Got the Japanese cd which includes Assassin's first two albums. Been after it for a while as have both on vinyl but wanted them on cd. Also ordered some cds from Finland before (White Death mcd, Sargeist 'Let...', Goatmoon/RFR and new Fatherland). Should be a laugh a minute when they turn up.

Finnish overload. Keen to know what that Fatherland is like. I've got some early Sargeist and went off them a bit but Satanic Black Devotion is one of my favourite black metal albums.

Keyboards in black metal are great as long as they aren't over done. This is over 10 years old from my Emperor worshipping days. Keys are a little more basic in this tune because the keyboardist programmed them like he played them live. Where as in the other tunes he went to town on them and we didn't know until the last day of recording when he brought them into the studio. One of the guys got in contact with me not long ago that some French label was looking to re-release this album and the guys were trying to find the original tracks from 2005 to strip the keys back. No luck. We entertained re-recording it even though we're all in different states (QLD, Vic and Tas) but I can't hit that vocal range anymore.

Heath from Astriaal is a true champion though. He did some vocals on this track and he can still do those highs.

Good stuff :thumbsu:

Had Marduk's 'Frontschwein' ' on repeat all week. Fast becoming my fav of their discography. Anyone else rank this up there as highly as I do or am I the odd one out? James - you'll be all over this I imagine?

I didn't mind it after I tried it again. It was a one and done at first for me, didn't think much of it and moved on from it until some time later I gave it another go.

Enjoy it. Not sure where I place it.

Pineapple serves only two purposes in life - 1) fruit salad participant and 2) a cocktail garnish.

I love it. Not my favourite of theirs, but it sits very comfortably alongside their classics. It was actually the last new release I've genuinely been excited for.

Nebelwerfer is my favourite track. When I was youtubing the album prior to release, it was a massive disappointment, but as soon as I got the physical copy and could place it in its proper context it grew on me, and is now one of my favourite Marduk songs.

My death metal knowledge sucks. Would appreciate a crash course and a recommendation of some of the essential listens of the genre. Anyone? :p

Got Dodecahedron's new album on right now, really, really good.

I'd recommend the following albums. Some not considered the band's best, but these are the ones which I have listened to since release (save for Death - SBS/Leprosy, Autopsy - SS and Pestilence - CI) and still listen to.

Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Deicide - S/T
Death - SBG/Leprosy/Spiritual Healing
Carcass - SOS/NDTI
Pungent Stench - FGYSFMYF/BCB
Autopsy - SS/MF
Darkthrone - SJ
Morbid Angel - AOM
Suffocation - HW/EOTF
Obituary - SWR/COD
Monstrosity - ID
Malevolent Creation - TTC/R
Therion - OD
Grave - ITG/G
Unleashed - WNLD
Entombed - LHP
Carnage - DR
Bolt Thrower - WM
Macabre - G/SS
Immolation - DOP
Incantation - OTG
Pestilence - CI
Cannibal Corpse - TOTM/TB

My favourites from those albums are probably -

Dismember - LAEFS
Obituary - COD
Darkthrone - SJ
Death - SH
Autopsy - MF
Carcass - NDTI
Decide - S/T
Macabre - SS
Pungent Stench - FGYSFMYF

Later day "brutal" death metal wise I really like Deranged (Plainfield Cemetery), Gorgasm (Masticate to Dominate), Disgorge (POIT) and Defeated Sanity (POTM). I also really like Severe Torture/Centurian/Nox. Probably missed some acts but this will get you going.

Devo's list is pretty comprehensive but just would like to add a few as it's pretty subjective:

Possessed - Seven Churches
Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum
Protector - Misanthropy
Vader - De Profundis
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos

Not a big fan of the more modern style death metal but would like to add Deeds of a Flesh - Mark of the Legion. In no way 'essential' but just really like that album.

Good them all. All good albums. Mark of the Legion and Reduced to Ashes probably my favourite DOF.

This is so killer. Would love to see these guys in Australia. Mantas and Abaddon have such a legendary aura about them and Tony is a pretty awesome frontman too.
