I note down prospective names all throughout the year. It tends to be people who have announced they are unwell, but it can also be older people who just enter my mind for some reason. I have the list on the notes app on my tablet.

It's usually pretty easy for me to get down to around 25 names, then it's gets more difficult to get it down further. Outside of the list of 20 I also have ~30 noted below that are progressively added/removed from.

I've keep my initial list which is rolled over to the next year - I strikeout those who die during the year for removal come Dec (I'm always curious how many who don't make my final 20 that die), while I keep track of new names that come to mind during the year for the reasons you said, or who come to attention during Dec research

My full list is usually around 80 -> 90 names most of which are just older folk, I cut it down to about 40 and then get serious with trying to get to 20

Last years uniques Ron Jeremy and Akebono Taro are on my list again, though have now been adopted by others.
