A successor was announced on FB today

Just had a read of it. Hearing not a very happy team at Sunbury. Players set to depart for Gisborne and other local teams if they haven’t already done so.

Issue being?

Player egos or coach dissatisfaction?

It’s a money issue so I would say player ego. Every one who plays football these days thinks they’re worth money. Has the BFL got player clearances available online?

It's not publicly accessible.
It'd be disappointing for Sunbury if there were an exodus, from the outside it's seemed they've done a good job of developing their players & you'd hope any issues can be worked through.

Yes I agree. Time will tell, this is only from what I’ve over heard last night at dinner at the social club.

Caught up with a bloke I hadnt seen for a while this morning he told me his granddaughter plays under 10s at Sunbury. Had their last pre season training night for this year xmas eve, WTF
Someone needs to step in and ban this stuff. They are kids for gods sake
Childcare for an hour whilst the parents nip to the shops for some last minute items?

But agree, primary school age shouldn’t even start pre-season until March

Don't know much about it, but if the training is pretty light hearted, (which I imagine it would be for kids of that age), and it gets them off phones, iPads and computers etc, gives them some exercise and allows them to make new friends and learn to socialise then surely it is not something to complain about.

Beep tests, Yo Yo tests, sprints etc all should be banned until U18s…work on the skills and fundamentals !

The gathering was for the kids for Christmas. A harmless bit of fun and got the kids off their iPads and phones. Was well received by all. Sunbury are in a good place and the mass exodus you are mentioning is far from the case. They will be thereabouts in 2025. Have a great batch of experienced and young players combined with some good recruiting.

First time poster, long time reader. Hope everyone had a great xmas and new years.

Yes, you are right in that egos have played some part in this. Although clubs never want to lose any players, The reality is the majority of those that have left Sunbury are fringe players who are seeking senior opportunities and/or cash.

Sunbury is surrounded by several RDFL and lower level EDFL clubs who are willing to pay three, four, even $500 a game for a reserves player at Sunbury. Not to mention the 2 new clubs entering the RDFL in south and gisborne giants are both coached by ex Sunbury coaches who've made no secret of their intentions to raid Sunbury's list and are throwing around some ridiculous offers.

What also doesn't help is that the RDFL's salary cap has been the same if not higher than the BFL cap in recent years so a fringe player is worth a lot more to those RDFL clubs and they can pay it.

No doubt all clubs in the BFL go thru this at some stage. It's just a case of working with what you've got, rather than worrying about what you haven't got.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Years to you all.
Good post & welcome, ICS.

While all clubs lose players to district or metro clubs, having former employees raiding the club is pretty low character stuff IMO.

I agree that the disparity in caps is problematic & it doesn't make a whole heap of sense, not that I'm a fan of the salary cap anyway.

The Lions tend to do a great job of promoting from within so with a bit of luck, they'll be able to cover any losses without too much hassle.

The fact you’re calling them employees means that you accept that it’s business. In many businesses, a leader will leave and then others will follow that leader across to a new organisation for an uplift in salary / wages.
If it were an amateur game, the “doing it for the jumper, for your community etc.” would hold weight, but it’s not so it doesn’t.

Coaches are employed by a club, yes.
Low character people seek to rip off people that have given them an opportunity.
Kudos for missing the entire point of community sport though.
People may well do it, obviously, it doesn't mean it'll win them any fans.

You’ve missed my point, if you accept that it’s a business, then it’s a business and employees are free to move if they find a better opportunity.

As someone involved in community sport, for little or no financial compensation*, for decades, I do believe I get the point.
I’d like to get back to an amateur ethos, but that ship sailed before I was born.

*For complete transparency, I umpired in a league where the match payments barely covered my travel expenses, if I was doing it solo. When there were two of us we had to split the payment.
