Personally I would just play an extra defender as a loose man, I would think Mcveigh or Dempsey or even play both Carlisle and Hooker with Hooker being a loose man.
Fletcher is great at being a third man up which is great when you are playing against some monster forwards but we really arent against carlton.

What worries me about Carlton is the space that Betts and Garlett have running back towards goal. My solution would be to bring numbers back into defence. Robinson tagging fletcher therefore turns into a win as it is getting extra numbers into defence.

There is nothing Hibberd or Dempsey could do against Betts and Garlett if we give them space. So why not clog up the defence. Let them tag fletcher and bring someone else down to play the loose man role therefore limiting the space that their smalls have to move

In terms of 'attractive football' (and other equally wanky catchphrases), flooding the backline might not deliver the goods, but in terms of being a potential problem for Carlton, it may not necessarily be the worst idea.

The last two times we've played them, they've killed us, absolutely murderously destroyed us, with goals out the back. We gave them too much space out the back and paid the price. Obviously it's not that simplistic- Carlton were only able to open us up so repeatedly because they beat us in the midfield too- but if we turn the game into a war of attrition it might well be a good thing for us. Especially if Dempsey can play- in such a game, his ability to set up attacks from defence would be especially crucial, whether dirtbag Robinson is on Fletcher or not.

Maybe similar to an old Premier League tactic. Flood back but leave a line of KPPs forward of the ball. If Carlton try to flood forward we can kick long to Ryder 60 from goal who can either dish off to a running player, bring the ball to ground and arriving players can force a stoppage or he can kick long to Hurley who would be 50-60 out from goal.

Despite Carlton having an over all better midfield I feel Watson, Hocking, Lonergan and Howlett will get their hands on the ball more than their mids.

seriously, sending him forward would be awesome. it wouldnt even have to be for the first minute or two just to break the tag.
carlton arent exactly exploding with talls so it all depends on the faith in carlisle and pears and co.
just imagine what would happen if he took a pack mark and kicked the first goal. ratten's head would explode.
