Haydn Bunton sr.

Anyone who wins 3 Brownlows then goes to WA and wins 3 Sandovers when both comps are powerhouses is for me the best of all time.

dude he kicked over 900 goals as a rover then a small forward . . .

while this has been brought up i will just add in the fact that Ablett only played full forward the last five years of his career and kicked over a thousand goals, what could have been his goal tally if he had played a full career at full forward? scary to think how many the great man would have slotted if he played as a full forward right from the start instead of a wingman until he was 30

Ditto Leigh Matthews, Kevin Bartlett, etc . . .

Leigh was a rover then a small forward so i'd put him ahead of ablett to be able to kick so many goals from those positions, whereas ablett was a hf/wing then full forward.

Bear in mind however, that Mathews played 332 games while Ablett played 248.

The goal per game average therefore over their careers is 4.2 to 2.8 in favour of Ablett, and we know both of them played significant parts of their career away from full forward.

abletts years he played as a full forward he cracked the ton every single one of them except 96. matthews was never able to crack the ton, ablett was a better forward/ more capable of kicking goals then matthews was.

Matthews played his entire career away from full forward. He was a forward pocket, never a KPP.

I knew you'd pick me up on that. It's not a fact that bridges the discrepancy between their goal scoring averages.

Mathews might have kicked another 250 goals if he had played in the forward line for his entire career. But Ablett would have too, and his average would have thus moved further ahead of Mathews' by virtue of having played less games.

I'm not talking about him playing his entire career in the forward line, i'm talking about him not being a full forward at any stage.

carey
then ablett sr.

matthews toughness is wat made him who he is. without that he wouldnt be much...

What? Yeh he was tough, one of the toughest....skillful, courageous and talented players ever! Excelled as a rover and a forward, booted 900+ goals, 7th most all time. Multiple premiership captain, now one of the greatest coaches ever. Did you watch him play?

Without doubt, he tops the list of greatest players of all time, which obviously include the likes of Ablett, Carey. Voss and Hird are close to that group.

is their any particular reason why a forward pocket player is not able to kick goals? if they are good enough a forward pocket player will kick just as many goals as the full forward, it is a common sense that when your team is kicking in to the forward line they will most often kick it to the best player down their, not always to the player at full forward.

Greatest coach ever yes, without a doubt i will give you that, i agree with you on that one.

Forward pocket players usually average fewer goals, more disposals, they are not the focal point of the forward line.

I know you're not talking about that FFS, we're going around in circles now. You and I started conversing on the topic of goals kicked and percentage of career spent in the forward line. I clearly acknowledged in my last post that that Mathews was a fp in his latter years, not a ff, but I subsequently stated that is is not a redeeming fact with respect to trailing Ablett's goal per game average.

Leigh Matthews was a thug, simple as that. Would be watching a fair bit of footy on the sidelines if he played today.

Spot on.

Bunton polled 122 Brownlow votes in his 119 games, averaging 1.03 votes per game. In the history of VFL/AFL, no other footballer has averaged over 1 Brownlow vote per game over their career.

It is a redeeming fact, fps average less goals, more possessions.
