i think taylor and buckley are just as strong, if not better than the melbourne duo. may and lever whilst very good, are aided a fair bit by just how defensive melbournes gameplan is. taylor and buckley function in a team that has a much greater emphasis on attacking surge football and hold up just as well as lever and may IMO.

gws have better small defenders / rebound than melbourne as well through idun, whitfield and perryman. add himmelberg who can simultaneously man an opposition key forward and generate plays through his field kicking, i think giants have the best defensive unit of any side.

1.gws
2. st kilda
3. melbourne
This plus Haynes hasn't fallen off a cliff it's just others in team are just ahead of him now.Aleer also was in Kingsleys back 6 at start until he got injured. He won the vertical leap at draft testing...So really it's a quality back 9...Our mids at times were beaten convincingly but it was our backline that kept us in games.

Melbourne IMO have the best backline and midfield. But one of the worst forwardlines.

Sure they may have a good points for, but it's due to the sheer rebound and intercept from backline + great midfielders who push forward or find guys lace out.

StKilda had the tightest backline in 2023, all the more remarkable when you consider they were one of the worst for centre clearances. Expect them to be even better in 2024 with development of NWM.

No real surprise as Lyon coached teams have always been defensive more than attacking.

Yep. It is not about the "names" you have in the backline, it's about how they play together. To be fair Pies, Blues and Dees were all around the same mark in restricting scoring.

GWS for mine. 3 of the best lock down defenders in the game in Idun, Buckley and Taylor. Rebound isn't as flash as some other teams but they are elite at sweeping up loose balls and getting their scoring chains started.

It’s interesting that all the serious Premiership contenders have very good back lines. It’s one of the main reasons why my club never goes anywhere in Finals.

Yep - in any of the years where Port was top 4, take a look at the back line of the premiers and the Port back line of that year. Not comparable, and hence Port's acquisitions over the trade period.

depends on where Collingwood play the best "swingman" in the game, the one and only Billy Frampton. If he plays forward we have the best forwards in the comp, if he plays back we have the best backs.

Docherty Weitering Williams
Saad McGovern Newman

Kemp

Pretty handy if all stay on the park
McGovern had played only 24 games in 3 years, but last year managed 22 and had his best year, it's been a long wait but he was critical in Carlton's run last year imo

That is a dangerous backline on paper but those 6 have never had consistent time together on the park, maybe this year
