You can, but the trading period refers to trading your allocated Pokemon with other competitors. For example, say you get Blastoise and Vaporeon, and somebody else gets Charizard and Flareon. You might agree to trade your Vaporeon for their Flareon in order to even up both teams and give them more coverage.
