Bigfooty, which has a general chat site as well as chat rooms for the clubs' supporters, has 33,200 registered users. Many thousands more visit as guests.

The biggest day, according to Appleyard, is at the close of trading in October. Just last year, as the clubs wound up their trading, there were 3500 bigfooty members on the site and another 2000 guests, and the server could not provide access for who knows how many others. "The server couldn't handle it," said one of bigfooty's moderators. "It happens every year."

According to Appleyard, a 33-year-old information technology consultant who lives in Brisbane, between 100,000 and 150,000 people visit bigfooty every month. "I thought it'd be a bit of a hobby, a bit of fun. But it just about doubles every year."

Appleyard spends a couple of hours each night managing bigfooty and has assembled 40 voluntary moderators to help him. He had run a footy tipping site before that. Now bigfooty has cricket and rugby league forums attached, it runs social days and a dream team competition.

Hard-core fans, of course, need more specific information and you will find them not only on bigfooty but on the various club sites, such as Puntroadend.com (Richmond), Saintsational (St Kilda) and Nick's Bulletin board (Collingwood). Most of the club boards have training reports from "spies". At the Kangaroos' site, a poster called The Coach does amazingly detailed analysis with match-ups and predictions, as well as reviews of games.

A lot of what is written on these sites is mindless twaddle

If he thinks BigFooty is mindless twaddle, he should try reading some of Caroline Wilson's articles. :)

Re: Interesting article on Bigfooty ect...

Pretty fair coverage of the topic, bar one thing. There are a number of confirmed cases of journalists using BF and other forums for tips and as sources, both in genuine and fraudulent stories. (Ricky Mott, anyone?) Fan forums have greatest leverage when this happens, because the readership/viewership of the mainstream media outlets still dwarfs even BF. So why not mention this topic at all? The laziness of many journos ain't exactly a state secret.

Re: Interesting article on Bigfooty ect...

I actually saw a little thing in MX...the quality newspaper...that mentioned BigFooty. I ripped it out but haven't been bothered to scan it in and upload it yet.

Re: Interesting article on Bigfooty ect...

great article how the face of footy is changing....in the old days mates would meet at the local for a beer and chat about the footy and some still do I suspect....but footy chat in cyberspace is fun, free of sorts and its growing all the time

At least now the punch ups are just verbal battles, which saves everyone pain and bruises and broken bones.

Re: Interesting article on Bigfooty ect...

I like the article, and obviously love our respective forums however...

I wish that newspapers would stop making it out as if it is all newage and exclusive stuff. Like The Pulse section of the HS. Let's quote the fansites, great idea to fill in space... Not a fan of that idea.

"Unofficial Hawthorn fansite....St Kilda bloggers have posted that..." Better to find your own material.

Maybe they are running out of ideas?

Re: Interesting article on Bigfooty ect...

I reckon this thread should be stickied for a few days. The choice of Subject Title is poor. Something like "BigFooty featured on The Age website" would have been better.

And how did Martin Blake manage to say

"The AFL's own website, afl.com.au, is by far the most popular football website on the internet."

and fail to mention how crap it is?

Re: Interesting article on Bigfooty ect...

Expect a new wave of supporters joining up in the next few days, which means new trolls and new spats and new threads that have been discussed 100 times already.

Great.

Finally something all Carlton supporters can agree with JD on!

True now its all about misfits who cant make friends nothing to brag about.

Re: Big footy's claim to....

am surprised no mention of Craig C posting on demonland after every draft

I think that's a good point.

Club forums are not only a place where fans can have their opinion.

The two Melbourne sites, Demonland and Demonology sponsor a player each year, like other club forums do.

Both sites have also been used to recruit volunteers come the pre-season membership drive.

Yeah, there are a few half baked opinions, but they also do have a positive role to play as well.

Re: Big footy's claim to....

"The AFL's own website, afl.com.au, is by far the most popular football website on the internet."

Not from what you read around the other places. Speaking for myself, I always visit BigFooty/CFC.com.au/NicksBB/any other fansite for footy news and rumours. Rarely AFL.com.au
