BLONDIE - Love them or Loathe them?

I was only a young fella but she was the first woman i looked at and thought " i have no idea why? But she makes me feel funny"
A few yrs later i realised it was lust :D In her day she was talented and hot.

I've seen both Blondie and Devo a few times, but missed both their most recent tours. Family and illness.

Shame.

Saw Devo at Day on the Green and must say they were outstanding, albeit 50 minutes late due to a non urgent medical issue.....ie one of them was pissed. Not nearly as "tinny" as I was expecting. In fact they really rocked.

I am compiling a top 30 or so with Youtube videos. Probably don't have an extensive enough catalogue to make a quality top 50 but good to see there might be an audience for them.

I think a top 50 would be quite easy, they are one of the few bands where I believe their singles aren't always better than their non-singles. Anyway here is a top 50 from someone who has heard every Blondie song at least a couple of thousand times over the last 30-35 years.

1. The Attack Of The Giant Ants (Blondie)
2. Atomic (Eat To The Beat)
3. Fade Away & Radiate (Parallel Lines)
4. Angels On The Balcony (Autoamerican)
5. Hanging On The Telephone (Parallel Lines)
6. Youth Nabbed By Sniper (Plastic Letters)
7. Heart Of Glass (Parallel Lines)
8. Look Good In Blue (Blondie)
9. Orchid Club (The Hunter)
10. Fan Mail (Plastic Letters)
11. War Child (The Hunter)
12. Live It Up (Autoamerican)
13. Sunday Girl (Parallel Lines)
14. Kung Fu Girls (Blondie)
15. For Your Eyes Only (The Hunter)
16. The Hardest Part (Eat To The Beat)
17. Victor (Eat To The Beat)
18. Contact In Red Square (Plastic Letters)
19. Do The Dark (Autoamerican)
20. Detroit 442 (Plastic Letters)
21. Slow Motion (Eat To The Beat)
22. Living In The Real World (Eat To The Beat)
23. 11:59 (Parallel Lines)
24. A Shark In Jets Clothing (Blondie)
25. Eat To The Beat (Eat To The Beat)
26. Bermuda Triangle Blues (Flight 45) (Plastic Letters)
27. No Imagination (Plastic Letters)
28. Rapture (Autoamerican)
29. Rip Her To Shreds (Blondie)
30. Dreaming (Eat To The Beat)
31. Kidnapper (Plastic Letters)
32. Man Overboard (Blondie)
33. Cautious Lip (Plastic Letters)
34. Little Girl Lies (Blondie)
35. One Way Or Another (Parallel Lines)
36. Accidents Never Happen (Eat To The Beat)
37. Will Anything Happen? (Parallel Lines)
38. Rifle Range (Blondie)
39. Call Me (The Best Of BLONDIE)
40. Die Young Stay Pretty (Eat To The Beat)
41. Here's Looking At You (Autoamerican)
42. X Offender (Blondie)
43. The Tide Is High (Autoamerican)
44. Love At The Pier (Plastic Letters)
45. In The Flesh (Blondie)
46. Walk Like Me (Autoamerican)
47. Good Boys (The Curse Of Blondie)
48. I Didn't Have The Nerve To Say No (Plastic Letters)
49. Go Through It (Autoamerican)
50. Europa [Instrumental] (Autoamerican)

I couldn't find space for one of their Number 1 hits, Maria.

Naturally they have more than 50 songs, and a genuine fan would like 50 songs (as I also do). I'm more thinking of a list of must-listen-to songs to appeal to others that might not be so into the band.

I love everything from the first four albums for example. I do recognise that Autoamerican was not quite as good however and Hunter was definitely a niche album (I'm a bit of a fan of the off the wall 'Dragonfly' though. I think 'For Your Eyes Only' would have been a better choice for the Bond movie, but it is definitively Bond soundtrack material and less Blondie roots if you know what I mean.

Having said that, when coming up with a list, I hit 30 without a problem and there are songs I don't want to leave off.

I too can't find room for Maria. Definitely mired in their first stint pre-breakup although I haven't listened to their more recent stuff enough.

No Union City Blue?? Sacrilege!!! :p. Can't argue with that list too much though. Love that you've got 'heres looking at you' in there. Its an absolute gem of a song. Nice to see some tracks off 'The Hunter' on the list too. It's the one album of Blondie's that I found really hard to get into at first, but there's a couple of really great songs on there to be found.

Too hard to argue which songs i'd replace in that list, all killer songs, but personally i'd have to find room for

- Union city blue
- Im on E
- Diamond bridge
- Maria
- Screaming skin

Sounds reasonable, but still, I couldn't limit myself to just 30, I'd go nuts trying to whittle it down. There would be another 30 songs that I love that left off my top 50, they were such a consistant band, their first three albums in particular are masterpieces IMO opinion without a weak track on them, and their second three (including The Hunter) aren't too far behind.

I agree about For Your Eyes Only, I love that song, it's classic Bond material and Debbie sounds so much better than Sheena Easton. More attractive as well.

"Call Me" was a collaboration by Debbie and Georgio Moroder

"American Gigolo" depicts the decadent early 80s era better than anything

The vinyl "Greatest Hits" contained a great Debbie pinup where she was wearing an Andy Warhol t-shirt but I can't find it - tragedy

Can anyone find & post the pic here?

The Andy Warhol photos are great, but this is my favourite.

Love that photo! God she's so tiny! She just exudes such attitude though. Have a copy hanging on my wall signed by Deborah and Chris Stein that i bought when Blondie last tour a couple years ago.

Also picked up a copy of this,

Deborah and Devo, taken by Chris in 77. Would have loved to have seen them when they toured together this year. Shame they didnt bring the tour to Australia

DH never did it for me on the lust front, but they are a great band nonetheless. First 2 albums particularly brilliant. Just full of good power pop, edgy songs. Catchy melodies, great hooks.
