Bigman’s Training Reports

Will never forget that sequence of games between his last game as a Rookie where he had a great performance against the dogs (18 touches, 2 goals and a speccy). Then all offseason looked like he was gonna be the bursting mid out of stoppages that we were crying for.

Then when the season started he was so over instructed to develop his defensive game that he would line up at centre bounces with his back to the ruckman, and facing his opponent. And ended up with multiple games with single digit disposals as a midfielder. Completely nullifying all his natural game and emphasising all his insecurities.

I think that offseason set him back 3 years.
I couldn't agree more. F***ing Godden murdered him. That last game against the Dogs showed us all what he was capable of as a midfielder. That pr**k really did a job on him.

Bigman's report makes me feel like ROB has got complacent knowing his position in the 22 is 100% safe.
It's never been safer.

He knows we are stuffed if his injured.

I understand both sides of the RUCK debate .....if you're going to develop a Ruck, surely it has to be a Sth Aust lad ..otherwise the Vics or home states will pilfer after we've developed

There are a few lads bubbling away ....Goad is coming along nicely, just his tank is poor currently ....Reidy from FREO ect

What causes dismay is these players are sight unseen or devoid of whispers .....it doesn't mean Reid is sitting on his hands
Only one ruckman named in the 2025 SANFL Academy squad North Adelaide's Taj Murray who is actually from Darwin (Nightcliff FC) so I think he'll again be tied to the Allies for the Nationals. Also a member of the 2025 AFL Academy squad under Tarkyn Lockyer and formerly a member of the 2024 Marsh AFL National Futures squad.

The Gold Coast getting first dibs on NT talent has expired hasn't it?

We could've pretended Stachan was a genuine threat to his position but any doubt was removed when he got a crack at the top job.

Then we didn't draft anyone. When can the new bloke be added? Mid year?

My understanding is the 19th Feb is the final date for SSP but it appears only if we put a player on the inactive list prior...and I don't see that happening?

We can add someone up to 19th or 21st Feb (via the PSSP), or in the MSD. However, we can only do so if we have a list vacancy to fill, which we don't currently have.

At this point, the only way we can create a list vacancy is by placing a player on the Inactive List. This requires the player to have retired from the AFL, or to have suffered a season ending injury. Before you ask, yes, a doctor needs to sign off saying that the injury is season ending.

We currently have a few players on the injury list, but none of them have diagnoses saying that it's season over.

Statistically, it's highly likely that at least one of our players will suffer a season-ending injury between now and the MSD.

Strachan gets 2 games against Nankervis and Grundy!! 2 of the premier ruckmen.
So still doesn't actually get a decent shot of proving himself.

Did you watch his last game against Grundy, Strachan was tonguing it early in the 2nd quarter, it's not so much his ruck craft but his endurance levels will never allow him to be competitive for 4 gruelling quarters of AFL level football. ROB might not be great but he's absolutely competitive for 4 quarters of AFL level football. Both ROB and Strachan turn 30 later this year, neither are the future but moreso Strachan than ROB,

what on earth does this mean?

Very possible. But don't confuse what has actually happened for what they wanted to happen. I vibe they got it wrong where rucks would be taken in the drafts i.e. went earlier or later than expected and also misread how easily they could pinch a ruck from another club.

Regardless they've ballsed it up over multiple trade periods now

Look, that may all be true.

I think the only thing we probably disagree on is - I don't think they feel it's been a big issue.

The fact that our biggest shitfight on this site is about the ruck situation tells me our list has gotten a lot better.

Also haven't we been trying to recruit ready-to-go ruckmen only to end up being used to fatten their next contract at the current club? Grundy but also someone else wasn't there? Im not sure ruck was ever totally ignored but this site would've gone into full meltdown if we had fixed the ruck before the midfield and the keys

Was he carrying an injury that game? I've never noticed him having endurance issues in the SANFL but it seems like it's become an accepted fact.

You don't need a developing ruck. You only need a ruck.

The issue comes if we can't get a ready to go ruck to replace ROB.

The question is why have we kept Strachan on the list for 7 seasons if he's not even a capable backup? Why waste a list spot for that long on someone that couldn't cover for a ROB injury?

If we had swapped him for someone else once or twice in those 7 years maybe we find a ROB replacement by chance or put a bit more pressure on his spot
