In the spirit of name players we played with or against, I was picked in an association side to play a SACA XI in the summer of 1988/89.

A guy named Chris Killen had come over to SA from NSW to try to break into shield cricket. He already had a bit of a reputation as a hot headed fast bowler.

Anyway, we lost a couple of early wickets (I went in at #4). I was at the non strikers end for the start of Killen's next over and his first ball of that over my teammate let a ball go outside off. I said 'well left' - at which point Killen turned to me and said '"f*** well left. You have no f*** idea. Cant wait for you to get down that end" etc etc.

He was extremely sharp & I must admit from the sanctuary of the non-strikers end, I was not looking forward to facing him.

My teammate played out the over (maiden) and after that Killen had a spell - which I was eternally grateful for.

I never did face him

I think he played about half a dozen shield games for SA and then I don't know what happened or where he went. Sort of faded off into the sunset...

On another note, I faced a young Greg Blewett in a pre season game and he was very quick.....

Thought that name rung a bell…..

Dubbo boy!!! (Where I spent a lot of my formative years)
Even as recently as 6 years ago he was being used as a ring-in player for some of the T20 games there for the his former local first grade side periodically.

He still gets talked about in hushed tones a bit by the older generation there. ‘Oh this kid is quick but he’s nothing on Killer.’

That’s great….not too many on here would remember him.

Even though I didn’t face him, he’s probably the quickest bowler I’ve seen being involved in playing in a game.

Don Nash was another Dubbo boy, I never faced him he was just before my time living there but a few of my mates got to play him here and there and said he was scary.

Tremain was the quickest I faced I think but as I said he was only about 17-18 I’d say and about to go to Sydney so he would have only been warming up at that stage.

Our club had a guy called Kent French who played a few games for the Comets when they were in the MC Cup and allegedly got clocked at around 140 clicks and was sort of the benchmark around here where I’ve played most of my cricket but it was before I joined the club. He had no idea where it was going by all reports which probably made it a lot worse for the batsmen.

For me personally the scariest experience I’ve ever had wasn’t even in a game, it was in the nets when this Indian gentleman came along to training one day and asked if we were looking for players which we answered in the affirmative. He was wearing jeans and thongs. It was like the Sylvester Clarke story or something where he just sidled up to England training and put the fear of God into Atherton etc half full of piss.

He came tearing in around the wicket barefoot, landing about half a metre over the popping crease, and every ball he bowled smashed into the rubber stopping mat behind me before I’d had a chance to play a shot. I was one of those ‘false bravado’ idiots that would never wear a helmet even if I was scared just to try and not let the bowler think I was worried; it was the closest I’ve ever come to telling my mates to bring me one. I was shitting my pants.

Anyway he played two games, sprayed them everywhere and we never heard from him again

Whenever a new bat comes out with what looks like shiny new pads or a brand new stick I love politely asking them how new they are and reminding said batsman that Sportsmart have a 7 day no questions asked return policy for unused items.

You and the staff at your local store on first name basis for that reason?

I played against Don a few times , was very slippery.

Quickest I faced in premier was Shane Harwood. Mick Lewis was the quickest before that but Harwood had a yard on him imo. Both on their day when they wanted were tough work.

Anderson was rapid until he turned into the typical English bowler he became . Devon Malcolm at around 40 on a 10 pace run out can still get them through .
Was a friendly guy too .

I think in one of his first tests against England he bowled fairly early in one of the innings.

He was charging in and looked fairly sharp for a guy in the team for his batting.
He's a year or two older than me so I never got the chance to play against him at school but I played with a lot of guys who did and they said he was that much better than anyone else it was ridiculous.

Always looked a real ‘natural’ cricketer did Blewy whether with ball or bat.
Not quite in the Martyn class for grace or elegance but looked like batting came very easily to him and his bowling action suggested the same
