You touched on a few issues I was going to bring up with regard to our list swannies

WARNING: Long post and possibly somewhat negative. This is my way of dealing with the crushing loss.

Swans had 37 players play league footy this year.
- 5 played all 21 games; Hams, Robinson, Notte, Geappen and Riggio
- 4 played 20 games; Ugle, Hilderbrandt, Elari and Twomey
- 3 played 19 games; Ames, Davis and Garlett
- 2 played 18 games; Roach and Jetta
- 1 played 17 games; Simpson
So the core of the side was largely free of significant injury. Nobody outside of these players except Blight could be considered a significant part of the side.

Notable league rankings;
Kicks: 11th Hilderbrandt, 17th Twomey, 20th Robinson, 22nd Roach, 25th Riggio
Handballs: 6th Twomey, 10th Riggio, 14th Hams, 15th Robinson, 16th Hilderbrandt, 19th Elari
Disposals: 9th Twomey, 12th Hilderbrandt, 14th Riggio, 16th Robinson, 20th Hams, 24th Roach
Marks: 2nd Geappen, 3rd Notte, 7th Twomey, 11th Hilderbrandt, 18th Garlett
Goals: 4th Geappen, 5th Garlett, 21st Notte, 24th Davis
Hitouts: 7th Lobb, 10th Lammie, 20th Notte

Those that have already left the club are; Lammie, Miles and Daly
Those that are likely to be drafted are; Garlett, Cameron and Lobb
Those that will change WAFL sides are; Bennell, Newman and Neale
Those that are likely to retire are; Embley
Those that have retired are; Roach

That leaves us with a squad looking like;
Defenders
Kyle HAMS
Tallan AMES
Graham JETTA
Justin SIMPSON
Jarrad BLIGHT
Alex HOWARD
Travis CASSERLY
Brent LATCH

Midfielders
Matt RIGGIO
Shaun HILDEBRANDT
Aaron ELARI
Wayde TWOMEY
Adam FAULKNER
Blaine BOEKHORST
Nathan BROAD
Jesse MANTON
Connor BLAKELY
Roderick MANTON

Ruckmen
Nathan BLAKELY

Forwards
Brett ROBINSON
Tony NOTTE
Tim GEAPPEN
Kirk UGLE
Ryan DAVIS
Matthew ROGERS
Ricky CARY

In my opinion, the defence is fine. They are our strength and battle hard with little support. Continued development from within should be sufficient.

The midfield is very slow (other than a few of the kids) and only runs one way. They are constantly caught jogging behind their players as the ball transitions down to the opposition’s forward line. Hilder in particular just looks far too slow and doesn’t offer any defensive pressure or intent.

We now only have one ruckman who played a senior game in 2013 and it’s fair to say he struggled. He is only young and inexperienced so it’s not criticism or blame, just the truth.

The forward line is lacking depth, a tall forward and class. Geappen and Davis have been terrific forwards. Notte has been excellent and is 3rd in the league for marks (behind Bower and Geappen), but he is also the second ruckman and spends time plugging holes so his impact in the forward 50 is limited. Geappen as a sole tall forward has also struggled at times. Robinson gets plenty of the ball, but isn’t kicking enough goals. Ugle is inconsistent and lacks defensive pressure.

List Changes
Hilderbrandt, Robinson and Ugle are all senior players I wouldn’t be devastated to lose and would free up significant payments which would be better invested in greater needs. Roach retiring would release some good coin I'd imagine as well as points.

Development
Latch, Boekhorst, Broad, Jesse Manton and Connor Blakely are all worth pumping some games into.

Recruitment
We need a ruckman and a key forward. I’d be looking at the East Perth pair of Johnson and Smith. They won’t be cheap but their game time may be limited once East Perth gains Sinclair, McInnes, McGovern and Tunbridge.

Obviously quality midfielders are always high on the agenda but I’m not going to speculate on potential interstate recruits.

Krakouer, Ellard, Neville Jetta and Banfield are all ex-Swans boys and chances of being delisted from AFL sides. All would provide worth – particularly Ellard. Jetta and Banfield would provide pace and run through the middle and up forward.
swans for premiers 2014.........gulp

Looks like Tony Notte takes home the 2013 Swan Medal.

2nd - Tim Geappen
3rd - Wayde Twomey
4th - Kyle Hams and Brett Robinson

Really happy for Tony. Been a fan for a long time and it's been great to see him develop into the excellent player he is and receive the recognition.

Congrats to Tony on a great year for the Mighty Black Ducks and also to Swoop, Twomes, Hammer & Robbo on their placings in the Swan Medal. Was surprised Davo & Amesy didnt finish Top 5 but they both missed games with injury during the season which obviously didnt help their chances.

Agreed. I thought Davo in particular was a real chance.

Unrelated, Spearhead = Beasley Hutton?

So at the moment it looks like our changes are

Outs
Jamie Bennell (East Perth), Tom Roach (Retired), Shaun Hilderbrant (Subiaco), Wade Twomey (Subiaco), Brett Robinson (South Bunbury)

(thanks to Mr AFL from OzFooty)

In my outburst below, it looks like the only one I missed was Twomey. So even though the outs look bad, they aren't terribly unexpected.

I stand by my releasing of Hilder and Robbo for the above reasoning. Losing Twomey too will help us further refresh. They're all quality players, they just don't work effectively as a unit.

3 have been delisted but Banfield will be re-rookied. Losing Kraks is a shame but hopefully we can convince Neville Jetta to stay in Perth and play for us.

Corey Gault is one I missed who would be worthwhile. He's a 21yo, 198cm, 94kg ruckman who can also play key position and has spent a couple of years on Collingwood's list. Has played back with success in the VFL and can also swing into the ruck and up forward.

It's quite easy to be pessimistic at this stage but I'll happily support Swans put some real development into their youth which has been somewhat lacking in recent years.

Well said boys & I hear we can add Hams to that list of outs as well.
I am of the opinion we thank all of those boys for their good service over the years (most are Premiership players of our great club) and move on.
We should get the top transfer fee for them which should help with the finances and from here on in have a major focus on our own zone juniors coming through, make sure our own boys coming back from the AFL come back to us, with the odd outside recruit to fill any gaps that appear in the squad.
As the old saying goes sometimes you have to take a step back to move 2 steps forward!

Would be great if we could get Gault back, particularly with Lobb likely to be drafted and Notte a possibility as well. He might be re-rookied by Collingwood though.

Very disappointed to have missed out on Krakouer. His 2010 grand final is still probably the greatest individual performance I've ever witnessed.

Notte? I would've thought that you would have more chance than him:). On another matter, do they have another Coach or are they going to continue with Harding?

Harding, unfortunately, is still contracted. Swan Districts don't have any money so won't pay him out. His 2 year contract extension was a joke.

I don't think Notte will be drafted. He was terrific this year and is possibly our most important player, but I do Notte think he has, nor can achieve, the body for AFL football even though he has the smarts and skills.

Having said that, if a team was after a utility ruckman who could play any KP post, they could do much worse.

That was obvious to anyone with sufficient knowledge when he was first drafted, a clear case of our recruiting people not carrying out due diligence. I agree with your comments re Harding, he would be flat out coaching a pig to get dirty:).

Looks like it's back to the dark ol' days then. Having some surplus cash was fun whilst it was squandered

And wasn't isn't squandered well? :(
Krakouer burns me up, but I'm almost over it. :)

It will be very interesting to see what return West Perth get out of their investment in Krakouer.

Skint Swans bank on transfer boost
The West Australian

Swan Districts are banking on a glut of player transfer fees and plan to use club buildings as a regular entertainment venue to shore up their tenuous financial position.
The cash-strapped club reported a deficit of $102,401 for 2013 ahead of tomorrow's annual general meeting where members are expected to grill the Swans board.
A small trading profit of almost $36,000 was eaten away by the depreciation of assets last season and more than $42,000 paid in interest on a hefty tax bill.
Chief executive Tom Bottrell described last season as a "consolidation year" and predicted a windfall of at least $120,000 from transfer fees would help the club.
Swans will receive an estimated $85,000 after home-grown youngsters Dayle Garlett, Rory Lobb and rookie-listed Charlie Cameron were drafted into the AFL system at the end of last year.
The club has not stood in the way of senior trio Shaun Hildebrandt, Wayde Twomey and Andrew Krakouer leaving for rival teams, which will boost Swans' coffers from the transfer fees.
"We financially put a hold on recruiting heavily and a few of those players chose to leave," Bottrell said. "We just want to really promote our own zone."
Bottrell denied allowing senior players to leave would threaten the club's on-field performances and further hurt membership levels and bar takings.
Membership income remained stable in 2013, but a fall in merchandise sales by almost half compared to the previous season was an added blow.
"Our crowd decreased a little bit last year and that's an unknown," Bottrell said.
"We're just not sure what the alignment model is going to do with crowds this year."
Swans are hoping to profit from a deal that will involve the upstairs bar at Steel Blue Oval being used as a live venue throughout the year.
The recovery efforts come after a crippling 2011 season when Swans recorded a loss of $806,000, finished second last on the ladder and were later fined $25,000 by the WA Football Commission for salary cap declaration breaches.
The club is still $1.75 million in debt despite paying close to $190,000 off that figure last year.

Anyone going to AGM?

That's what I was hinting at. I think he is going to be an assistant coach at SD so only be available for 13 games in the SWFL.

It will be very interesting to see what return West Perth get out of their investment in Krakouer.
Wow, they were prophetic words Ted38. :)

Went to the scratchie last night and whilst I didn't recognise a lot of Swans players I recognised no Perth players.
We moved the ball well and had reasonably good skills for this time of the year.
Faulkner is an interesting character, moves awkwardly but manages to evade opposition most of the time and finds a lot of it. Have liked him since I saw him at colts and it looks like he is in good fettle early. Most pleasing was probably Casserley, Blight and Pratt returning. Connor Blakely looked like he might improve on last year. Rogers was good. Rudi Riddoch was good. Howard and Elari were also good.
Latch looked the most vulnerable of our defenders in the first half but improved a lot in the second. There were 4 Jetta's , Aaron looked pretty good.
Clem Smith (Perth) looks dynamite.

Andrew will be playing at West Perth this season.
