. Brett Thornton (Overrated, Pav took 12 marks on him in 1 and a half qtr of footy)
15. Nathan Caroll - Unproven
16. Whoever Hawks FB is if they have one

calling in re-inforcements? you really are pathetic.

I've already said it twice. but I'll say it again anyway. read what I originally posted. I said widely regarded as one of the top 3 fullbacks in the competition. I didnt say he is the best or even regarded as the best.

I have no problem rating Michael right up there at the top and Scarlett has been impressive in the last couple of years. however Fletcher has been considered one of the best a lot longer than either of them. don't believe me? jump onto www.essendonfc.com.au login to Bombertv and watch a few of Fletchers best games from the last few years, particularly the 2nd one against the cats last year, and listen to people such as Lyon, Brereton, Cometti, even Eddie Maguire paying Fletcher his dues.

I know it burns you up, being a long suffering blues fan, but saying Fletcher is one of the best FBS going round is just like saying Hird is one of the best ever. It's not one eyed it's absolutley true.

what is one eyed is hacks like yourself unwilling to pay a champion any respect simply because he plays for the team you hate the most. that my double-digit I.Q'd friend is simply childish.

The consensus in this thread seems to be that Fletcher is not in the top 3, but I suppose a one-eyed opinion should outweigh the opinions of others who choose to look through both eyes. Not!

Best I've seen:
David Dench - the best by a mile
Matthew Scarlett - catching up to Dench
Chris Langford
Geoff Southby - better than the 'full back of the century'
Danny Frawley - underrated, played mostly under seige in bad teams
Rick Kennedy - a mean mutha
Gary Malarkey
Stephen Silgvani
Dustin Fletcher
Danny Hughes

Of those playing now :
Scarlett clearly
Fletcher
Michael
Hudghton - underrated
Gaspar (when fit)
