BigFooty summer comp - to find the best team, according to BigFooty posters, of the modern era.

Group 1
West Coast 1994 (16-6, 132.2%) vs Essendon 1999 (18-4, 126.0%)
The Eagles were a super strong, finals-hardened team in 1994. One of those teams whose 16-6 W/L record does not do them justice. They bided their time for most of the year. They had top spot and home finals sewn up after Rd 19 before losing 2 meaningless away games. Essendon were an improving team in 1999, but they lacked mental toughness, as shown when they choked in the Prelim Final.

Group 2
Essendon 2000 (21-1, 159.1%) vs Hawthorn 1987 (17-5, 147.1%)
Leaving myself wide-open to ridicule here... :D It probably doesn't matter, because everyone will select Essendon anyway, but no team is unbeatable as the Bulldogs proved in Rd 21, 2000. The Bombers cruised their way through the season, suffered no injuries, rested players and were rarely tested by any quality opposition. They were a great team but they beat nobody. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Hawthorn of '87 played some of the best football of their 80's dynasty. Injuries prevented them from equalling Collingwood's record of 4 flags in succession. The OP said we should rate the teams at their best, so I've ignored their disappointing September.

Group 3
Carlton 1987 (18-4, 138.0%) vs Adelaide 2005 (17-5, 136.5%)
The Crowbots of '05 were one of the unluckier teams not win a premiership. Like Hawthorn in '87, they dominated the best part of the season, but came unglued with crucial injuries in September. Carlton were a strong team in '87 with a few stars, but I preferred Adelaide's overall depth of talent. Their bottom 6 players were better than Carlton's.

Group 4
Adelaide 1998 (13-9, 123.2%) vs Sydney 1996 (16-5-1, 123.9%)
The Swans kept 18 men back in defense for the majority of 1996 and pinched top spot on the ladder. They proceeded to arse their way through September with two last-gasp wins against mediocre opposition (Hawthorn and Essendon) before getting thumped by North in the GF. Adelaide were a quality side when they got going and achieved back-to-back flags, comfortably defeating all Top 3 teams away from home in the 3 most important games of their season. No contest. Crows easy...

Group 5
Essendon 1993 (13-6-1, 119.1) vs Port Adel 2003 (18-4, 127.2%)
The Baby Bombers were possibly the weakest premiership team in living memory, but they could play some inspired football on the big occasions. Port were a great football team, but unfortunaterly for them, they choked in the big games.

Group 6
Hawthorn 1989 (19-3, 153.2%) vs Port Adel 2002 (18-4, 132.4%)
Probably a closer game than many people would think. Both teams were highly skilled, full of run, with some tough men in the midfield. Port were on the up with many good days ahead of them, but Hawthorn would prove too experienced, too intimidating and too good.

Hawthorn 2008's W/L record was 20-5, 136.7% (Geelong 23-2)
West Coast 2006's W/L record was 20-6, 121.6% (Sydney 16-9)

Biased West Coast fans aside, what possible justification could neutral people have for selecting the Eagles?

Was the game played at Subiaco instead of the MCG?

I think many people are instinctively biased to the performances of teams in OTHER years.

For example, if Hawthorn had won the flag in 2009 and 2010, people would be claiming how super they were by winning 3 consecutive flags. And I'm almost certain that the 2008 Hawks would have been favoured by BigFooty posters over the 2006 Eagles if the Hawks had won in 2009 and 2010.

But because Hawthorn performed poorly in 2009 and 2010 people tend to mark down their 2008 side (unfairly so, I would argue), even though I would personally rate that 2008 side, as far, far better than what people give them credit for. They were hungy, talented, Franklin was at his best. I'd personally pick them over West Coast 2006.

With this tournament the way it's set-up with so many teams, there are always going to be some teams that in retrospect appear overrated, and some that are underrated. Based on what they did in 2008, I think Hawthorn of that year, in retropsect, may be underrated.

It's funny how often people will try to claim this team or that midfield or this full back is the "greatest of all time". During 2004, those people who were prone to making BIG STATEMENTS said Brisbane's Fab Four were the cornerstones of the greatest midfield we'd ever seen.

Then along came the West Coast Eagles in 2005 with Juddy, Cuzzy, Kerr, Big Cox and a non-existent forward line. Various Jizzers said it was the greatest midfield we'd ever seen. Possibly a valid claim...

Fast forward a couple of years and Geelong have a similarly great midfield, perhaps even better than West Coast's with Ablett, Bartel, Selwood, Ling, Corey, Kelly and Chapman running rings around the AFL.

Geelong had a slight edge over Hawthorn in the midfield department, but they were never able to dominate against us like they did against the rest of the competition. What makes you think your 2006 Eagles could do what the 2008 Cats could not? The Hawthorn midfielders were tough, hard, good tacklers and could bottle things up against Geelong, just like the Sydney Swans used to do to West Coast.

Campbell was very good at getting stuck in and breaking even with higher rated opponents. He'd probably lose the tap, but outhustle Cox once the ball hit the ground. Nobody rated the Hawthorn ruckmen on paper in 2008, but it was never really an issue...

Geelong had an even better group of defenders than West Coast with All Australians: Scarlett, Milburn, Harley and Enright. Hawthorn was still able to kick 18 goals against them in the 2008 Grand Final.

Q. How often did West Coast manage to kick 18 goals in 2006?
A. Just 4 times in 26 games (twice against Richmond)

2007 - just 5 times in 24 games
2005 - just 5 times in 25 games

Quinten Lynch
Ashley Hansen
Brent Staker
Andrew Embley
Steven Armstrong

Buddy Franklin
Jarryd Roughead
Mark Williams
Stuart Dew
Michael Osborne
Cyril Rioli

It's not hard to figure out whose forward line would kick the bigger score in a tight game...

27/03/2005 - West Coast 9.10.64 - Adelaide 7.11.53
27/08/2005 - West Coast 10.14.74 - Adelaide 12.10.82
17/09/2005 - West Coast 14.09.93 - Adelaide 11.11.77
09/04/2006 - West Coast 13.12.90 - Adelaide 13.10.88
29/07/2006 - West Coast 26.9.165 - Adelaide 12.11.83
23/09/2006 - West Coast 11.19.85 - Adelaide 11.9.75
01/07/2007 - West Coast 14.11.95 - Adelaide 10.14.74

As we can see from the scores above, West Coast was only able to "smash" Adelaide's zone defence on ONE occasion out of seven. Coincidently this was a game which Adelaide's All-Australian half backs, Bock and McLeod missed because of injury.

Adelaide played a more rudimentary zone defence from 2005-2007 than Hawthorn's complex schemes in 2008. Clarkson borrowed from Craig but evolved it even further. He also adapted the game plan to suit the opposition. The Hawks would play hybrid zones, full-on 18 man zones then switch to man-on-man defence, all within the one game.

-----------------------

Interesting that 15 of 18 people would select West Coast '06 over Hawthorn '08. That's nearly 90% if you discount my vote. Both teams had the same number of wins during the home and away season, but the Hawks had the far greater percentage. West Coast lost a home final to Sydney, Hawthorn went unbeaten during September.

People said that Hawthorn got lucky in 2008, but in actual fact they absorbed everything Geelong could throw at them and won comfortably in the end by 26 points. West Coast fell across the finish line in their Grand Final, winning by 1 point over the Sydney Swans. I reckon it was those Eagles who were lucky to win, not Hawthorn...

Hawthorn 2008's W/L record was 20-5,136.7% (Geelong 23-2)
West Coast 2006's W/L record was 20-6,121.6% (Sydney 16-9)

Based on what they did in 2008, I think Hawthorn of that year, in retropsect, may be underrated.

There sure aren't the only ones! North's 90's team that went to 7 straight prelims are being massively underrated. Or perhaps we are just being punished because arguably '98 was our best team of the 3 (96, 98, 99) and they aren't included in this thread.

Hahaha, great response. You nearly got me in. :D:thumbsu: There's enough truth in your post to have me nodding with agreement, but it's all underscored by the same self-serving twisted logic of your "Yay For Essendon 2000" threads. You've decided that a "team" only lasts until the end of the season. I think the "team" operates in continuity from one season to the next.

Please allow me to make some slight corrections...

Hawthorn has been continously underrated since they got their shit together in 2007 and they continue to be underrated, even to this day.

Hawthorn was underrated in 2008 because people only had eyes for Geelong. People operate under the erroneous belief that in any given AFL season there is one legitimate champion team. Geelong were great and everyone else was shit by comparison.

People gave Hawthorn very little credit DURING the 2008 season. Most people thought they were pretenders who would fall on their arses come September. The experts thought our game would be exposed under finals pressure: we were too reliant on precision field kicking and our defensive zones were too passive, with not enough numbers to each contest. Our "weak" backline was protected by the zone, our midfield was too slow and our rucks were crap. The common view was that Franklin and Roughead would waste too many easy scoring chances and cost us victory against the good teams. All of these charges were emphatically disproved in September '08.

Most people laughed at us here on BigFooty for thinking the Hawks could even compete with Geelong. "We should hand the Cats the cup NOW!" was the typical attitude, as far back as July '08...

People continued to underrate the Hawks, even after they stormed through the finals. The common view held that Hawthorn did not win it, but Geelong "lost" it, the Cats kicked themselves out of it. Never mind that Hawthorn deliberately rushed 10 behinds and inflated the Cats' final tally of 23. Never mind that Hawthorn ran over Geelong in the 2nd half and outscored them 10 goals to 5. Never mind that more than half the Hawthorn premiership team were carrying various ailments which required post-season surgery.

Hawthorn overcame a number of injuries in 2008 and would've won more than 17 H&A games if they'd had a clear run. People don't realise that. The team won their first 9 games then limped their way through the next couple of months before getting things back on track in August.

The grind of 2008 caught up with them however. The 2009 pre-season was a shocker with many players still re-habbing from surgeries and those who attended got injured. We endured an horrific run throughout 2009. The worst I can ever remember. Our season never got off the ground. But according to all the knockers, our poor showing in '09 was "proof" that we'd fluked our way to premiership in '08.

Things looked better for us prior to the 2010 season, but then the injury curse struck again. We fielded half a team in the early part of the year. We had one fit ruckman on our list from March-April. Luke Hodge was our 1st ruck in our loss to North! By now, people were sick and tired about our injuries. Never mind if it was true. We were just making excuses. Never mind that Hawthorn posted a W/L record of 11-3-1 over the final 14 rounds of H&A. Never mind that 2 of our best players (Hodge and Rioli) were injured and played zero part in our inglorious finals exit over at Subiaco.

The only thing people would now say about Hawthorn was that we finished 7th and we were probably overrated, no longer a threat to the good teams. Well, here's the results from our most recent games versus the top 4 teams from 2010

02/07/2010 - W - Hawthorn 12.7.79 - W Bulldogs 11.10.76
10/07/2010 - L - Hawthorn 11.17.83 - Geelong 12.13.85
23/07/2010 - D - Hawthorn 13.9.87 - St Kilda 14.3.87
28/08/2010 - W - Hawthorn 15.8.98 - Collingwood 13.17.95

So I reject your oblique view that people underrate Hawthorn '08 but they don't underrate Hawthorn 2009-2010. Luck with injuries is a part of football. Hoping you avoid them, or if they occur, hoping they befall your main rivals. Essendon had one decent rival in 2000, but unfortunately for Carlton, their Superman Kouta got injured and they were only 70% as good without him. Geelong also had a decent rival in 2008, one who struck their best form in September. I think Geelong of 2008 was even better than Essendon of 2000, but they got one or two injury niggles and had the misfortune to run into some top quality opposition.

Harley getting ko'd when he did was absolutely critical, and very undermentioned. We had Bartel also ko'd and ineffective, and passenger Stokes letting Hodge do as he pleased.

Not sure about that. Our troubles that day were all at the other end of the ground. Lonergan was crap, Varcoe was useless, and Thompson's pet Stokes was beyond pathetic (don't even start the "but he was injured" garbage, he said he was fit to play). The one forward who was getting the ball in Mooney couldn't kick straight.

For all the various reasons and theories put forward for that game, the most accurate is rarely discussed. Hawthorn took their chances, Geelong didn't. Simple as that.

Although I reject the notion of "One season, one team" I'll continue to play along because I'm a good sport...

Group 1
Geelong 2007 (18-4, 152.8%)
vs Essendon 1999 (18-4, 126.0%)
Both clubs had a similar march towards September with improved play and raised expectations as the year progressed, but the Cats definitely had more momentum and scored more heavily. How could Misiti, Blumfield, Heffernan, M Johnson and J Johnson stop the Geelong midfielders? They'd be out of puff at 3/4 time after trying to catch little Gazza all arvo.

Group 2
Adelaide 1997 (13-9, 121.6%) vs Hawthorn 1987 (17-5, 147.1%)
Tony Modra kicks 6 goals on Langford, but his presence in the goal square robs the Crows of vital scoring options (Jarman and Ellen) which they profited from once he got injured in '97. Which raises the question of who would win if the '97 Crows played the '91 Hawks? Who would Darren Jarman play for? Would he feel a slight conflict of interest if he lined up for both teams?

Group 3
Brisbane 2002 (17-5, 136.7%)
vs Adelaide 2005 (17-5, 136.5%)
Mal Michael stands at the top of the goal square like Gandalf and says to ugly Adelaide Orcs, "None shall pass!" Akermanis vs McLeod is a great duel, but Aka kicks 5 goals.

Group 4
Port.Adel 2004 (17-5, 132.4%) vs Sydney 1996 (16-5-1, 123.9%)
After Sydney win the coin flip and get to play by 1996 rules with 1996 umpires, Byron Pickett knocks out Wade Chapman, Brad Seymour, Troy Luff, Simon Garlick, Kevin Dyson and Craig O'Brien with a brutal succession of bumps. Rocket Eade places their comatose bodies in defence, but the flood is not as effective as usual. Port by 10 goals.

Group 5
West Coast 1992 (15-6-1, 125.9%) vs Port Adel 2003 (18-4, 127.2%)
Jakovich vs Tredrea would be a good duel, but guys like McKenna, Worsfold, Brennan, McIntosh, Waterman, White and Hart formed a great backline and would overwhelm the Port forwards. The Eagles of the early 90's had a better finals record than the 'home & away' kings of Alberton.
