if dask put it on, for example, geelong to be freo last week at odds of $1.04, does he get to keep $10,400 or just $400..

In other words does he get the total or just the profit? Because when you get free bets on some betting agencies, they will only let you keep the profit..

Chief, just wondering what's going to happen with the board-specific prizes? I think I managed to win the DT board competition, is the prize still the year platinum membership + 09 Almanac?

Cheers, and congratulations to daskalou on taking out the main prize. :thumbsu:

Chief / Jim Boy

For pure statistical interest's sake, can you let us know:

- the score if you tipped all favourites
- the score if you tipped all upsets (i.e. default if you didn't tip)

The economist in me suggests that these should be pretty close, if the bookmakers have any idea what they are doing.

Thanks!

Edit: Also wanted to thanks for running the competition, we used this as our work comp and found the format worked very well. Might work even better with a couple of small tweaks but much better than the usual run of the mill one!

Ok, this is what I've been told by Sportingbet.com.au:

  • I get 5 x $2,000 free bets. They expire on 2nd October 2009.
  • If I bet correctly, I get the winnings minus the stake. So if I bet $2,000 on a $1.50 favourite and it comes good, I get $1,000 deposited as real "funds" into my Sporitngbet account.
  • I then need to "turn over" that $1,000 again to actually get it converted to cash. This means that if I then bet on a $1.10 favourite and get it right, I get to take home $1,100 (from the original $2,000 free bet).

I've asked if I can have the free bets split up into smaller amounts (eg. 50 x $200), because placing $2K on one bet is a little scary... I wouldn't mind getting the expiry date pushed out also (who gambles $10K in one month??).

I wonder what 2nd and 3rd got... Was it 3 x $2,000 or 5 x $1,200 for 2nd (and 2 x $2,000 or 5 x $800 for 3rd)?

If it's like any free bet system I've ever seen (and I've gotten plenty) it'll be the $400.

lol The $1.10, 1.20, 2.50 etc... quoted by bookies is very misleading as it includes the money you're "risking" in the transaction.

In other words 1.10 really means you're risking $1 for every 10 cents etc, etc.. the bookie is. It' only when it gets to/above $2 that you're either risking the same amount or less.

So yeah the same applies to the $10,000 figure, 10,000 * .04 (1.04 - 1 = 0.04) = $400. lol

Unfortunately if you want to win the equivalent of the free bet amount you have won you have to pick a side with odds at around the $2 mark.

The question I'd be asking is whether you get to keep the $10,000 free bet amount until you lose or once you use it (lose or win), it's gone.

I just realised the winner above has done his research already.

I've asked if I can have the free bets split up into smaller amounts (eg. 50 x $200), because placing $2K on one bet is a little scary... I wouldn't mind getting the expiry date pushed out also (who gambles $10K in one month??).

It's not in their interest having this debt hanging over their head so it figures they're trying to get rid of this liability as soon as possible. This limited time frame means you'll have less chance of actually making any money out of it. Good luck because you'll need it.

If I were you would put my 5 bets on odds around $1.80-$2.00, then hopefully get $4000-5000 back and then put that on a heavy favourite (ie Goodes to win Sydneys votes and guarantee around that same amount..

just my opinion

The guys at Sportingbet.com.au have to one of the easiest mob I have ever dealt with.

They happily changed my free bets from 5 x $2,000 to 50 x $200, and were super nice and helpful over the phone when I had a lot of questions that needed answering. :)

For those that are interested, this is one option to most likely get at least $6,750 back (however if there is a disqualification or an injury I lose everything):

  • I chose to bet on an even tennis match where there was no clear favourite (it was paying 1.87 and 1.91 for each player to win).
  • I then distributed my bets evenly across these six scenarios: (1) Player 1 winning in 3 sets, (2) Player 1 winning in 4 sets, (3) P1 wins in 5 sets, (4) P2 wins in 3 sets, (5) P2 wins in 4 sets, and (6) P2 wins in 5 sets.
  • Since it was an even match, the odds for each of those six scenarios ranged between 4.75 and 5.75. After deducting the initial free bet/stake, this would lead me to receive anywhere between $6,750 and $7,600 (guaranteed - since one of those outcomes had to come true).

Given the way free bets work, this is by far the best way I could find to get back the highest guaranteed amount. Big risk though if an player is injured of disqualified.

I still need to turn over that $6,750-$7,600 so I can convert it into cash, but as scooterselwood has said, I can back a heavy favourite like Goodes winning the Sydney votes, or Serena Williams beating a no-name (and cross my fingers).

Your board moderators will contact you about those.

I won the Essendon board tipping. No one has contacted me. Are you sure there is a prize for board comps?
