Round 1 scores and a ladder of sorts..

Good work B&W Army!

It was a high scoring round and it seems that we all did ok. I haven't checked any other leagues to see how we compare.

Yeah not a bad avg for the league, not one person was under 1900 which is great. We should be up with some of the best leagues this year and there will be some great competition!

The question I am pondering this week is do I trade out injured players or out of form players?

Currently I have 4 injured players - Raines, B Ottens, Hentschel & L Anthony. All four have been listed as 4 week injuries although I suspect that Hentschel & Anthony will be out for longer. I have cover for all four players (fortunately there is one from each position) so should not cop any zeros yet.

I currently have 2 players badly out of form - Lucas & Adcock. Lucas was always a gamble but I was hoping for a return somewhere closer to his 2005/6/7 form (ave ~100) rather than his current return of 67 & 36. Adcock has been a real disappointment. Pre-season games showed that the Lions would play a higher possession game under Voss but this change in gameplan hasn't resulted in higher SC scores for Adcock. And 2 other players - Reilly & Grundy that I hoped for a better return from (in truth I was going to change Grundy before the R1 lockout but was unable to).

Looking long term I thought my ruck combo of Cox & Ottens would be the 2 best rucks of 2009. I still believe this and have Jacobs to cover for Ottens for the 4 weeks.

Hentschel was always a risk and it backfired early. He can be replaced later with a rookie - say B Dick, D Daniher, Hogan or Schoenmakers after R3. Similarly Anthony can be traded out later for either Beams, Zaharakis, or G Moss. I can cover Hentschel with Ziebell & leave Anthony on the pine.

Raines I still believe will be good value & I have Petrenko covering for him atm.

Option A - Out: Lucas & Adcock. In: L Davis & Cheney +$137.9k (to the kitty) & await Raines return.
Option B - Out: Lucas & Adcock. In: S Johnson + Hurn -$12.6k
Option C - Out: Lucas & Hentschel. In: S Johnson & Garlett -$12.7k
Option D - Out: Reilly & Adcock. In: Rich & J Waite +$80.3k
Option E - Out: Lucas & Reilly. In: Rich & L Davis +$27.4k

Any opinions?

Tough situation you're in and I'm probably not the best to answer this as I am taking a different strategy (ie. nio sideways trades).

But in saying that I made a couple of similar trades last year that worked very well.

I traded out Stanton (507k) for Cooney (484k) and Embley (approx 430k from memory) for J McVeigh (332k).

Also traded out Aker for Roughead with mixed results on that one.

Looking at the options you have provided, I think all of them are somewhat risky as they all involve downgrading a player you thought may potentially have been a keeper to a player you are going to likely have to upgrade later on anyway, so in essence you will be using three trades here (including the one for the upgrade down the track).

Are there any Lucas / Adcock trade options that you could think of that would give you two potential keepers?

That's a more sensible approach but I give myself a pass from that after R2 and due to injuries (somewhat conveniently).

Option B - Out: Lucas & Adcock. In: S Johnson + Hurn -$12.6k probably fulfils your suggestion. Both these players are interesting prospects.

Hurn is a booming kick which always helps as (IIRC) kicks over 40m in SC are always counted as effective. He is spending 95% TOG & appears to have been give a licence to run from HBF, receive the ball and kick long. He is injury prone though. I doubt he'll maintain his current ave of 97.5 but will probably ave ~80 which is all I really expected from Raines. Hurn has a current BE of -25 so will raise in vaalue and again fulfil the role I expected of Raines.

SJ is a freak that can score massively as he did in R22 last year (173) but can be tagged out of games as well (5 scores <70 in 2008). His TOG is 90% & I think the Cats will be hungrier this season and haven't hit top gear yet so he still has some upside.

The risk of this is that my backline becomes H Shaw, Chad, Drummond, Hurn, Grundy, Houlihan, Petrenko with S Hill & Raines on the bench. Drummond, Hurn & Raines are all injury prone & Hill is likely to be dropped - probably this week.

Option F - Out: Raines & Lucas. In: Hurn & R Gray -$2k is basically swapping like for like in that I'd expect ~80 from both players as I did from Raines & Lucas but again both Hurn & Gray are injury prone. Pity I didn't just select Rich at the start instead of Reilly!

What you've provided above about Option B makes sense. If Hurn is able to average around 80 and play all or most of the games for the season then he would be handy to have as that no 6 or 7 defender for the year and therefore giving you a keeper.

As you mention he has a booming kick which gives him the capability to score more points. From what I've read a long kick is an effective kick if it goes to a contest that is rated 50/50 or better - if the long kick lands straight on the chest of an opponent it is a clanger but if it goes to a 50/50 contest and ends up in a turnover it is still an effective kick.

And Steve Johnson definitely looks to be a keeper. Sure he will have his ups and downs, but which forward doesn't? At the moment he looks like he could increase his season average by 10 points or more which would be a great pick-up at 471k.

My thoughts on Raines are to hold on to him for the time being and then wait until around Rd 14-15 and by then hopefully he has risen to around 350k-375k and then use him as a last upgrade.

Well after pondering over last weeks trades I finally made my decision with about 100 seconds to spare. I kept faith in Adcock & Lucas and they repaid me with 144 & 80 points respectively.

I decided that carrying 4 injured players was too big a risk and traded Raines for Hurn. This was based on my reasoning that it was a sideways trade with similar risk/reward. Ironically Hurn (61) scored worse than Petrenko (75) who would have played as my 7th back if I had not traded.

I also traded Reilly who has been playing below my expectations (I'm a Crows fan) and bought Rich who is this years J Selwood (07) or R Palmer (08). Rich scored 112 so I was happy with that & should have had him from the beginning.

Now this week I have to decide whether it is worth hanging on to H Shaw? He is my most expensive back at $492.9k and has only contributed 122 pts and will miss R4 as well. It was also mentioned that he had reinjured his back which kept him out of R1 although I'm yet to confirm this.

I still have Hentschel & Anthony rotting on the pine and I have question marks over both of their abilities to break into the 22 again before R8. Anthony could be a straight swap for either Beams or Zaharakis (leaning towards Beams) & Hentschel for D Daniher would net a profit of $76.7k.

Thus possible trades for week 3:
Option A - Out: Shaw, Hentschel. In: Gilbert, Daniher +$196.4k
Option B - Out: Shaw, Hentschel. In: Newman, Daniher. +$30.3k
Option C - Out: Shaw, Hentschel. In: Goddard, Daniher. -$10.2k
Option D - Out: Hentschel. In: Daniher. Next week - Out: H Shaw. In: J Waite BE 129/Gilbee BE 130/S Fisher BE 105 depending upon form.

Sorry it took me a while, I'm actually on holidays and so I'm all outta wack :p

Well done to shiva25 with the highest score for the week 2498 just beating bubba_5 (2497) by the narrowest of margins. We had a few scores over 2400 with honourable mentions to the-X-factor (2466), B&W Army (2452) and PROF! (2451).

Thus possible trades for week 3:
Option A - Out: Shaw, Hentschel. In: Gilbert, Daniher +$196.4k
Option B - Out: Shaw, Hentschel. In: Newman, Daniher. +$30.3k

Option D - Out: Hentschel. In: Daniher. Next week - Out: H Shaw. In: J Waite BE 129/Gilbee BE 130/S Fisher BE 105 depending upon form.

If you have cover from your bench for Shaw, then I'd go for Option D.

I've made one trade so far and it was Hentschel out for Krakouer so I hope that helps your selection process. :thumbsu:
