If Gaff’s get out clause means he can can somehow revisit Free Agency, then Wow....

IMO it really depends on the state of play when he signed.
If he was really just haggling for money at the time with little real intention of leaving for interstate clubs then any get out clause would be loaded in favor of the WCE's- " ok we will give you the $'s and your get out clause- but if you decide to leave we expect compensation of picks"

But if he was half out the door and they only just managed to sign him again, then the situation is different. He was a FA when he signed so he should be a FA when he triggers the clause. Gaff may have played on believing that they would probably win another flag- the one he missed , and it was worth a roll of the dice for one year. now that they have missed out and some key players are slowing down eg Kennedy, he might feel that the window has shut again.

Dropping Plowman? Our most versatile defender and 3rd in B&F. I love Marchy but Plow is one of our most important and consistent players.
Yeah I guess. I still think Marchy is a must have as he is not only a quality player but is also expected to have a very good season next year.

I'm tumescent.

Right now, I would have Gibbons in that side over Dow

So. That was the day that was. The first day of Trade Period they said. We won, they said.

Gaff is the gamechanger. He puts Carlton into finals. He is exactly what we need to compliment cripps. Add Papley and cross our fingers for Martin, betts and no injuries and we can finish in the 8

I suspect the issue is less one of the law of contract and more one of the AFL/AFLPA wanting to remove contractual clauses that can unilaterally end contracts early. Not to mention the knock on effects in terms of salary cap, free agency etc.

Agree it's more about the CBA. No player is going to agree to a clause where the club can terminate early, this sort of unilateral clause would only be to the benefit of a player who has a lot of relative market power at that time (eg Gaff, Kelly). Clubs wouldn't want to agree to it generally speaking.

Love it, debating best 22 will continue to polarize, even more when we are a contender

It's always hard picking a best 22.

But sometimes you're debating which 4/10 player should play before the other. We're on predicted path of soon debating which 7/10 player should play before the other.

Kerridge or Graham or O'Shea????...hmmm

Cuningham or Silvagni or Marchbank or Stocker???...hmmm

I know it is getting hard to fit everyone in, but you just cant leave a player like Marchbank out. I doubt Simmo will play every game next year, and there is no guarantees that Docherty will be up to his 2017 standard, so based on form I think it will be one of those. Of course if they both play well and injury free I think we will have to look at dropping Plowman.

I'd think that with Docherty returning it will be Newman who is more likely to be relegated to the fringes of the team before Plowman would be.

If you want to add Marchbank to that team unfortunately for Levi he probably would be the one to miss out. Mind you it's very rare that we have all our key position players available at the same time so I still see Levi as being important to us, he will still play more often than not.

It's been a long time since we've had a problem with settling on a best 22, a very good sign for the future.

So Agresta said we don't really need support for Cripps.
I think it was Jeremias who wisely said that as every year goes by, the less we need to find this support for Cripps.
We have to put it on the players we now have to step-up tio support - Setterfield, Kennedy, Dow, SPS etc.

As someone put forward to me today in regards to Gaff; If indeed West Coast are happy to move him on in order to get Kelly, why not just deal with Geelong?

While i agree with the notion that every year that goes by, our young mids should be able to contribute more and therefore lessoning our need for that mature gun...i'm also pretty sure it would be very beneficial to have one, and that Agresta is playing the game in not wanting to look desperate.

this place when the itk’s start to get involved...

things normally don’t happen for another 24-36 hours, but the no gaff movement from some is really interesting stuff to read lol

One thing is certain, if Gaff FA rumours are true we’ll know pretty soon as the window closes this week!!

It would basically usher in the NFL situation where there is a hypothetical contract, but then only a small part of it which is actually guaranteed for the player. Clubs would love it - imagine if the swans could just cut and run on the Buddy contract when it suits them?

Also, anyone could come out of nowhere next season, for example James Worpel this year. Stocker could go straight to the center circle and average 25 disposals.
