Well I don't know his actual situation, but personally if he is in obvious discomfort than he should back off from activity for longer would be my opinion (as a minimum), I would say why risk a career for a few extra weeks. But obviously the medical team who have examined him think he is okay to go.
more a performance risk than a career risk IMO

What was Ken's quote about playing injured players in the finals last year?

'If you thought those injured players performed badly, you should have seen the other options we had'
Yeah, but they had poor depth. ;)

We had options.

I know the Crouch on a wing experiment of a couple years back was pretty ugly. But if Crouch has truly changed his game to suit our current attacking and fast game style, I reckon he could rest on the wing for short periods with success

no no no no

Crouch has zero traits as a wingman

Yeah, we now have many players that have positional flexibility. But Matt Crouch is not one of them.

The good news is he is VERY good at being the guy who gets the footy first. We just need to never surround him with explosive and or super classy players, and not other slow midfielders who play exactly like him. We've seen that, and it doesn't work.

Also good news, we now have those types of explosive/classy players who we can surround him with to make the most of Matt's talents.

Report later in day for further detail but Curtin no show after looking proppy in training on Monday

Laird in orange fluoro hat. So is Ned

Sloane and Keane in rehab group
Feel like Curtin might need a short stint in the rehab group to fully recover that Knee. No point pushing a big kid like that to breaking point in his first season IMO. We want him 100% when he goes against AFL competition, not labouring.

The AFL is hard enough

Can’t see Curtin playing round 1

A Charlie Edwards debut wouldn’t totally surprise me but he’d have to play against eagles this week first

Burgo is known for wanting players through certain injuries when possible. Making him play an unimportant practice game in some degree of discomfort and then resting him sounds like something that makes some sense.
Pretty much the same thing for all teams.

These guys are paid to get players out on the park which sometimes isn't the best result for the individuals, other times it works out alright.

Mad theorising: it was bad enough to give him a little bit of grief, but not a risk of getting much worse. They thought it was most important for him to do as normal a pre-season as possible to settle him in and show him what AFL life is like. Now they’ll give him a spell to get it properly fixed.

Thats all well and good for an experienced player but you don't take any risks with a kid with an injured knee.

Is Charlie Edwards the type of player we could start off in the forward line or in defence and transition into the midfield? Or is he a midfield only type player? If he is midfield only I can't see them pushing him in front of anyone else currently in the midfield group.

We don't know the player yet either. Can he push through an injury? Can he play with a niggle? What is his threshold?

I'd probably err on the side of caution with a first year player taken early myself but who am I to judge

As mentioned before curtin didn’t participate in training although I’m pretty sure I saw him venture outside for a look at match sim. Can’t say it’s overly surprising as he looked quite sore on Monday. Will be interesting to see how we go about managing him - you’d think he misses this weekend at the very least. I suspect he may need some decent time off, but I’m no doctor.

Both pedlar and hamill appeared to leave the track a bit early, not sure if there’s anything wrong there but worth noting anyway. Laird also trained but with a fluro hat so must still be a bit sore. He moved quite well though so should still see minutes on Saturday you would think. Ned also wore a fluro hat but ditched it during match sim so not sure if he just likes the hat.

Otherwise the list is in a pretty healthy state. Milera, soligo and butts did full training. Sloane did bits and pieces but not the match sim. Same goes for murray and schoenberg, the latter of which is now doing a fair chunk of training with the main group which is good to see. Understandably he’s not moving at 100 per cent but great signs nonetheless. Keane ran laps and appears fine.

Match sim teams were as follows:

Blue - Jones, Keays, Berry, Crouch, Thilthorpe, Rachele, Dawson, Walker, Michalanney, Hinge, Rankine, Worrell, Laird, Milera, Fogarty, Smith, Borlase, Sholl, O’Brien

White - Murphy, Pedlar, Edwards, Soligo, Cook, Hamill, Taylor, Burgess, Ryan, McHenry, Nankervis, Dowling, Himmelberg, Gallagher, Parnell, Toby Murray, Bond, Butts, Welsh, Gollant, Strachan, Madgen

So a little bit to take away from that: Sholl continues to press for round one. Pedlar was once again relegated to the B team, as was murphy, so hard to know what to make of that. Hamill has dropped back with milera available. And berry looks to still be in the mix as does borlase.

The interesting one is soligo, who was in the B team but looked to be moving well to my eye and his skill level instantly stood out. Curious to see if he plays in the eagles game - you’d think so, perhaps on limited minutes.

The blue team had 19 players so you’d think pedlar, murphy, soligo (if ready) and keane are the most likely to fill out the 23 come round one. Curtin a maybe if fit. Butts a chance to replace borlase. Ned a possibility. Can’t see too many others in serious contention - maybe burgess? Nank doesn’t seem to be in their round one plans.

If curtin is injured we may end up having no debutants for round one which would be a shame.

Just a few player notes from today:

Thilthorpe - just exuding confidence at the moment. Has a strut going and just looks super sharp. Hit one of the more lovely kicks inside 50 you will see.

Rachele - for such a powerful guy he does tend to clam up a bit when tackled. I would like to see him take the tackler on a bit more - with his build you’d think he’d be capable. But instead he often seems to accept the tackle and just hold it in.

Pedlar - missed two crucial targets in the match sim and in general doesn’t appear to be quite as sharp as this time last year. Has serious talent but needs to take those errors out of his game.

Taylor - won a small handful of clearances playing for the B team which was pleasing to see. I want him to improve his skill execution however. He has serious lateral movement but at the moment seems content with hack kicks out of congestion.

Borlase - took a great pack mark across half back. Will be interesting to see if he makes it in the round one team - he seems to be in the coaches’ favour at the moment. Now that butts is back I am curious to see how we shape up back there.

Welsh - didn’t get a heap of ball but this kid is pure power. Hopefully is over his back issues as he could be quite exciting this year. I think people will be surprised with how nippy this kid actually is.

Thanks Bigman, you're the best! Appreciate all these reports so much!

In the match Sim did it look like we were trying move the ball quickly? When we did hold it up was it across half back or up on the wing? How well did we navigate our own defensive zone?

Interestingly in VB's presser it was mentioned that Curtin missed because of an in-grown toenail of all things..
