Gallucci was a drafting failure, but not a recruitment failure - given that he was selected because the coach overruled the recruitment team.
Do we have any proof this is true or is it a Bigfooty rumour?
I'm still not sure who to blame (if anyone) for failing to pick up on McAsey's mental health problems before draft day.
What would Ogilvie have to do to deserve criticism in your book? Murder somebody?

Great question.

And for those that claim it is true - what were the details.

I think that not taking a ruckman with a first round pick when we were just about to enter our premiership window with a 28 year old ruck who would be an All Australian in 2017 - was the right move. So for the coaches to over ride the recruiters in this instance makes a lot of sense.

Where the knock needs to come is that Hamish had Galluci higher than Berry, SPP, Hawyard,Parfitt and Bolton.

It's been fairly widely reported. Others would be better placed to know who/how it has been confirmed.

The question is this: how much was known about McAsey's mental illness before the draft? If it was completely undiagnosed, and Ogilvie had no way of knowing about it, then all you're doing is conducting a witch hunt. If it was previously diagnosed, and Ogilvie failed to identify it as a problem, then there is genuine cause for criticism about Ogilvie's performance.

Jones was ****ed up by the coaching staff, not the recruiters.

McHenry was a recruiting failure, but to be fair we picked him around the same mark that most phantom drafters had him.

His Dad nearly dying and COVID stuffing his home visits had a fair bit to do with Fischer mindset too.

I can see why we drafted the best performed KPD in the draft that year, but it wasnt the right move.

People need to stop including McHenry in that. He was a pick 16, not pick 6. There are slim pickings with the players taken after him.
Its the Zak Butters thing, had he not gone so well at Port we probably wouldn't hear too much about Ned.

He was predicted to go around that spot, but he just didnt work out.

You can search. It was reported in about 2017/18 following one of Qld Supporter events done by Jenny. Pyke spoke at the event for quite a long time. It's been mentioned a fair few times since.

I remember it pretty well, but there was more detail written at the time.

I think the bigger issue was realizing McAsey didn't have any exposed form on good key forwards. It was hard to know where he was really at.

I'm still of the opinion Galluci could have been a decent player if developed.

Our veteran recruiter Phil Bunn who did a lot of our WA scouting at the time also relayed the message on trade radio several years ago when interviewed.

We wanted higher than that, and no one was stupid enough to give them away.
That blinkered approach was extremely stupid of us

We learned from that and our pick trading since has been very good

Did we ever hear it mentioned until it became obvious to all that English was a better player than Gallucci?

Really did seem like he could do some good things... then ruptured an Achilles and we cut him loose.

Did seem quite sudden.
Turned out he was a real FIGJAM and had issues off field. Last seen kicking the dew off the oval at South Fremantle.

I only heard it when Phil Bunn mentioned it on trade radio, can't recall what year, perhaps 4 years or so ago. It was brought up to Bunn do coaches have input into selections and he said rarely but that Don Pyke did when the recruiting team put English forward as their 1st pick he intervened saying we needed speed big time and that at that point they thought Gallucci best met that attribute

Correct. The two biggest issues with drafting McAsey were that he is incredibly slow and unathletic for a key defender, and also that we massively overvalued our incumbent midfield in doing it.

Sure he isn’t mentally cut out to be an AFL footballer, but taking a slow key defender, while there were guys like Serong and Young available, was really, really bad list management as well as poor talent evaluation.

We just thought Sloane, 2 x Crouch’s and Laid was an A grade midfield. It clearly wasn’t.

I remember at the time no other clubs had the slightest interest in McAsey, yet we were so gung ho on him.
