Stands out from the conventional 3-4 minute pop songs. Builds up well, has different sections all with different sounds, so it isn't a repetitive and ends in an interesting way. Easily the highlight of the album.

My top 5 songs of the year.

múm - Sing Along(Sing Along To Songs You Don't Know)
Chuck this on múm's last album and it would have fit in without anyone noticing anything odd. That's why the album has been criticised, but imo, it's a winning formula and this song is the highlight of a beautiful album. Simple vocal melodies that make you want to sing along(Soz for that), combined with an odd mash of different mixtures gives a childlike essence to the band. The broken english lyrics only add to that. It's a long way from their ambient glitch beginnings, but the band has evolved into one of Iceland's finest regardless.

The Basics - With The Ship(Keep Your Friends Close)
Massive depature from the groups previous 60's revival style. Having said that it still sounds like the basics, or at the very least, another side project from Wally De Backer. His off tempo drum bombs are still present, despite being in a pop rock song that the mainstream stations should be all over. A killer chrous, which crescendos beautifully with Wally breaking into falsetto. The suprise hit of 2009, without a doubt. If you like Gotye and The Basics previous work, there's a good chance you'll hate this, but I think it's fantastic catchy pop.

Kid Cudi - Soundtrack 2 My Life(Man On The Moon: The End Of Day)
Unfortunately, the mass hit 'Day n Nite' may detract people from what is a fantastic album by Cudi. It breaks the trend of the drug fuelled, sci fi theme of the concept album, but only lyrically for this track. It is a blunt description of his life growing up, with honesty that almost makes you cringe. Cudi succeeds where his counterpart Kanye West failed, by proving you don't need to resort to cringe worthy auto tune to create a hip hop concept album. Cui is limited in vocal abilities, but it adds to the charm of the album, and this track is no exception, with a fantastic sing-along chorus.

The Antlers - Bear(Hospice)
2009's Skinny Love. Beautiful softly sung melody that breaks into a catchy pop chorus. No doubt the lyrics would have been tough to write considering the subject matter, but the metaphor of a bear cub works beautifully and you don't need songmeanings.net to figure out what it's about.

Milkman - Circle of Fifths(Circle of Fifths)
Coldplay's Viva La Vida is no doubt the years most overused mashup track but it generally works really well. This track, from little known Milkman is no exception. Uses a variety of popular songs from various years and genres, but the ending combining Katy Perry and Ok Go is the highlight.

Best track of The Blueprint 3 by far.

And Paul Dempsey's musical ability is as impressive as his monotone droning voice.
