Defence
A pretty strong area, a couple of superstar keys in McCartin and Andrew. Andrew could be anything, and adds some flexibility as a tall utility - KPD, interceptor, KPF and ruck. Worrell is a player I rate and would love at the Blues - if I remember correctly he dominated an early game against us. He marks everything and can be relied upon to cover CHB if Andrew goes forward. Lloyd adds some experience and leadership, while also being one of the better lockdown small defenders in the league, who can rack up possessions at will. Ash is the rebounding, metres gaining half-back weapon. Roberts played the last 4 games of his debut year, and dominated as an elite kicking/hard running half-back, and I expect he will carry this into 2025.

Midfield
A relatively youthful midfield brigade, however all have proven to be stars at AFL level. Windsor the least experienced having only played one year, however looks at home on the wing with the aim to spend time onball as he gains experience. Callaghan is an inside/outside mid, who has made a name for himself starring on the wing at GWS, using his booming left and agility. Day and Warner are reliable midfield stars for their sides, both with their own weapons that help add a POD to this group. Poor Taranto is toiling away at Richmond, however still in great form. Big bodied inside mid, who adds grunt. McInerney is a solid ruck who gives his midfielders first use.

Forwards
Stengle was the first forward I picked, he's a reliable source of goals and super dangerous around the big sticks - and still has plenty of footy ahead of him. The forward line will ultimately revolve around Georgiades at FF. He took a real step forward last year kicking 44 goals from 20 games. With Dixon and Marshall out for Port, he should continue this form. McStay is a solid CHF who can chop out in the ruck if needed - his main challenge will be avoiding injury. As mentioned Andrew could also swing forward if required, adding another aerial threat. Next to Worrell, Zurhaar is the other player i'd love at Carlton. Has been up and down in his career, however has all the tools to suceed in a De Goey, Petracca, Martin type role. Ultimately he'll play as a third tall, medium forward role with bursts in the midfield. Long has looked fantastic at the GC, and led the comp in 2024 for tackles i50. Prestia adds some experience to the side, and will spend plenty of time in the midfield.

Interchange
Nash is the 198cm Irish inside midfielder, who had a stellar year under Mitchell. Adds some defensive grunt to the midfield, and can also chop out in the ruck if needed. Langford is a tall mid/half-forward who should get games with the Dees this year. Kade Chandler is another pressure forward, with speed and endurance, who posts elite tackle numbers. Nankervis' athleticism helped him carve out a spot in Adelaide's half-back line this year - playing every game from round 4 onwards. Young Zane Duursma is talent and potential at this stage, but could explode as medium forward.

My team overall is full of younger up and coming types. Well balance, however could use an extra experienced gun.

Updated with rationale.

  5. Hugh Bond - Defender
Now for the analysis (Thanks to ChatGPT)

This fantasy team is an absolute powerhouse, and here's why it is primed for success in every aspect of the game:

Defensive Wall

The defensive unit is a rock-solid foundation. We've got Tom McDonald, a versatile key defender who can lock down the opposition’s best forward. Tom Barrass is an absolute beast in the air and can intercept and spoil with the best of them, ensuring no ball gets past him. Wil Powell provides crucial dash off half-back with his elite foot skills and ability to set up attacks.

Then we’ve got the half-back line featuring Darcy Wilmot, a young, electrifying talent with the speed and smarts to break the lines and launch counter-attacks. Jake Kolodjashnij is the reliable, defensive-minded player who reads the play beautifully and excels at nullifying dangerous forwards. And the captain, Nic Newman, is the unsung hero—his leadership, toughness, and ability to control the ball make him a cornerstone of our back half.

Midfield Mavens

The midfield is stacked with dynamic, ball-winning machines. Blake Acres brings an enormous amount of work rate and hard-running, with a keen eye for goal and the ability to influence around the ground. Elliot Yeo is the bull—combining size, strength, and skill to dominate clearances and set up attack. Nic Martin is a future star with elite ball use, and he’ll be racking up possessions and delivering precise passes to your forwards.

But it doesn't stop there. Sean Darcy in the ruck gives us the advantage in the air, and when he’s not tapping it down, he's cleaning up around the ground. His ability to get first use is crucial in ensuring our midfield gets on top. Nick Daicos is the jewel in the crown—his decision-making, skill level, and vision are on another level. He’s the kind of player who can dictate play and make something out of nothing. Ben Keays adds that high pressure and relentless tackling, always putting the opposition midfielders under stress.

Forward Firepower

Our forward line is an absolute nightmare for the opposition. Gryan Miers (VC) is the small forward that terrifies defenders—his speed, agility, and goal sense make him a constant threat. Cooper Sharman provides the aerial threat, and he’s the type of player who can take a massive grab or kick a crucial goal in tight situations. Archie Perkins adds that flair, providing speed and unpredictability, capable of breaking a game open.

And then, you’ve got the power of Mason Wood—a tall, agile forward who can mark the ball anywhere and is a reliable goal kicker. Jake Waterman is tough as nails and a dangerous target up forward, while Callum Ah Chee can do it all—his pace and footy IQ will have defenders on edge all day.

Impact Off the Bench

Our bench options are nothing short of stellar. Matthew Johnson is a midfielder with boundless potential—he's a big-bodied player who can take the game on and provide grunt and creativity when required. Bailey Banfield is versatile, playing as a forward, but also a player who can come in and provide pressure and versatility. Blake Howes is a superb defensive option but can rotate through any position, adding flexibility and depth to our line-up. And Robbie Fox is the ultimate swingman, capable of playing across half-back or forward, giving us another dynamic weapon to exploit.

Finally, Hugh Bond—the defender—can come on as a last-minute solution when needed, adding further defensive strength and balance to the team.

The Ultimate Team:

Every position on this team is packed with skill, versatility, and football IQ. The key pillars like McDonald, Barrass, and Darcy anchor the team, while the midfield is littered with hard nuts and silky ball users in Yeo, Acres, and Daicos. The forward line has plenty of options to kick goals from all areas of the ground, and the bench provides tactical flexibility.

This team has it all: defensive prowess, midfield dominance, and forward potency. The chemistry between players, combined with individual brilliance, will see this team dominate, no matter the opposition. It’s balanced, versatile, and capable of turning the game in an instant.

This is not just a fantasy team; this is an all-star squad ready to rule the league.

I'll critique Itchy Eyeballs team.

1737251228483.png

Backs-
Jeffrey is inconsistent but versatile with his ability to play as a small at either end of the ground... He earned his spot in the AFL team after a strong run of form in the VFL last year... His career highlights to date in his young career include a five goal performance in Ballarat in 2022 and a brilliant performance against the Saints last season recording 29 disposals, 12 marks & 8 f50s. A young star hopefully on the rise... All in all, a solid selection in the 20th round.

Pearce is one of the premier key defenders in the league and Itchy identified this by selecting him with his third pick... He hasn't got many achievements to put on his CV but he's reliable and gets the job done.

Sinn is a run and carry player with a penetrating kick... He hasn't yet established himself but may become a regular in 2025.

Overall it's one of the weaker full back lines in the competition but it's a pass mark... 5/10

Half backs-
Coleman was one of Brisbane's most improved players in 2023 and he quickly established himself as one of the finest ball users across half back in the competition... He will be ready to go from round one this year after spending 12 months on the sidelines recovering from an ACL injury... A round eight selection could look to be a steal and he was certainly a player I was wanting to draft.

SDK didn't live up to the same heights in 2024 as he had done previously and tbh I wasn't sure what to make of his season... While he was more attacking offensively spending more time further up the ground as a support ruckman, his one on one record as a key defender wasn't quite as consistent... He's certainly a player I rated highly in 2022 and 2023 but I'm not prepared to write him off after one inconsistent season... A round five selection was too early.

Maynard is a player I was considering as he has proven to be a good reliable player for several years... A solid mid round selection.

Had it not been for Coleman's injury, this back line would feature three premiership players from the past three seasons. It's a good half back line... 7.5/10

Centres-
Sharp and O'Driscoll were the two players I wanted from Freo to occupy a wing position and I swapped and changed several times as to which one I rated higher... In the end I had Sharp one spot higher on my preference list... It's a pretty good selection and probably a risk worth taking in the 14th round (for comparison I took NOD in the 17th round)... I'm not sure he would have lasted another round especially with his history of performing well against us.

Cerra has been a consistent reliable midfielder since being drafted... Well entrenched in our starting midfield, we get a grandstand view of his work rate and skill... Looking forward to him having an injury free season and returning to his elite 2023 form... Round nine pick was a steal.

Henry is a solid player with class and speed to burn... He probably had an underwhelming debut season for the Saints but he showed enough for Freo to suggest he should be a good reliable player for years to come... Round 13 is a solid selection.

When comparing this centreline with the others, it stacks up OK. 5/10

Half fwds-
JDG is one of the premier fwd/mids in the comp and was another I was considering... Quality round six selection.

Larkey one of the best key forwards in the comp and one we were certainly considering... We rated him fourth for key forwards on our preference list... Quality selection.

Rayner another we wanted... He elevated his game to a new level in 2024 and has now gone past JDG IMO. Gun.

Itchy was able to secure his half forward line with his first six picks... JDG and Rayner going in consecutive picks, nice. 9/10

Fwds-
Baker was one of Richmond's best players which isn't hard to achieve in comparison to other clubs... He is now one of West Coast's best players which also isn't hard to achieve in comparison to other clubs... He didn't come into consideration for me cause he was already selected by the time I would have considered him.

Treacy was taken too early IMO but that's cause I don't rate him as much as others do... He's had one good year, let's see if he can back that up now he will receive more attention... I actually think Amiss is the better fwd and if opposition coaches decide to put their best defender on him, perhaps that will work out well for Treacy... we'll see.

Elliot is one we were considering late... I actually sent ODN a small preference list midweek which included Elliot because I didn't realise he was already taken... Considering he went a few picks before I selected NOD, and I had Elliot one position lower than NOD on my preference list, I personally rate this selection. He won't improve and will probably start to gradually decline but he's still good enough to kick clutch goals.

An above average fwd line... 6/10

Rucks-
Pittonet simply isn't a great ruck... he'll only get games for us if one of our talls like TDK misses through injury / suspension... He's only a back up ruckman so this is a position of weakness for Itchy.

Cripps is an out and out star who doesn't have enough room to hang his 2025 premiership cup and Norm Smith medal to add to his collection... First player picked was reasonable... Not sure how many others would have selected him with pick one in this comp because it all comes down to whether you target a particular position first. It's the age old question whether you target the best player (a mid) or the most important player (key position player who are harder to find).

Pendlebury probably has the best CV of all current players... he's similar to Brent Harvey in the way he is able to impact games despite being in the twilight of his career... For those turned off by the fact he has played 400+ games, you only have to think back to what Brent Harvey did in his final year when he made it to 432 games and many were saying he shouldn't have retired... Folk still say the same thing now after dominating in the Northern Footy League for the past 8 seasons...

This is hard to judge because you have a player who shouldn't be in a starting team, an out and out stud, and a champion of the game past his best but still performing at a high standard. I think a rating of 6.5/10 is far.

Bench-
Bowes, Cincotta, Silvagni, BZT & Cottrell...

I won't give individual summaries but the balance here is good with a couple of talls which includes a swingman who can play at either end. A couple of mids as well as a utility who can play mid/fwd. FWIW, I don't rate BZT at all and I would fancy a lot of state league forwards would embarrass him.I can excuse that tho given he was drafted late on... 5/10

Thanks for the feedback mate….any chance you could bump me up to a 7? 😁

FWIW... Wouldn't it make more sense to do this poll at the end of the year? Isn't the idea to field the strongest possible team for 2025???

How can we know who has the best team before a game has been played??

I was under the impression we critique each other's teams before round one but we won't really know who drafted the strongest team until after the season... That will be determined by a poll.

I’ll jump on the Itchy critique if we perhaps are going to do this chronologically.

There are some quality players in that group, but so many questions for mine. I would rearrange the personnel a little.

Any team with Cripps, Larkey. Pearce, Maynard and the ‘24 revelation Treacy has a solid base.

My queries start with the ‘24 “health” of the list Pearce, De Koning, Coleman, Sinn, Cerra, DeGoey, Silvagni, Cincotta and Cottrell are coming off injury punctuated seasons, with a number returning from LTIs. Not sure if the group is considering the health of the lists, but objectively it is a concern.

Midfield wise Crippa is a massive piece, a fit Cerra is another, Pendles is past his prime, but still a good contributor, De Goey is more mid than forward these days and is under rated due to his off field exploits, Rayner is a highly effective shock trooper, and Bowes is a very solid player off the bench. I see that mix a player short and light on pace and definitely defensive running. Sharp and Henry are athletic and decent wingmen, but both are attacking types with little defensive intent. Cincotta could add to defensive intent, but is not a frontline or even regular mid. Pitto is a solid battler in the ruck, but will be relying on pinch hitters for a chop out unless SDK is repurposed (have the feeling the Cats plan to)

There is quality in the forward line, Larkey, Treacy, Elliot and Rayner regular goalkickers. de Goey has reduced his scoreboard impact of late for mine. Baker is the only “pressure” player in that front half and it is almost devoid of crumbing ability, with Elliot playing more a lead up mid sizes role than his small stature.

Defensively Jeffrey and Sinn are more rebound types than lock down. I would have Maynard back in a pocket and start Zerk Thatcher. Pearce is an under rated key defender and would be a priceless pillar if he stays fit. A tall trio of Pearce, SDK and Zerk-Thatcher I see as perhaps the biggest strength of the squad. While his pressure would be handy forward, I see Baker better behind the ball or as a defensive wing type. A fit Coleman is a star of the game as a distributing rebounder and a big positive.

There are some big positives, but I question the balance of the squad. Loving the key position options and plenty of grunt and leadership. Thinking I would return Jeffrey to a forward role where he started his career. Not sure I see a dedicated role for JSOS with three key defenders and bulls Rayner and De Goey slated in the forward mix with Larkey and Treacy?

Call it as I see it if we are being honest in our assessments.

Well, that's what I did anyway.

I picked my side on all players at peak fitness and form to perform for one game, the GF.
Hence selections like Elliot, Coleman, SDK…I disregarded their recent injury woes.
Just one good game out of them.
As the criteria wasn’t clear beforehand, that was mine.

Doesn't matter anyway.

In my opinion, it is a popularity contest at the end of the day. Teams are not being voted on by which team is the best team, but who their favourite selector is.

I think every single side has holes, whether it's quality, positional integrity, balance, etc

Its no surprise really, given we had 1 pick evey 18. Would every single recruiter nail a great team under a similar format? I doubt it

My 2 Key forwards have spent time in the forward half, but are now defenders. I could have taken Ollie Lord, but I felt someone like a Himmelberg would have better output

I had plenty of laughs, great fun

I sort of feel funny critiquing others posters sides, when tbh, a lot of them have players I’ve never even heard of.
I tend to focus on us (Blues) and other stars/established players in the comp.
Picking a side to win on GF day, or as the best over a season, or for sustained success over a number of years are all completely different scenarios.
I’ve enjoyed this immensely and can’t wait for the 2nd season edition.

Out of interest, how many of mine haven't you heard of? And who? :tearsofjoy:

Howes, Johnson and Bond
That’s not a comment on your selection or their ability…. more my lack of knowledge

Got it. Fair enough.

Johnson played 19 matches last season, so I'd say you probably seen him at some point. Howes at 16 matches is probably the same.

Understand not having knowledge of Bond though with the 7 matches... He was great when I saw him. Did everything you'd want a defender to, so cannot complain there :)

Imo next season we should just try to draft the best team to win on GF day, or the best AA team. Have a really specific goal.

I'm listening...

We're coming for him in the off season! Be ready!!! :tonguewink::tonguewink:

I think drafting the best team overall for the season is better. GF day is just 1 day in the whole season, and to make it there, you need a consistent team throughout the season. Idk though hmm.
